*The power cable I use with the brick is not needed. The one thats reccomended looks like a raspbery pi power supply. Doesnt have to have a brick, so no thats not replacing the internals. You need a 12volt 5amp center positive 2.5mm x 5mm barrel jack cable... Thats it.

They have said that if you don't use a liteon brick or similiar it will not have clean power. Check on Dreamcast junkyard on Facebook.
If you remove the power supply when the Sega Dreamcast is hot it could shock you
If it really needs 60W (12V x 5A) you're probably gonna have a brick. If you only need something like 36W (12V x 3A) you could get away with a wall wort. Either way you are replacing the internal 120V to 12V power supply with an external one...
Do you mean 2.5mm x 5.5mm barrel jack?
What kind of motherboard do you have? Is it VA0 model?

Love it. I havent done the HDMI update on mine. I have 4 Dreamcasts, 1 Japan import for originals back in the day, one still with a disk drive and 1 GDEMU. I have two cards, one with Gun games and another with the rest, I run them through a CRT so thats why I havent done the mod but the DreamPSU is something I intend on doing for my GDEMU console. Nice video.

Your dreamcast is basically Theseus's ship. So many pieces have been replaced that it's not even the same dreamcast anymore
I wanted to do the same but I love my dreamcast and don't want to mess with it. I love it just the way it is.

Because of some... poor judgement in my childhood years, I'm only left with a working Dreamcast motherboard. With these aftermarket parts, rebuilding my DC seems like a real possibility.

The original power supply is better, all you need to do replace the capacitors on the original supply. The only benefit to the PSU mod if making the seller money.
Yeah I was confused why anyone would want to replace a working OEM internal power supply with an external wallwart PSU. Just get the caps replaced - plenty of places that will do this for you online if you're not comfortable with mains voltage.
Yeah, I just saw a tweet from Dragons Hoard Gaming, pretty much saying the DreamPSU is garbage.

Nice looking mod. Don't think I want to put that much into a $10 dreamcast though unless the power supply actually goes out. Did see some on e-bay for around $40 that included a power adapter as well.

With today's tech, it's about time that the power supplies from retro consoles get upgraded. I'm sure that with some tinkering, my Atari 2600 can probably be powered by a C size battery.

Personally I like to avoid power bricks when possible, so with the space left over by the dreamPSU, you can also install a small switching power supply with a 3A rating.

Wait. So you took the power board out the Dreamcast, and added an external powered brick. And this is to keep the console cool. Maybe that's why the Xbox has an external power brick.
I think that may be part of it for the Xbox. BUT I really should have been clear. This power brick I was using is not needed, you can use a power supply that does not have a brick attached to it.... its just I couldn't get the reccomended one. The ones that they reccomend almost look like a Raspberry Pi power supply but with a barrel connector instead.

i find it bizarre that people take an internal psu and turn it into an external one, so you replace the bulky internal psu with a small internal one, but you still need the big external power adapter/ converter which in turn makes all the things you need to run that console bigger, but we all have our own preferences and reasons for doing things

just remove the voltage regulator for the optic drive in the psu and it will not overheat
Hmm. Pretty sure I saw some of the big retro modders saying that the DreamPSU is actually a bad idea. Forget the specifics, but something about it making the system worse overall.
With the slowdown on the game around 11:48 which shouldn't happen you may be right. Unless that's a gedmu thing (I'm researching before doing anything)
Think I'll skip this mod and go for the recapping instead, just need to find a local shop to do it as I'm hopeless at soldering

Yea.I bought a bear bone board with a 3.0 gherz doul core ,three perfect 3 match ultra ram lagncy in single channle xp 32 with null dc and there's no slow downs at all.the null runs,ultra fast and smooth like the real system, with matches 60 hertz game on a 60 hertz crt .

I know this was 4 years ago but isn’t the fan installed backwards? I thought the sticker on the fan was supposed to be on the inside of the console and not showing on the outside. I could be wrong

I have an original DC, but I don't want to mod it (nothing against modding), rather have a mini to add to my collection of mini consoles..

that little thing isn't replacing all that, it's replacing that external power brick. The mod just accepts that and feeds it to the rest of the Dreamcast
Voultar has came out saying to be careful using DreamPSU. Especially hot swapping controllers and such.

Why would anyone want this exactly? I have never been a fan of external power bricks. They are annoying and make cable management a pain in the ass. Are dreamcast power supplies hard to find or something?

The recommended power supply doesnt have a brick. I only bought this one because could get the other. 12v 3-5amp depending on need center positive 5mx2.5 mm jack is all thats required.

Ryan Stroud version difference doesn’t matter I personally have a 5.15, the reason most have faults with their GDEMU is they set it up incorrectly or add dodgy ISOs. If you want help with this I’d highly recommend joining the Seganet discord

Not all replacement PSUs are high quality. The stock PSU is the best option. Recap it and enjoy life with no problems.

I have the DreamPSU too but a power supply of 2a instead of 5a like yours, do you think that can cause problems with slowdown of games on my gdemu or not? I noticed some games on my sd card library run slow and latent.
2a is too low, iirc the minimum recommended is 3a
@@VictorKorp1999 Thank you, I need to look into getting a 3a then or even a 5a, maybe that will help some iso’s run smoother. Also that explains why when I connect it to certain surge protectors the signal disconnects with that power adapter but when connected to wall it doesn’t.

The Retro-Bit controllers are taking ages. They are trying to get them right since they are officially licensed. Now with the world on lock down it was inevitable that this would slow down development.

My boi has the Retro Fighters Dreamcast controller that doesn't come out for another 6 weeks.
What I can’t figure out is if it is supposed to be on it or over in the side to? Or does it be for on it whenever on for many? When you time over if? I’m just behind for you and solver child kind tires.
Its better that you don't have speaker actions because it really drives home how quiet that is. Really hope to mod my DC with GDEmu and DreamPSU as soon as you stop recommending other cool stuff for me to buy.
If I did this, I would probably want to make a custom case since you have so much space left over. I wish they made more gdemus
I wish there was a way I could keep my original disc drive and have sd slot, I don't want to not be able to run my physical games :/ moot point atm, just got a dreamcast yesterday and it just keeps restarting after a moment

I got a dreampsu today, installed it, worked for about ten minutes, then stopped working, system shutdown. I tested the power adapter with a multieter, its dead. hopefully what ever happened in the apater didnt reach the dream psu. I used the same multimeter on three other adapters, they all register good. the adpapter that came with the dream psu registers nothing. Reginal adapter? looks like crap to me. I did reinstall the dreamcast psu, works just fine no problem. so the system is fine.

Ev'ixyn I prefer physical media as well, but these GDRom drives are a dying breed. Personally, I’ve kept my launch DC stock and have all my games but I did buy a used DC to mod.

Why has no one created some new shells for DC. I’m sure they’d sell like crazy. I remember seeing some but apparently no longer available. Surely someone could create new shells. I really want a clear shell.
