Completely gotta agree on the effects of adding tank mates. I've got 9 ember tetras in a 10G, so I wanted to add some tank mates. Added Endlers Livebearers (Go figure), and the tetras became way more curious and active, which wasn't even what I was trying to acheive. Gotta love positive unintended side effects

Surprisingly I've been finding ember tetras at Petco in Sioux City. Beforehand I've had to order them online, my hope is more people will keep them as they become available locally. I love them, I have 11 in a 10 with peacock gudgeons

    • @pecktec

@@pecktec mine are out in the center usually as I had a fake waterfall fountain thing for reptiles that the pump died in. After my bearded dragon passed I dug it out of the dirt in his enclosure and replaced the pump, filled the inside chamber with lava rock and a pad of filter foam in the back wedged inside where the door slots in (left door off in this case). Scaped the 10 to hold the fountain on the far right with a HOB with foam over the inlet. The left side is dirt and gravel mix swept up to about a peak of halfway up. Capped that with about an inch of sand and then light gravel and round 'carribean sea stones' from Lowes (white round flat stones). Growing moss, hygro, grass like plants in-between rocks and on rock ledges. I've found the edge of cover on the right side where the tank gets lowest in substrate height (to accommodate the fountain thing and look more natural) is kind of the boundary where they sort of hang out and wait. If they see me they're right to the front ready to feed which brings out the gudgeons so they're always out when they see people. They're the only tank in my bedroom at the moment so they've rather quickly developed a routine of begging lol. Not necessarily as 'exciting' as my African cichlids, but I find their personality to be just as enjoyable.

I soak my nano pellets before offering, and they eat it. They like the pellet soft so it’s easy for them to swallow.
My only regret with these guys is not getting a bigger tank, I would have a massive tank with carpet plants so their scattered eggs hatch and the babies grow. A 50 gallon with 50+ tetras would be awesome, maybe even a 100 LOL.
In a heavily planted 50 gallon, I will compliment the fish with a school of brown pencil fish or clown killifish(top), pygmy cories(bottom), kuhli loaches(bottom), and a honey gourami.

I love my ember tetras and I have 8 of them with 5 fancy guppies in a 15 gal fluval flex. So food: my guppies eat at the surface and the embers eat mid-level. The problem is my guppies eat so much more of the food because the flakes stay at the surface until the filter pushes them around the tank. Is there a good quality slow sinking flake food out in the market I can use? I've been searching but hard to find any particular QUALITY brand. Thanks for a great video,

I've been a fan of your channel for years now and the tank mates bit, makes sense. I would love to add a few endler's to round it off. Thanks, Sean!

Have you ever considered a timer for your heater? In nature there are ebbs and flow in the temperature and I think the animals would appreciate it not always being exactly the same temperature. I live in Southern California and I don’t really need a heater for 10 months out of the year but I think I will use a timer and only heat during the day when the lights are on.. again it doesn’t get colder than 60 at night really.. anyways. Thanks for the all the wonderful info and sweet production.. although I do feel like I’m back in the 80s.. yay!

I just stocked my Fluval Flex 9 with five ember tetras, two amano shrimp, and a nerite snail to go with the male betta that has already been in there for a while. They were not shy from minute one. The betta was curious about them and kinda chased them for about thirty seconds and then has completely ignored them ever since. They truly are a joy to watch--so freakin tiny! These were not in the hobby when I last dove in about two decades ago. I love them! I purchased bug bites small bites and the small hikari pellet but those both seem too big for the embers so I'm going to go back and pick up a flake food. (The betta and amanos LOVE the new food though--never saw the betta pick through the substrate for fallen food before!) Love your videos, Peck!

I'm going to keep some with a betta in a planted 14 gal (55ltr uk litres) tank i know they could nip but pretty much everyone tells me they highly wont and they pretty much are happy at the 80/82f that is the recommended for betta and are much better than neons which do nip 🙂
I am using a black sand substrate as my tank is black at the back at the back along with my heater and powered 3 stage filter (with flow adjustment)
I use almond leaves and filtered water as they make the water soft and keep pH around 7.2 to 7.4pH i read these are really hardy little guys

I started with 9 ember tetras in with my two guppies. One of the ember's got itself lodged in the filter intake (the gaps where very small, I think he jammed himself in there and then couldn't escape) And he didn't make it. I fixed the filter intake problem, so I shouldn't lose anymore. But now I only have 8 embers with my two guppies. Do I need to get more ember tetras to make them feel more secure?

Fish Keeper It took like 2 days, to get them full coloured. You need soft water with low pH and medium lighting. Dont forget the number of your ember tetras, if you just have a little of those, they could fell uncomfartable. I‘ve a group of 15 in my 10 gallon tank and lots of hiding places.

Today I bought a new tank, the fluval edge 6 gallon.. It's awesome!! I have an idea of just putting some shrimp in it and let them have it all to themselves :)
I haven't put anything in it until I know which shrimp is good for beginners. So my question is: which kind of shrimp(s) are best for beginners?
I would like them to breed just a little, not overcrowd the place, if that's even possible! :P

I was thinking about getting 5-6 of these for a planted 5 gallon tall aquarium. Could I pair these with amano shrimp for cleanup? I understand shrimp don't provide much of a bioload, could 2-3 work?

Trim Q&A: What types of tools are best for trimming vs planting? I'm new and starting small with a Fluval Edge, which I love. I haven't planted the tank yet. Substrate: Sachem Fluorite Black Sand 3.5 kg. 6 Fancy Tailed Guppies and a cool piece of Malaysian driftwood.
What videos would you recommend from your channel for someone just beginning to plant?
If I go to a local stream and pull interesting rocks or driftwood, do I need to take precautions before putting into my tank?
Love your videos, thanks for your helpful content.

hey, if you have a moment, I've recently setup a 15 gallon planted tank, it's a standard older rectangle style tank. at the moment I have 8 ember tetras, 6 black neon tetras, and some cherry red shrimp. how many more ember tetras would you think I might be able to put in my tank without over-loading it? I was hoping for 12-ish, and *maybe* a couple panda cory's eventually?

    Hey There!
To begin with, I really appreciate all the great information you provided in these videos. Good to be able to geek-out from time to time with these videos!
You had some really great points as far as how to care for the Ember Tetras, and I believe you also did another video about Nano(tank) fish that included just about all of my (favorite) stocking fish: Chili Raspbora, Clown Killifish, Peacock Gudgeon, and Threadfin Rainbowfish. These are all excellent tankmates for a nano/planted tank. The question I had was regarding filtration and flow.
I have a 12 Gal Bookshelf (Mr Aqua) that runs about 36" W X 9" D, so a traditional HOB filter would just push the water flow into the front glass. I currently have a Cascade 300 at one end with mechanical (included sponge) and biological (bio-media) in each compartment, and a Bacto-Sponge at the far side to help with the bio load. Problem is, either I have WAY too much flow and my plants all get uprooted and turbulence like crazy, or I turn the flow rate down and then I get dead spots. Additionally, I was thinking of adding another Cascade 170 Midway through the tank, but that would send all my "nano" fish racing for their wake-boards!🤣
Any suggestions on what I could use to keep the flow at non-tidal-wave speeds???
    Thanks a bunch!

It would be cool if you could mount it on the side depending on how your light is mounted. I love the corner filter I used on my into the woods tank. Super simple very quite.

Thanks for the quick reply! Funny that you mentioned your "INTO THE WOODS" tank, as I kinda-sorta-but-not-really used that corner filter idea to finally justify taking my under gravel filter out of my 20G wide tank! Waiting for my order from Swiss Tropicals to come any day!
As for this 12Gal bookshelf tank, I just don't see that particular set up working as the depth and height of this tank are very limiting, also, I have a LED light bar that prohibits a H.O.B. filter...
As an aside, in your INTO THE WOODS UPDATE, you made reference to something that helped to "keep track of the CO2 in your tank." Something about, "it was free, so I'm good." Would you be able to provide a description/link to that item? I am setting up CO2 for my first time and have limited knowledge as to how many bubbles/min to set it up at. I am using a Fluval CO2, 45g kit, as that's about where my budget and local fish store will allow...
      Thanks again!

Randall Flores all you need is a bubble counter of some sort. The diffuser on that tank has one built in.

Awesome, entertaining vid as always. I Don't really have a question...only thing I can think of is... have you decided what you are going to do with the 30 gallon (budget rescape out of stuff from old tanks would be cool) and are you still doing rescape on the Edge 12g?

    • @pecktec
      @pecktec  8 лет назад

Im still not sure about the 30. I may just replace it with a new tank when I can. I will deftly escape the 12 edge soon.
