Several things you could have done better: 1) spread your infantry line longer, your infantry rank is too deep. when your ranks are 5-6 men deep, the guys at the back aren't contributing to the fight. 2) should have maneuvered your cavs to get into the rear or flanking position earlier to draw a few arrow volleys or make the opponent pull a unit or two away from the main fight, allowing your infantry to win easier 3) the matchlock bait unit should have fired at least one volley before engaging the spear ashigaru, and even better you could have kited them to keep them engaged longer. 4) should have used 1 cav to disrupt the archers and 1 cav to attack the general. would have won the battle a lot sooner if you take out his general first, which is easy with yari cavs. 5) if you are patient enough, could have waited and force him to advance and sacrifice his height advantage. otherwise a good fight
Its so hard to think stright and quick in the fight and because of that i think that it takes much time to learn to be calm in hard situations like this... Also your advices looks good so i will try to remember about them when i try to win another battle ;)
I take issue with points 2 and 4 2the bulk of his armies strength was his cavalry, his infantry was basically worthless so there would be no point in sacrificing perfectly good cavalry to save low teir infantry 4 sending cav to attack a general can be dangerous, BG's can lock down any cav unit if microed well and someone running a full melee spec can outfight shogunate guard cav 1 on 1, not to mention the close proximity to spear units
@Username93611 This battle was essentially won by, principally, poor use of yari. Second, his unit of infantry, missing in action mid-battle, third, his dangling general, rather than a sound strategy on either side's part.
at around 6:00 u say that your units r starting to waver cause of heavy casualties - but also look - he used the rally ability, and if he had a retainer which allowed the rally ability to also decrease the morale of the enemy units, then... yea u get me)) i think that was the case then) good vid
I usually take a defensive position, when the opponent has the upperhand when it comes to numbers, and use Yari Ashigaru in yari wall to hold the line while I send swords to flank. If I have calvary then its even better. Use those puppies to break their general, then bows. Great plays here dude.
@I am I placed my katana in a single file and charged into their 3x Spear units. Kept them under 'hold' orders. My general had to be used to run around the back of their melee line and repeatedly charged their two archer units. It was only possible after the enemy general engaged my katana after a few minutes. High experience on both units, use of 'inspire' and improved weaponry on katana unit. 😇
I always get 4 units of Yari cav. Tip-Always get cav as you can win even if they have a spear army or have spear support always get cav my tip always works for me. Get Rid of hist cav first. So then you can do hammer and anvil strikes.
Nice walkthrough, the other guy gave you quite a bit of a chance. Maybe he was waiting to see if you had other ambushers? I don't know why he wouldn't pepper your cavalry with bowfire from the outset, they're pretty vulnerable to it.
@fishsandwichpatrol is your general a melee cavalry or missile cavalry? I couldn't really see, and i was hoping missile cavalry was back, like in RTW generals could be missile cavalry. Oh yeah, and also, matchlock are gunmen right? I wasn't sure since i havent played this game b4.
use your cavalry to draw infantry spear away from his core on the flanks. then while you do that your main force can smash the middle.. he wont have a choice but to keep his infantry spears out of the fight he will eventually put them in to try break the fray, when he does charge the flanks repeatedly and boom
@@blitzkierg3455 make contact and trigger combat then pull them back. Dont hit withdraw let the cavalry move away as the combat stage remains engaged and the infantry will follow for a bit. Once they stop run them again and repeat. You'll lose some.horses but it draws the front lines out enough to get infantry on the flanks. Or use the cavalry to pull them to the flank and use archers from the side which negates armour bonus and dodge bonus. Keep the horses out of tree lines.. keep the horses in open formation as well as their archers will be trying to shoot the cav you can effectively break up their front line like this and have some heavy shock infantry ready to smash into the centre with light support on the flanks. Then get your cav to the sides and start assisting the light I gantry with charge after charge into their rear. Ir run down their archers and route them causing a break test. You can route entire armies like this.
I dont rly know why it is but when you control your army in the Shogun 2 you rly feel like it would be a real battle! I cant rly feel that way in other TW games like for example Rome II ;/ TW Shogun 2 is just on the peak of TW franchise... Everything that was made after it wasnt that good... ;/
Yeah cuz i bought Rome II (because i like the period) and wanted to feel great in it but even tho now after patches its not bad it still falls short comapred to Shogun 2 ^^
Gotta say, that didn't seem to bad. It was a Ashigaru-centric enemy army and you had matchlocks. Bows or not, those matchlocks could have wrecked them. I also gotta say it'd probably have been a safe idea to dismount the general, who becomes basically a Katana hero.
Nah, he easily kept his general away from spears. Mounted they have far more health. Its only worth in dire straights when needing to engage high level spear units.
I'm just getting into Shogun 2 and haven't had any experience with multiplayer yet, and my Google-Fu is failing me; what are the lone sword units? Are they like ronin?
why didn't you hit his general with your Yari Cav? isn't that gonna have a big penalty on your enemy's morale? or is that the wrong thing to do? Cause i recently did a sneak attack on an enemy general in an MP battle; early game. "killed his general " before our armies even engaged.
I could be stupidly wrong as I'm new to total war, but by breaking up the archers and disrupting his enemies lines he gave a bit more advantage to his infantry, when he finally does attack and kill the general with his cavalry (from the rear) it's easier than a head on confrontation - and at that point in the battle losing the general causes the rest of his army to break
@@jameshetherington1 Do remember in this battle the enemy general was initially guarded by a yari ashigaru. Killing the bows and relieving his crumbling infantry line is the right move. Even if you kill the enemy general as long as their units are doing well in their fights they will not route.
Posting losses wouldn't really help people play the game. The reason he used the matchlocks the way he did was to try and split the other army up so his own wouldn't get mauled straight away and he could effectively move his cavalry about. I think as the enemy had more infantry units he would be able to commit some to the matchlocks and tear them apart, however it would've been useful to move the matchlocks high up so they could cause some damage to the infantry and maybe rout some of them.
The campaign mode is devilishly hard IMO - easy for learning is a good call. The biggest things to understand are: 1 - the rock/paper/scissors nature of cavalry/spears/swords. Spears generally beat cavalry, swords generally beat spears, and cavalry is generally good against most footsoldiers except spears (and is very fast/good for flanking to boot.) 2 - the difference between Ashigaru and Samurai. Ashigaru are halfway between peasants and professional soldiers, while samurai are very elite (better morale, better attack, better armor). You'll do well with a mix of both - Ashigaru to roadblock, and Samurai as the hammer. The difference between quality can sometimes upset the rock/paper/scissors dynamic long enough to cause a key rout. The downside to Samurai is they cost a lot more to recruit/upkeep, and take longer to train, hence why mixing Ashigaru in can balance the pricetag. You can also net some free kills with missile units in the right situations, but they are often very vulnerable to melee, and will evaporate under cavalry. Make sure you put them in skirmish mode if you dont want to watch them too hard, that makes them run away when threatened with melee. Also, after your lines engage, turn off fire and will and tell them to halt so you dont arrow your buddies! Alternatively, pick another enemy to shoot that is not currently fighting with your boys. I dont leave home without 3-4 in an army. A good way to start is to have spears within reach of flanks/ rear to try and punish a flanking move with cavalry. Swords are generally good as the main battle line. Outnumber enemy units as often as possible without opening your sides/rear to nearby baddies. Other tips - you want to cause a mass rout in order to win. Things that hurt enemy morale include losing at a fight/casualties (where rock/paper/scissors comes in), being attacked on the flanks/rear, being tired, being outnumbered, and friends routing. Sometimes even moving a unit to threaten a flank can cause a unit to break. To defend against morale, you are trying to prevent the above. In addition, you get boosts from the general being in range, and some general abilities like rally/inspire. Practice makes perfect! Good luck!
A tip with matchlocks. Use them on more heavily armoured units like heros or general or something. they dominate against heavy armoured units. also can we play eachother oneday. if so tell me ur steam username in pm. very good battle btw

Many times your victories come down to errors on the part of your opponent, rather than sound strategy that you discuss in your video "what is strategy." Here, you stress your discomfort at having to use cavalry to win the battle. That has more to do with your lack of familiarity with using a non-infantry core to win. The matchlock units were useless here, but only the way you used them.
the funny thing is that battles arent won with strategy anymore in SHOGUN... join any game and if u don't have vets + clan tokens uve already lost.. even if u flank and have the high ground. Utter bullshit... EXAMPLES: i once sent 2 great guard and one yari cav against one vetted up fire cav with clan tokens (they all routed despite hammering a unit that was just walking and from multiple sides), Another time i sent my fire rockets against an enemies to do a comparison (mine are level 7 vets) his are also level 7 (but with clan tokens) and the range on his unit's is literally 1.5 times what mine are... they got destroyed before even being anywhere near in range to fire So yeh strategy is useless, players with clan tokens and vets just right click ur front most guy and go take a piss... dont even get me started on DLC advantage over default units on top of all of that.

You need infantry. An entirely cavalry army will be devastated unless they can keep moving constantly. Cav is not everything, but it is very useful.

They are not available in the main campaign unless you are Ikko Ikki I believe
