  • Alrighty day 231! Today is Mirage Arcane. Loosing it for a different reason than fly for this one. Got this confused with hallucinatory terrain, in a number of it's features. For the classes available; Bard - makes an stage and field for a concert covered in decorations for the after party; Druid - the terrifying forest talked about in the video; Wizard - a crazy courtyard that's entirely misplaced compared to the surrounding terrain.

My biggest shock of this is this doesn’t have the usual clause with these type of spell of “if you cast it every day in the same spot for (X amount of time) the duration becomes “until dispelled.”

On "keeps the terrain's general shape," that's the trickiest square to circle with the rest of the spell, since it explicitly states a field can become a gorge or a lake, a rock-strewn gully a wide and open road, etc. This tells us that "general shape" probably is very loose, but the DM can put his foot down. Adding structures doesn't change the shape of the terrain, but is explicitly allowed. The fact that you can turn difficult terrain into normal terrain by turning a thorn-filled, narrow canyon into a wide and pleasant path through a forest suggests that we're looking at, yes, the "tactile illusion" including _removing_ things. But not major terrain features (except where you can, I guess). You can put a hole in a wall, but you can't remove the wall entirely.

This is the spell that wizards use to put up a village for a moving army. The only downside is that even if knowing its an illusion doesn't change how you interact with it, means that it can also be dispelled once you know its an illusion.

A vengeful Moon Druid drops a mirage arcane on a forest to surround a group of poachers with the "structure" of impassable natural stone walls: lets see if the hunters can survive being the hunted for a tenday. A bard creates the ultimate outdoor concert venue for their next big show, complete with stage, seating, and vendor stalls to see their overpriced t-shirts. A tactical illusionist wizard with the Keen Mind feat constructs the infrastructure for an entire city using a mental blueprint with mirage arcane, allowing them to add houses, roads, or walls for whatever needs happen to come up. That same illusionist wizard raises a protective 100-foot tall wall of adamantine around their city and traps an approaching army in an offensive circular prison: let the reverse siege begin! As the negotiations break down, the illusionist wizard transforms the army's circular prison into a circular pit of death: deep water to drown the army, molten lava to burn them to death, or a deep pit for them to fall to their deaths in. Mirage Arcane is one hell of a spell.

Making giant statues composed of any material you wish. And with malleable illusions you can make the statues move and do as you wish. Because they are technically structures not creatures. And nothing states how limited they are in movement, as long as they are inside that mile range you can move them anywhere instantly. The 100ft tall statue bends down and grabs an enemy, picks them up and the enemy is now restrained 100+ft in the air.

One grey area is that the height and depth of the spell aren't mentioned. It's definitely not limited to a few inches of surface because it can create hills, crevasses, and solidify ponds.
Taken to an extreme...could you drain oceans by creating a 1 mile x 1 mile x 1000 mile deep hole? If so... once the spell ends, the violent ejection of said water by the refilling hole would be unexaggeratedly world-ending.

So, I am running a Cthulhu themed 5e campaign and the party is about to meet a Moon-Beast in the dungeon. The Moon-Beast has Mirage Arcane as one of its powers... so I was thinking it could make the dungeon area seem like one of those Escher drawings where stairs go at impossible angles and such... very Cthulhu I feel.
Rule of cool says it works, but I am struggling a little with what effect if any this will have on the party as they fight the Moon-beast in the area? Terrain might just be difficult for them... and as far as they percieve they are on an upside down stairway 🙂
    What do you think?

    • @Zaktact
      @Zaktact  Год назад +2

I'd say have a speed trap of direction. Certain traps are only triggered when moving at full speed (or not half speed in another sense). So moving slowly the party can judge where they're actually going, going full speed (you could through in a save here so it's a risk, and if they fail) roll a d8 (1 being one side of the table and the following numbers for the directions the player could go clockwise from that). So charging head long they end up heading the wrong direction, to symbolize the confusing nature of the terrain. Could also have different stairs or doors which essentially act as portals to one another across the battlefield. Lair actions could be things like shifting terrain (placing cover somewhere), (making the save more difficult), trapping a player in a labyrinth for a turn or until a save). Sorry for the parenthesis, and good luck with running the session it sounds like fun.

If you go the route of a wizard that doesn’t want a pocket dimension this is perfect to just summon a house and a garden/forest for you to live in. How about food here? Does it fill you up or just the illusion -> could you starve people that think they are full? Or does it sustain them? Do you suddenly feel starved if you leave the “property”?
Then if you are a school of illusion wizard you get *Malleable illusion* at lvl 6 that allows you to change a lvl 1 or higher illusion to whatever the limits of the spell is.
    -
If used offensively you could make a mountain and then change it to a deep craves for max fall damage?
What happens if ppl are deep inside a cave or craves when it’s dispelled? Say someone in the cliff realizes it’s an illusion and cast dispel magic -> 1. Do they get buried/crushed for being inside a object (10d10 force damage iirc) for every turn or 2. Do they get ejected out at a rapid pace?
Make a desert and change it in to quicksand suffocating… even change the “war camp” to be in a desert then change it to quicksand… does they all just sink into the ground in the middle of the night?
What about covering the area in water, example in a valley or say surrounding the edge of one mile is mountains or tall hills and in between is water at the level of the hills/mountains. Will this potential drown everyone in the camp? Or at least the ones that can’t hold their breath or swim to the top (RIP heavy armor users)
    --
*Jeremy Crawford* said in a tweet.
“The mirage arcane spell gives you tremendous latitude in how you make the affected terrain look and feel. The altered terrain can even hurt someone. You could drown in the spell’s illusory lake, for example, or fall off an illusory cliff. #DnD”
This opens up illusion wizards from being kinda weak in damage (strong in RP) to become nightmare fuel in map control, damage and RP. (As long as you have 10min and your book)
Could you make an illusory copy of your spell book within the range? Then nobody could steal your real book when inside because you have this “copy”.
You could make a mansion to live in and if someone attacks you, you can change the layout of the house, filling rooms with liquid or mind warping layouts like doors in the floor and roof? or remove all doors and windows leading out. Even surround the house in lava or hovering over a abyss. Then it’s a cat and mouse game from your worst nightmares. This combined with phantasmal killer for style…
Could you cover a city in fog and slowly make their buildings deteriorate and tell them they have been cursed by a hag. Then tell them you can try to help for a payment? Then you just slowly “fix” things but the “curse” is to much and you need more resources….
Could you make a bubble under water with a forest and a mansion? Live on the bottom of the deepest ocean in a bubble, make a teleportation circle and have people come to your home. And if attacked you just dismiss and teleport out? Or even just change so the bubble disappears and water rushes back in if you want to keep the structure.
So many creative nightmare fuel scenarios…

    Ah wait!
Just take up meta magic adapt.
Then it is only a matter of waiting.
Worldbuildingwise this is the reason why you have no druids, bards and wizards at 13th lvl or higher.
The fact that this is an transmutation spell as an illusion spell is just insane.
Just at is base lvl you can create a one mile stinking cloud as it can create damaging terrain.
While the use of this spell to create fortresses kinda defeats the purpose of mighty fortress as an 8th lvl spell, it should be able to create the biggest moralboost a spell can provide. Just create a candy land for your soldiers and maybe some tiny servants and you have the basic needs of them covered. As an illusionist you are simply the matrix and even without a druid can turn his forest into a bastion of nature.
When your Dm allows for more advance stuff the spell breaks.
