The single-speaker audio is due to an undetected recording problem that occurred when I converted this from VHS to disc. I didn't catch the problem until a while later, and I no longer have the original tape.
Goodness does Roeper capture the look of 2002 with absolute perfection.
LOL, true
you should see him now, very sad.
Same with Hugh Grant
Yep, and that’s not a good thing. 😂
@@SladeBlingyeah fell off a cliff unfortunately
Love how they added Signs. It’s really a great movie. I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I was captivated.
It was great. I remember seeing it in a packed theater, it was a fun experience
Signs is a masterpiece it's Mnights best work I'm sorry Sixth Sense is ok after twist not rewatchable BUT Signs omg I'll watch it now
@@jstewlly4747 Nah I'm going to Unbreakable is his best. Signs though yeah that was the last good one until Split
Ebert is the only guy to give Minority Report the respect it deserves.
It’s seriously one of the best films of all time.

i could not disagree more, did not enjoy minority report at all

This was the only year of his entire career where Roger did not have any of the Best Picture nominees on his Top 10 list. Nor did he give any of them 4 stars.
@@dynamicvoltage9765
Best Picture Nominees (Ebert's Review Stars):
- Chicago (3.5)
- Gangs of New York (3.5)
- The Hours (3.5)
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (3)
- The Pianist (3.5)
@@jfranki8198And mind you in an interview that is fortunately posted on RUclips, Ebert said that he had given 20 four star reviews in 2002.
So while he may have enjoyed the nominees, there are 20 films he reviewed higher than each of them
Awww I just love how excited they are about movies. I miss Ebert.
Can't believe these films are 20 years old. Time flies when you're having fun.
It's crazy how far removed from the 2000s we are now.
The sad thing is, it flies even when you're not.
@@BishopWalters12Even 2008 feels like a different world
Though Ebert left out Gangs of New York..
He had the best top ten.
How do you leave out City of God?
Masterpiece.
100% true, I like and know more of Eberts list. I think gangs of new york could've taken a spot on his list tbh
I didn’t like city of god, I found it preachy and overly long
@@BL-mf3jp that's cool man. I can see that.
GoNY is actually a poorly cast, poorly edited film. It’s one of Scorsese’s worst films.
@@BL-mf3jp Ha ha ha. I agree with you. I’m laughing because you were willing to say it. I like a negative review of the film that said something along the lines of when the violence is made to look so cool why bother doing anything about it? It’s simply an ugly, mean spirited, overly stylized and superficial film. I don’t just dislike it. I hate it!!

Talk to Her was really great - and messed up
Thats probably my top ten except for Spirited Away which i havent seen
Fucking good list
I am not a fan of films like LOR but outside of that you have a great list- I did not realize Talk To Her and City of G-d were the same year .
Glad He Ate Her
And
Gang Bang of New York
Are my personal favorites
2002 was a good year for movies.
Agreed!
Yes agreed. Way better than I thought
Post 9/11 energy
I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien for the first time last year knowing little about it. What really surprised me was that hidden subplot about the state of things in Mexico. The movie requires some patience, but it’s outstanding.
Adaptation is one of my favorite movies of all time. The video says it best: if you didn’t like the ending, you weren’t paying attention. It’s a genius script.
Thanks for uploading
My list, based on North American release dates:
1. The Son's Room
2. Adaptation
3. Y Tu Mama Tambien
4. 25th Hour
5. Nowhere in Africa
6. All Or Nothing
7. Russian Ark
8. Spirited Away
9. Minority Report
10. The Pianist
Good list, 25th Hour did nothing for me but I haven't seen it since 2002.
I would add City of God and Soderbergh's Solaris. Take off 25th Hour and All or Nothing, otherwise my list would be very similar.
Good list! Minority Report and The Pianist are two of the best films of all time.
What are your thoughts on Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron?
@@joshmontemayor1212 Never saw it! I know Roger liked it though, can't remember if it got Two Thumbs Up.
@@flaccidusminimus2170, it's worth checking out. It's 1 of those movies that's so good that even the Nostalgia Critic likes it.
One hour photo is really smart and creepy, great thriller.
Spirited away deserves consideration for the title of best film ever.
Seen all of these. Ebert hit the nail on the head. Minority Report is easily my number 1 of the year, it's smart and original.
Can't believe neither had Catch Me if You Can, that's one you can watch over and over.
Love when he not only pays for Jennifer Garner with a fake check, but she pays him in cash the difference to spend the night with her.
@@rollotomassi4768 That's such a nice little detail in a truly great and endlessly enjoyable film! If you haven't already, I recommend the book written by the real Frank Abagnale.
By the way, I love your user name, or is it really Dudley Smith? (Ha-ha!)
That’s a good one, for sure.
The movie is very good, but that the guy the movie's based on is has (unsurprisingly)never stopped lying about himself(and making money from it) makes it harder for me to re-watch. I wasn't surprised though, just watching the movie the story sounded like bs - which is why I looked up info on him at the time.
Journalists easily found out multiple lies in his story way back in 1978:
whyy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/frank2.jpg
But people ignored it because they *wanted* to believe his story, and interviews made for good tv.
He didn't do anywhere near as much(and didn't get anywhere remotely near as much money) as he claims - he was even in prison when he claimed to be doing things. The $2.5m he supposedly conned out of Pan Am, was more likely...$0. Likewise the money he supposedly got from all the banks was physically impossible.
In reality he was likely little more than a petty criminal, and general a**hole, but has talked up a myth.
He was immensely creepy with women, using fake recruiting of air hostesses as an excuse to do physical examinations of female students(after a short time there were multiple complaints), and even(bizarre as it sounds) manipulated his way into staying in the childhood bedroom of a woman he was stalking(from memory he also stole from her parents when he left), and so on.
Likewise he didn't only steal from big faceless companies as he claims, he also stole from ordinary people & those close to him.
The truth has become more widespread since a book about him was released a few years ago, though no doubt many people will still choose to dismiss often indisputable evidence.
My top 10 of 2002:
1. The Pianist
2. Gangs of New York
3. Minority Report
4. Adaptation
5. Insomnia
6. About Schmidt
7. Chicago
8. Lilo & Stitch
9. Red Dragon
10. Punch Drunk Love
That's a good list.
It has hard to imagine Nicholas Hoult was a child actor
While watching this I kept on noticing how few of these movies I saw. It took me a while to remember that I divorced my wife in 2002 and hardly went to the movies that year due to low morale. Although I do remember seeing “We Were Soldiers”. I need to check these movies out!
Love that Minority Report and Adaptation was on both of their lists, and Richard giving Gangs of New York number 1 is wonderful as well.
I love Gangs of New York.
People go on about how Richard wasn't as good as Gene ... my response is two tings ...
1) WHO could EVER be as good as Gene Siskel?
2) He and Roger still had a fun dynamic, that was different, and while you can never replace a Gene Siskel, I still felt the passion of the movies was ever present and enjoyable courtesy of these two.
My top 10 of 2002

1. City of God and Y tu mamá también aren’t here because I haven’t seen them yet though I really want to.
2. Spirited Away isn’t here because it’s on my best of 2001 list.
3 After two years Catch Me If You Can got knocked off my list as I feel The Salton Sea is better
You wil be blow away by both of them. I really like Gangs and some of the others on your list but both those films are actually better
@@robertriteman3227 out of my list I’m curious of the ones you haven’t seen. Also if you’ve seen White Oleander, I’m very intrigued to know what your thoughts are on that. No one talks about it. I personally believe it’s a heavily underrated gem
I acually have seen all of the films on your list. As I said in my own post I hated Adaptation and indeed I find virtually all Charlie Kaufman pretentious . I really liked that you had selected Insomina ( the original Norweigan film was even better) . Here is what I recall about WO . First film I saw of Alison Lohman. It had three women I am still willing to marry and it left me very uncomfortable in the good way. I am going to have to watch it again . I also recall that within a year or so Lohman was also in a film with Sam Rockwell that had a grifter thing going on ( Matchstick Men) . I am going to have to look to see where I can stream WO so I can look at it again. Speaking of Insomnia I would also be willing to marry Hillary Swank and Maura Tierney Both Insomnia and WO had great male supporting actors ( Nick Katt, Martin Donovan, Cole Hauser , Patrick Fugit ) . Catch Me If You Can is so underated which likely is because SS has had several films that were even better ( amazing ) and I would rate it as one of the three best Tom Hank's performances. Funny enough Road To Perdition may not make my Top 3 Hanks roles as for me Newman , Daniel Craig, and Jude Law really impressed ( and yet again another woman I would marry......Jennifer Jason Leigh). No wonder my marriage did not work out. @@AnimationNation2004

The first ten minutes of Minority Report is the Philip k Dick short story. They built the rest. But it is pretty brilliant.
Spirited Away is awesome.
I've seen most of these movies, but my favorites go by decades. The best movies of 2001-2010 are Pan's Labrynth and Dirty Pretty Things. Just my opinion.
DPT is pretty great!
Harry Potter and The Chamber's Secrets was my number 1 best flim of the year 2002
It's genuinely the best made film in the series
Look at the set design in About Schmidt 5:00 - the grey on grey world Jack comes from, vs. the passionate, colorful world of Bates.
1. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, Miyazaki
2. Hable con ella, Almodovar
3. The Man Without A Past, Kaurismaki (Cannes 55)
4. The Pianist, Polanski (Cannes 55)
5. Far From Heaven, Haynes
6. Heremakono, Sissako (Cannes 55)
7. Monsoon Wedding, Nair
8. About Schmidt, Payne (Cannes 55)
9. Ren xiao yao, Zhangke (Cannes 55)
10. 10, Kiarostami (Cannes 55)
Its incredible that neither of them had The Pianist on their list.
Yes, mind blowing. Although both are great films The Pianist > Schindler’s List.
It was fine but not great.
Spirited Away is one of the greatest films ever, as is 25th Hour.
Spirited Away has one of my favorite film scenes ever, and that’s the train ride. Not only does it provide a welcome pause to breathe, but everyone in the spirit world dreams of riding the train. It turns out to be nothing more than an ordinary commute, but if you’re a fantastical creature, what can be more fantastic than the mundane?
watching this only makes me miss siskel. :(
I feel that way much of the time with E&R, but I think Roeper was just fine for the first couple of years (2000-02). When Ebert's decline set in following his cancer surgery in 2003 (a few months after this episode), the show declined in direct proportion because Roeper became the dominant half of the act. There was too much passive, gentle camaraderie in the later years and not enough combativeness and competition. Gene was sometimes ready to pop out of his seat with enthusiasm, but Roeper was usually just jovial and casual.
Agreed!!!!!!!
Gangs of New York, Signs, and Red Dragon would have made my list. But my top for 2002 was definitely The Two Towers.
Far From Heaven is an incredible movie. Todd Haynes is an underappreciated director.
I was 10 that year. Saw spider man, 8 legged freaks and lilo and stich in theatres... man, i thought 8 legged freaks was cool back then, not anymore lol. Gots to check out a few of these. Minority report seems cool! I miss 2002 😩.
MY TOP FROM THAT YEAR IS SIMMILAR
1.GANGS OF NY
2.MINORITY REPORT
3.ADAPTATION
Aww, this was such a friendly show. In the older year's best, Siskel and Ebert would be butting heads on placement, but Ebert and Roeper have a fun dynamic here in talking about things they love.
Maybe cause Roeper was Ebert’s junior so he wasn’t as competitive?
Their dynamic was actually really boring and Roeper was an overly agreeable sycophant.
@@waynefisher9824 I don't like Roeper all that much, but this was just a pleasant top 10.
Adaptation and City of God were the two great movies of 2002. Gangs of NY is lesser Scorsese, a flawed picture. Minority Report is a spectacle, but it ought to have been even better than it was. I feel that Spielberg made some huge mistakes that kept the movie from being an action masterpiece.

I don't have a year by year list. I go by decades. The movies that really stood out for me. 2001-2010. Dirty Pretty Things and Pan's Labyrinth.
Ebert was just a better critic than Roeper. Siskel could never be replaced
Roeper wasn't actually a newspaper critic, just a columnist who wrote about movies sometimes. But he was from the same newspaper and a nice guy to talk about movies with.
Roeper added some youth, nobody could touch Siskel or Ebert but Roeper deserves more credit and he was good when Roger was off the air because of his health issues.
The show you used to watch that made you go to Blockbuster that same night
such an important year for movies, music, and video games. i think i must have seen almost all of these movies in the theater. its so sad what has happened to movie theaters.
I remember when About Schmidt won best Drama
Jack Nicholson: _"That's nice, but I was under the impression we'd made A Comedy"_
The interesting thing is, I'd have probably preferred Roeper's list (generally speaking) in 2002 when I was in my late teens... nowadays, Ebert's is better. Although, City of God was definitely my favourite film of 2002 back then.
Haven't seen 13 conversations though, so will have to check it out now
I’m definitely enjoying the love for Red Dragon!! It turns out Ratner is not a good human being but as a director he always received way too much hate from cinephiles. I will take RD over Manhunter any day of the week.
I can’t believe neither of them mentioned The Hours, or the BP winner that year Chicago
To me, City of God was the best film that year.
Dragonfly is one of my favourite dramas of 2002. It’s with Kevin Costner and Kathy Bates and Joe Morton that were mutually in movies directed by James Cameron. Such a beautiful movie about life and death. It’s a supernatural drama thriller and it has some vibes of The Sixth Sense.
Good to find you!
Damn forgot what a great year that was for movies. Almost all of them were seriously quirky, but great in their own way.

Thumbs up for including Insomnia.
Gangs of New York is criminally underrated. It might be my favorite Scorsese movie
It's actually sucks. Apart from DDL.
Gonna hafta disagree with you there…the final act is a mess
Yup, finale sucks, the romance sucks, it's got a lot of great scenes (mostly involving DDL) but they don't amount to anything, just a revenge story we have seen dozens of times done better. I honestly don't think the film even looks very good, the sets and costuming are mediocre.
Cameron Diaz is horrible
You have it backwards. You can hardly say it’s criminally underrated when it was mostly well received. I haven’t looked at RT in a long time but as I recall it received 70-some percent positive reviews. If anything I’d say it’s criminally overrated and really boring. A criminally overlooked film by Scorsese however is Silence. I think hardly anyone has seen it. It’s both a very thoughtful, well-made film and extremely thought provoking.
What a great year! Except Signs, for me jeje
Kinda surprised that Insomnia, Road to Perdition, or Panic Room didn't make either of their lists.
Panic Room isn't the kind of movie that makes critic lists. It may have been on a few that year, but at the time it was widely considered a commercial compromise for Fincher.
The panic room is one of Finchers weakest films IMO. I enjoyed Alien 3 more, but maybe it's because I really don't like Jodie Foster.
dissappointed the quiet american wasn't in hi-fi as advertised
Over 20 years later, Gangs of New York still a masterpiece
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Talk To Her my best of 2002
Pretty dam good. I saw it , The Pianist and Y Tu Mama Tambien in the same week Maybe the best Xmas ever ( but then again I am Jewish so not that high of a bar)
Watching this reminds me of why I stopped watching this show when Roeper came on because I thought he was such a dingbat. This opinion has never changed 😅
You are correct good sir. Richard has the reasoning skills and charisma of a piece of cardboard.
This was the year of Amelié and none of them ranked it. Damn...
Nope, Amelie hit American theatres in 2001. They both liked it a great deal, but it wasn't a Top 10 for either.

I thought One hour photo was excellent personally, Robin Williams had a good run around then, with Insomnia as well.
2002 is probably my favorite year for movies of this century so far, Minority Report is Spielberg's last great movie and somewhere in my top 5 of that year. About a Boy, Adaptation, About Schmitt were all great and 25th Hour met be my favorite movie for 2002.
Last great movie? He has had many great films since then. Catch Me If You Can, The Adventures of Tintin, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The Post, Ready Player One, The Fablemans, etc. Maybe you meant to say last great one to you.
@@NeoConnor1 Don't get butthurt because other people have standards.
Is no one going the mention the 2002 Best Picture winner "Chicago"? One of the best movie musicals ever made?!
Terrible flick
@@BL-mf3jp No it's not, is not, IS NOT!!!
I enjoy Chicago and its commentary on the criminal justice system and the media quite a bit myself.
2002 was definitely a rebound from the 2000-01 lousy years for movies.
2002 was the best year for movies so far in this century.
I enjoyed 'Minority Report' when I first saw it but the second time I realized it didn't make any sense. I have always hoped to run into Steven Spielberg so I could ask if the 'precops' had a bunch of 'pre-cogs' waiting in the wings for when the program went national. As far as it seems in the movie there are only the 3 and their powers seem limited to a small area. I have always wished that I could figure out how they planned to get volunteers to be in the program and since it was possible for the 'precogs' to make mistakes putting people in prison based on what they might or might not do seems absurd.
I feel like the missed it on minority report I don't remember enjoying that film but maybe I should give it another try
Is this missing bits or is it just me?
Copyright restrictions require edited film clips, but the rest is the episode as it aired.
Where's the tracking button?
Agree with Ebert on Gangs of New York, good movie, better than most because of Scorsese, but still weak. The script was poor and that's strange considering 3 of the credited writers each respectively wrote schindlers list, age of innocence, and one went on to write manchester by the sea.
The thing was just all over the place, going from a personal revenge story to commentary on american immigration history (no doubt a reaction to the anti-immigration and jingoism sentiment going on post 9/11), and finally jamming in civil war history right in the middle of the climax of the movie. On top of that you had useless subplots with Brendan Gleeson's and James Broadbent's characters.
This is even before getting into issues of Diaz's casting, DiCaprios bad and unnecessary accent, and DDL being allowed to be on an island with his acting while everyone watched.
Well...Ebert didn't agree with you on that. And I don't know you can feel this way about a movie and still call it "good"!
Wow. I know it was higher quality when I actually watched this. But damn, we’ve come a long long way.
Whatever happened to the screenwriters who wrote movies like these? Nothing like this in 2023
In all fairness, it's studios and corporate power that aren't ignoring talented writers.
Gangs of New York isn’t that great. It’s pretty boring in a lot of places
A beautiful mind won best pic
No that came out the year before. 2002 was the year of Chicago!
where is the full review of The Quiet American?
Not in the internet. No one has yet shared any of their 2002 content apart from a single summer episode.
I see, thanks
Roaper's list is absolute trash. F'n Signs?...seriously, Signs?!? Anyway, City of God is a perfect masterpiece. Easily the best film of the year
City of God is way better than Minority Report...
did they review insomnia 2002?
Yes, and it received Two Thumbs Up. Roger's print review is very strong.
They lost me at Signs
Didn't "The Hours" come out that year? It was brilliant, but apparently too female÷oriented for this pair.
Actually they both liked it a great deal. It was their job to see every major release. Which means they saw many brilliant pictures, and there is only room for 10 on each list.
It has little to do with sexism and more to do with how disjointed and maudlin the film is. It feels very stagey. I bet there were 40 better films that year, many of which have already been mentioned. I love Walter Chaw’s highly negative review of The Hours-it’s hilarious!
Signs? 🤣 Roeper is a clown!
edit: in his defense, it's quite a rough year for movies. City of God saved 2002, hands down.
Minority Report number 1?! what the hell?
It may not have been the critic's consensus pick that year, but it's a very well liked film.
It’s better than Gangs of New York at least.
Solid list, but both their number one's shouldn't be in the top ten at all.
Laughable that neither chose Lilya 4-ever
Interesting choice, but it would have counted as next year's movie for them, as it only hit theatres in the U.S. in April 2003. Roger might have seen it at the '02 Toronto Film Festival, but his journal entries provide no evidence of that. Professional critics aren't allowed to formally review a movie until a week before it hits theatres, especially back then.
@@flaccidusminimus2170 Silly me - I‘ve no idea why I thought the U.S. got it in 2002 (I’m in the UK and it came out in '03 here, but we usually get films after the U.S. anyway).
I didn’t know that about professional critics; it’s an interesting topic, especially when distributors refuse to screen films for critics (usually because they anticipate a poor reception). I suppose it makes sense to not allow reviews to be published until then because studios will want reviews to be close enough to the release date so that reviews help promote the film. Thanks for sharing!
The Academy award for best animation film in 2002 was won by Shrek. Just let that linger a bit - Shrek, rather than 'Spirited Away'.
As Ebert said, Miyozaki is the world's best animation film creator, and if he doesn't win, it is because somebody has a bias towards American movies.
Truly sad - it's a bit when 'The King's Speech' won the award for best movie instead of the 'Social Network', or when Jethro Tull won the Grammy for best award instead of Metallica.
No. Shrek was from the year 2001 and it won Best Animated Feature for films released that year (the first year for that category). Spirited Away did in fact win for the year 2002.
Philip Noice.
Looking at the clip and others below comments , I think it is fair to say that it was a very good year for films. Not sure of my actual Top 10 but Talk To Her, The Pianist , City of G-d, Y Tu Mama would defiintely be up there and likely ahead of Gangs of New York. It does speak to the greatnesss of MS that Gangs is a top ten film in most years and yet likely he has at least 3-4 better films. I will go negative and say that Adaptation is a pretentious piece of crap and Signs is at best mediocre but then again I find virtually everything Charlie Kaufman does is pretentious and that Shamalyan is always at his best.at being mediocre. Because Beijing Bycycle was released in China in 2001 I am somewhat surprised it did not get mentioned by them or others below. Worth checking out if someone likes Asian films
