I feel like this is just such a perfect song for the boss itself. One of like the big main bosses yet still feels more like you are just trying to save the abyss watchers rather than actually beating them. Corrupted by the abyss they are just forced to fight each other over and over again as they keep resurrecting, dying to one of their own and repeating in an infinite loop until you finally come and end all of their misery for good. It's just such a sad thing.
The most poetically sad detail about this is that even in a ravenous mindless state, they're still inherently loyal to their duties and the oaths they swore. In constant dying and reincarnating...they're killing eachother because they themselves are corrupted by the abyss.
Yes. Exactly. I always am almost pushed to tears listening to this song. It just feels so heavy and sad. To this day I’m amazed that they composed something like this.
Yeeesss Ive been waiting for this since the first Dark Souls react. Even though it's such an early Boss and probably one of the easiest, nothing beats the atmosphere and pure envoirmental tragic storytelling it gives you. These guys are the best example of how Dark Souls tells it's story, as soon as you enter the Bossroom your mood and emotions instantly switch due to the pure despair you're seeing and at least for me it gave me this feeling of "I have to do this, I don't know why but I have to free them from whatever it is they need freeing of". It's a super tragic Boss and the Soundtrack just really takes that to a whole new level.
Probably one of my favourite themes in the souls series along with midir and gael, the fact that this theme manages to tell so much of the abyss watchers story without any actual words is really impressive
To this day I am still heavily biased towards Dragonslayer Armour. Its such a perfect OST for a tragic hero theme. and remains one of my fav OSts. The only thing to criticise about it is earrape phase 2 and phase 1 is too short ;(
I’m not sure how you feel about fan remixes but if you liked the abyss watchers theme I highly highly recommend Alex Roe’s remix of it called All For One
I have heard many positive opinions about this piece. They break repeating patterns. Music doesn't have to be uplifting in a fight. It can be depressing, almost like a funeral procession. Dark Souls III is the saddest part of the trilogy. Summarizes the death of fire, the death of the sun. Death to all and everyone who fear the dark. Humans having fun btw ^^
Knowing the Abyss Watcher lore and why this song is written in such a tragic and somber tone amps the experience of the boss fight up to 11. To top it off, the second phase of the Abyss Watchers boss is characterized by a single enemy that makes very slow but wide, sweeping acrobatic motions, where the movements are heavily outlined by a flaming blade. There is an almost operatic art to even the combat its self, as if its something out of a ballet or other theatrical performance. The song really matches the feeling of fluidity and tragedy, but without ever letting up on that ever important tension that makes you feel like you can't afford to make a single mistake. +1 to recommending checking out All for One, the remix. That one mixes in a very special musical easter egg from Dark Souls 1, just in case the storytelling behind the Abyss Waters OST wasn't enough.
I do love how a pretty fast paced boss fight has a very subdued and morose theme. It's a great contrast. Also, do Sister Friede next! It's my favourite fight in the trilogy, and the theme is brilliant
This part of the game was amazing, I died so many times as it was my first souls game. After dying so much I leveled up to 50 and even then, by just standing outside of the boss room/fog gate and hearing the abyss watchers fighting each other with the loud sounds of their great swords clashing terrified me. I knew I was likely to die. Eventually I beat the boss and the entire game. This was a great moment in my life.
You can't feel the right emotions without hearing it into the battle and knowing the back story of Arotrias and why this mighty warriors are killing each others over and over !
I don't have very good ear for game music, specially when I'm playing. But I remember Abyss Watchers was the best boss fight in the entire game, DLCs included. Not only in terms of dynamics and gameplay, but also in atmosphere and story. Your interpretation of the music is on point with what's going on when you find these tragic warriors. It's like fighting Eddy in Silent Hill 2, you don't want to, but they you don't have another option.
There is also the remix made by Alex Roe, its such a ggod remix that it literally sounds like its from the game. I once did a bit of a challenge with someone were I had them listen to the original tracks and Alex Roe's remixes, and had them guess which ones were the remixes, they got the more obvious ones right, but some they were stumped on since the remixes are so well made.
@@xanthiusdrake2775 Yeah i listened that already and really liked it but my favorite part of this music is the violin and that remix didn't have them that much. Also i love how the music is so tranquil and sad which fits perfectly to the beatiful violin and female voice. I love it so much that i think it's Yuka's best work.
The abyss watchers are basically elite badasses that are also Artorias Fanboys. They dedicate their lives to fighting the abyss. Minor boss/lore spoilers but it's somewhat predictable if you are familiar with the other dark souls games. "When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes back into you," and just like Artorias, the Abyss Watchers themselves slowly become corrupted. You don't fully realize this until during the boss fight, you notice some of the abyss watchers have the tell-tale sign of glowing red eyes and the less-corrupted abyss watchers will try to kill it (in addition to you.) You are literally watching the boss kill themselves before you step in to deliver the final blow, and exterminate them for good. They weren't necessarily evil, but they were corrupted and aggressive and had to be stopped nonetheless. All of this slowly unfolds as the music begins swelling with dark, tragic tones that match the lore and the gameplay mechanics of the boss perfectly. The team at FromSoftware are really experts at blending every form of art, the music, the environments, the animations, asset design, the storytelling and lore, even gameplay mechanics are all intertwined together to form a cohesive and unified mood and narrative, it's an amazing way to experience Art.
What a nice reaction and break down of the track. Its one of my favorites as well the song and as the boss fight. It would be amazing if you could play Dark Souls 3. I really enjoyed your other playthroughs a lot and especially the soundtrack reviews at the end. Keep up the good work and have a nice day. :)
This music just makes me feel sad. I knew the instant the fight started i was fighting the last bits of Artoias. I always considered him a good guy. I didnt even want to fight him in DS1 and i surly didnt want to kill the last bits of him that were still left in the world. Its sad.
I have a soft spot toward this sound track, for me it is a reminder that this is the last Dark Souls game of the series, the last journey. Damn I am getting emotional now time to replay DS3!
My favourite track of DS3. Which is very strange with so many epic and nostalgic tracks. It just feels like, we lost a battle we really shouldn't have. That something truly good and noble died. And maybe we should've been there to help. It's foreboding loss to me. We lost this battle. And the whole war will be over soon as well. We just won't like the outcome.
This track actually has really interesting lyrics. Something along the lines of that the Watchers feel like they were betrayed by the fire, and are saving you from the fallacy of the lie.
@@dannyxigbar7484 To add to this, it was confirmed in tweets by the composers of DS3 themselves. Unfortunate that the lyrics are the way they are, but let's not pretend they mean anything.

The fact that this song is so "tame" it's because The Abyss Watchers are basically a lost cause. They fought to protect others from the corruption of the Abyss, but just like their former leader Artorias, they fell to the corruption as well, so you come into that battle to end their misery.
I always thought the bells were a reference to dark souls 1 because while your walking around the first areas in dark souls 1 you'll always hear a bell ringing randomly. This also would align with the fact that the abyss watchers have a connection to a dark souls 1 boss.
The fact that you didn’t listen to Gherman’s theme and probably never will it’s really sad. I really been waiting for a couple years for that video, ever since you started doing this video reactions and breakdowns.

such a somber tone for a group of knights endless fighting each other trying to defeat the abyss within.
Abyss watchers are amazing but the twin princes and the dragonslayer armors themes are pure art.
