Of course I encourage *everyone* to watch the *whole thing!* But to facilitate your life: 3:12 -- Fishing 8:20 -- Prepping 13:15 -- Cooking 15:53 -- Tasting 22:12 -- Afterword (highly recommended) P.s. recipe is in the description of the video. I hope you all understand that this catch-and-cook ain't your "entertainment" style catch-and-cook! By watching this video, not only you should be able to fully reproduce the dish that I have shared with you folks, but you should also be able to _responsibly_ harvest fish from your local waterways *and* care for your health and the health of your loved ones!!! If you are going to consume fish or give fish to others to be consumed, at least make sure that it is not poison, right? Heh. Alright, folks...hope you enjoyed this video! Tight lines and FISH ON!
but surely by not taking the hybrids, blue gill recruitment would be slightly harmed but the hybrid recruitment would be up, but by taking both still the hybrid recruitment would be up, because it is a hybrid haha
I remember my mom taking us fishing for bluegills when i was a kid while my dad was at work. Then she would clean them fillet them and cook them for dinner. A few years ago my friends and i were camping and we decided to catch some bluegills and cook them like my mom used to. Man , it took forever to clean enough bluegill to feed 6 people then cook them. My mom used to do it twice a week. When i got home i gave my mom a big hug and told her i appreciated everything she went through to keep us fed when we were growing up. This was a good homage video to your mom. People dont realize what parents actually DO for their kids. 👍
Same here, brother. My Dad and my Mom would clean the fish all the time. Crazy how long it actually takes to clean them that way, unless you are doing fillet! It tastes best when eating with others, though. Heh.
I am an avid daily fisherman and I have to say it is awesome to see the excitement and your overall attitude your true goal seems to just get people out there enjoying fishing like you and I do....great video keep up the good work and attitude my friend!
Dear Extreme Philly Fishing, I love your videos man! I hope you never stop. Keep up the great work and I hope that your mother had a great birthday! I mean, who knew her life would go on to affect so many lives! Wish her a happy birthday from the EPF fan family! Peace.
I've decided to make these fish a fixture of my diet. Both for health and monetary reasons, this is sensible. Thanks for showing us your cooking style. I bet the turmeric brings these full fold. My inner cook says lemon would be at home here.
I loved this video, and a blessed happy birthday to your Mom, you were raised well as I can tell, you have PASSION in what you do which is the KEY to success in any venture, best of luck to you and your Family.
I grew up in Western Colorado. This reminds me of how we used to cook fish on camping trips in the mountains. We did the flying in butter (sometimes lard) and different herbs mix, but otherwise very much the same. It's a fantastic way to enjoy freshly caught fish. Lard was used in longer pack trips in the Summer where we could not depend upon colder temperatures to preserve the butter. It wasn't until much latter in life that I discovered that butter, like lard, does not really spoil under short-term heat. Even so, lard imparts a very desirable flavor to fish. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! VERY ENJOYABLE.
As a kid growing up in Indiana I would ride my bike to a couple ponds in the woods, and bring home bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill to cook all through the summer. Starting around 9 or 10 years old I didn't mind cleaning and filleting crappie and bluegill, but after a while I stopped because I was tired of harvesting so little meat from them vs. the bass and catfish. I never considered the whole fish method for these panfish, and now I'm getting a hankering to give this method a try. Looks delicious, and that seasoned fried crunch is making me salivate! Great video Leo.
When smoking fish, you can go two ways... virtually no seasoning other than salt and then dress it up after. OR, go with a heavily spiced blackened type of seasoning. If it was salmon, I would go with an Asian marinade.
Brings me back to growing up in Indiana and catching a stringer full of blue gill for family cookouts. We always scaled and left skin on the fillets. I will try this method the next time I have a chance. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! I like your very informative style and explanations. What's fascinating is your enthusiasm and pure pleasure of fishing and eating. Great presentation. You should be on a radio or TV show. Thanks, roythegourd
Wow - I used to fish on those steps back in the 70's! Collingswood does not change & neither has the pollution, but it at least it looks better then back then!
This is why I'm so scribed Leo will tell you everything you need to know about fish trying to eat it how to catch it and how to respect it keep them coming leo good job
Hi Leo, Another great video! Thank you for sharing your fishing adventures. You are a good son by honoring your mom. I've seen some of your other videos. Your parents must be proud of you and you must have an awesome understanding wife. I appreciate the education (and coaching too!) and the cooking sessions as well as well as the actual fishing. Tight Lines and Take It Easy friend.
Leo, that’s the way I was brought up to eat fish and to this day I still have my white perch that way. I grew up in the south and we were taught not to waste anything that we harvested. Loved your video, informative and entertaining. Tight lines..
Wow now that you mention it I don't think I've ever had a filet while in South America. Red Snapper is one of my favorite fish to eat and I've only had that whole.
only thing missing was the rice flower beer batter you have to try it Leo extra crispy on a fresh potato bread bun with lettuce and pepperjack cheese slice of tomato and onion ring on top of the tomato
Always enjoy your videos, lucky save on your baits buddy. Lol, you fished them right out. Keep on rocking buddy. Thanks to you, knowing the right selection when winter fishing. Blessings to you sir.
The creek next to my house is a little honeyhole for bluegills every time it rains enough to fill it! I have a little concrete pile in there, the bluegill can't resist hanging out in there once the waters recede a bit- dropshot heaven!
The "hybrid" is a redear sunfish. Here in Louisiana we call them shell crackers because they like to eat snails. They are delicious. In the picture you took of it, you can see the small red spot behind the gill plate.
hey leo nice video, in jamaica we season the fish with salt and black pepper u can use fish spice as well and then fry it. we also make escovitch sauce by heating white vinegar with onion, hot peppers, carrots, and bell peppers its really good and i hope you'll give it a try.
I never have any luck filleting smaller bluegill like that... I figured you tried filleting that first one...looked at what you got...tossed those quarter sized fillets in the trash...and decided to scale the rest. ;)
Well it's official I like watching Leo eat LOL! So now we will have to give Leo enough cash to book a few dozen flights so he can morph into my new favorite travel vlogger.
I’ve caught many hybrids out of a pond that look just like the second fish you caught. I believe that those are bluegill-green sunfish hybrids, because the only other species I’ve caught in that pond I are bluegill and green sunfish. There could be pumpkinseeds I guess, but I’ve never caught any. Thought it was cool that I’ve caught that same hybrid fish.
For everyone out there I know a good recipe too cornmeal spread on the fish and then just put oil in the pan and throw them in the pan tastes best with trout
That hybrid as you called it looked like a small red ear sunfish, there range isn’t that far north as far as I know, but there has been reports of them up to DC. so not a huge surprise to see one In jersey
That is not a hybrid @ 5:00 .....These are a red ear sunfish, in the south they are called shell-crackers. They are the biggest version of the sunfish family, and they get quite big. The sunfish family tree has like a dozen different breeds that are all lumped together and called bluegills.
I just caught a large mouth off that same exact pole was nightcrawler fishing for perch and had a 1l large mouth pick it up it’s great cause it feels like u have a giant when using that tiny pole
My dad used to eat bluegill like this. He was born during the Great Depression and grew up during WW2 and the 50's. They would fry up the fish and eat them just like this.
I had "sunnies" when i was like 8 years old if i remember correctly. Never has them since but i liked them at the time. I never cooked any myself but this year i will!!! I thought the bigger the better so its nice to know what size to catch.
Cooked the same way in Florida accept coated with corn meal with grits on the side. Yellow grits are best. Maybe a couple eggs and toast. That’s breakfast.
Leo If you do catch and cook walleye or crappie you should clean the inside and scale it keep the head on then put it on aluminum foil fill, stuff the inside with lemongrass, whole chili(opinional),green onion, ginger and garlic and sprinkle some salt inside and cover the whole fish with aluminum foil and bake it in a oven till its ready. P.s would work with other fish but best with either whole walleye, whole crappie and whole tilapia
With bluegill, or any kind of fish, my dad would just scale it, take intestines out, score each side, then fry it. That allows the bones throughout the body to become real easy to crumble, like chips.
Of course I encourage *everyone* to watch the *whole thing!* But to facilitate your life:
3:12 -- Fishing
8:20 -- Prepping
13:15 -- Cooking

Alright, folks...hope you enjoyed this video! Tight lines and FISH ON!
hey leo maybe iv broken the golden rule o YT and not wathed the entire video and commented but why not eat the hybrids?
Why wouldn't want to eat the hybrid?
Cuz they are rare in that watershed, BUSHCRAPPING. I always eat what is common, and release what is uncommon.
but surely by not taking the hybrids, blue gill recruitment would be slightly harmed but the hybrid recruitment would be up,
but by taking both still the hybrid recruitment would be up, because it is a hybrid haha
damn leo u savage im so jealous, i need to do a bluegill fry soon! keep being awesome!
I remember my mom taking us fishing for bluegills when i was a kid while my dad was at work. Then she would clean them fillet them and cook them for dinner. Beast Man almost got a tear reading this lol but yes, our parents will go through hell for us to be happy and well fed
Same here, brother. My Dad and my Mom would clean the fish all the time. Crazy how long it actually takes to clean them that way, unless you are doing fillet! It tastes best when eating with others, though. Heh.
Beast Man foreals I cleaned 4 of them and it took me a while and that was my first time ever catching and eating a fish
1) Fishing out his dropped worms
2) Eating the bones
3) Chugging Dew w no burp
======> SAVAGE
John Frank lmao
Is this man just gonna throw away his worms because they got wet?
I love Leo! He's the common man's fisherman of youtube. Keeping things simple and providing a lovely amount of education in the process.
I grew up here in Florida I've caught and ate bluegill all my life ,
Bluegill and crappie are my favorite fish to eat.
I tried this method amd i will never fillet my panfish again. This was amazing. Thank you Leo
No rice? No 🥦broccoli? Mashed potatoes 🥔? Looks well-cooked & tasty. Well done. From the stream to a plate.
I am an avid daily fisherman and I have to say it is awesome to see the excitement and your overall attitude your true goal seems to just get people out there enjoying fishing like you and I do....great video keep up the good work and attitude my friend!
This is probably the best catch and cook video on youtube
I am only a few minutes in and I can already tell this is going to be good! Chef Leo is in the kitchen!
I hope you enjoy the entire video! I put a lot of love in that cooking. Hahaha.
Extreme Philly I can tell! I want to try this now!
Thats the best way to eat small fish.
Curious what the thrown out fish with parasites/worms looked like
Exactly! So I know what to look for

Watching you enjoy them as much as you just did makes me want to do this

Every time My moms cooks fish and serves it I always go to the refrigerator and get some lime and put it on my fish
lime and salt is the best
eating the bluegill? Next time bring them over here Leo and we will put them on the smoker. A collab catch and cook.
Fish Finder oh got any recipes? I've got a smoker and want to try out some gills or cats.
When smoking fish, you can go two ways... virtually no seasoning other than salt and then dress it up after. OR, go with a heavily spiced blackened type of seasoning. If it was salmon, I would go with an Asian marinade.
I wanna see that
When I get a piece of salmon I will do it, but I will most likely upload that video on my other channel where I do more cooking... Flannel Guy DIY
One of the best videos yet, very great information on selective harvest. Not a lot of people really understand selective harvest. Great job Leo!
Brings me back to growing up in Indiana and catching a stringer full of blue gill for family cookouts. We always scaled and left skin on the fillets. I will try this method the next time I have a chance. Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoy that you give us viewers education on the pollutants and such on the fish, I love this so much, great video!

We smoke our trout whole. The cheek is one of my favorite part.
Thanks for teaching me how to eat blue gills. I use to only eat the meat part.
Great video, dude! Thanks for the info, and I really appreciate the demonstration on how to eat the whole fish. Thanks, and tight lines, Leo!
when you check the oil with the chopsticks was so funny for me :P cause I do the same thing
I can't wait to get back on the lake this year. I miss eating some good ole bluegill. Delicious fish.
Leo, that’s the way I was brought up to eat fish and to this day I still have my white perch that way. I grew up in the south and we were taught not to waste anything that we harvested. Loved your video, informative and entertaining. Tight lines..

I never outgrew this. take my kids bluegill fishing for catch and cook one my favorite to eat.
Holy smokes u devoured all those fish lol take it easyyyyyyyy
I never have any luck filleting smaller bluegill like that... I figured you tried filleting that first one...looked at what you got...tossed those quarter sized fillets in the trash...and decided to scale the rest. ;)
I will try this one day it looks amazing.
great video man, getting better and better!
Well it's official I like watching Leo eat LOL! So now we will have to give Leo enough cash to book a few dozen flights so he can morph into my new favorite travel vlogger.
What's the best way to dispatch the fish? And should it be right after catch? Or should it be thrown on ice?
I’ve caught many hybrids out of a pond that look just like the second fish you caught. I believe that those are bluegill-green sunfish hybrids, because the only other species I’ve caught in that pond I are bluegill and green sunfish. Really enjoy your channel! plenty of saltwater fishing channels out there. But I really enjoy the freshwater fishing footage. keep up the good work
Thank you very much for all the love and support. I appreciate the feedback, Warren. Tight lines!
Eating bait? Taking the micro-fishing to the next level. 😆 love the channel
For everyone out there I know a good recipe too cornmeal spread on the fish and then just put oil in the pan and throw them in the pan tastes best with trout
I appreciate your videos and explaining this to other people, I live in the Portland Oregon area and people always want to just keep the "big ones".
That hybrid as you called it looked like a small red ear sunfish, there range isn’t that far north as far as I know, but there has been reports of them up to DC. so not a huge surprise to see one In jersey
Extremely educational-awesome!!!!! Thank you
leo is a national treasure who must always be protected

I have fished there several times, nice video Leo!
Oooo man.....epf you make me more and more hungry.....in my country when we fry fish like that we use to be eat with "sambal"
You need to do another one of these catch and cook bluegill videos again Leo. 👍🏻
hybrid is called a chinquapin. They get big here in Louisiana
Thanks a lot Leo now my wife wants some bluegill I'm not complaining I want some to great video
Trying this as soon as i can catch some bluegill. Thanks for this brotha!
Cooked the same way in Florida accept coated with corn meal with grits on the side. Yellow grits are best. Maybe a couple eggs and toast. That’s breakfast.
Man I love your catch n cooks Man!
just got back into fishing, great video man!
Aye this what I was waiting for Leo. Nice video and you should do a catch and cook for walleye and other kinds of fish.
This is the best video about eating bluegill, great job 👍
Happy Birthday Sun!
I’ve never seen a blugull catch and cook and nice video
A nice fish dinner with Mountain Dew on the side? That's class right there.
With bluegill, or any kind of fish, my dad would just scale it, take intestines out, score each side, then fry it. That allows the bones throughout the body to become real easy to crumble, like chips.
