In this video I'll show a tutorial on how to play "Ring of Fire", the classic made famous by Johnny Cash. I'll teach you how to do a complete solo acoustic version of the song, which isn't quite how Cash played it given he typically had his band with him. I'll show you the chords, strumming pattern needed, and also explain how to mimic the sound of the mariachi horns on your guitar. Enjoy!
Timestamps:
- 0:00 Playthrough & overview
- 2:04 Chords and strumming basics
- 6:25 Mariachi lead riff w/ tab

Thanks mate
Can we get a strumming pattern
It's on the video
Very, very good lesson, many thanks for taking the time out to do this, stay safe😎
Really good lesson. Super teacher. Many thanks.
This, my friends, is a definition of good guitar lesson. This guy doesn't talk too much, give all the details necessary, offer the easier and the harder ways of playing. Thank you for a good lesson
I agree. There are some that talk for the first three minutes. I give them two then find someone else to teach me. I didn't sign on to listen to theory. Shut up and teach me the song!
A really nice and simple way to play a great song. I am into my 70's just learning guitar and this kind of help is really great. Thanks.
Keep rocking man! From one generation to another ❤️
It's never too late to start👍🏼 wish more people would start like you and not let age get in the way
Keep it up G
Dude! I’m 65...I’m retired military....and retired law enforcement. You being a bit more experienced than me, you give me inspiration. I recently lost both parents...acting as their Executor. Stress was killing me....I wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail, but parental issues intervened. So....I picked up this guitar (an old Sigma that I bought in the Navy and never played....but it travelled the world!!). You -- not unlike Dale “Greybeard” Sanders, who at 82 completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail -- folks like you remind me that while not as chipper as I (we) used to be -- age? It’s just a gol-durned number. Keep on strumming’, brother!
@@captaincoyote1792 Hi thanks for the reply I am so glad to give you inspiration, I always believe in looking to the bright side of life, I have just had treatment for cancer and my whole family were scared for me and the only way I could cope was to be bright and cheerful, moaning would not have changed my prospects whereas being happy created and aura of hope and so far, 2 years have passed, I feel great. My wife of many years is my rock my soul mate my life and boy was I glad that if anyone got cancer in our family it would be me because I can cope when its me but I may fall to pieces if were my wife child or grandchild,. So make the most of life my friend Good luck with your future keep smiling best regards Clive UK.
The more I watch David's tutorials, the more I respect his style. Always very clear and concise and seems to suit my playing level. Thanks, David.
Thank you for this. My little brother passed in December and he had a lot of Johnny Cash on his playlist. I inheranted his guitar and can't set it down, so I found myself here. Thanks again.
Sorry for your lost man
Sorry for your loss and I'm blessed hearing you have something you can remember and keep about him.
Keep at it … he hears you!
Life is tough … I have found guitar helps deal with it. For you … there is added benefit
I hate all of the other teachers on RUclips APART FROM YOU!! You’re so clear!! 😍😍😍 I love you keep it up!!!
Better then Marty Music by far. Way more in depth and clear. Your a legend.
I’m only 16 years old but I absolutely LOVE old music. So learning this was very fun. Thank you.
Hi all
This is Henri from UK. 69 years old retired bored and about to pick up the guitar. This guy is the best, simple easy but concise and I cant wait to get started.
His lesson is likely the best lessons out here. On point, does not waste time, and slows down exactly where you might get confused . He draws you in on how simple it can be and naturally adds the next complexity. If you ever decide to post videos to teach, use this guy as a template
If @ThisOldTony gave guitar lessons, this is what it would be like. And that's a high praise.
Beautiful version and encouraging. It will be a very special surprise and gift for my lovely wife. We both love Johnny Cash 🤗🎶💎🌈☀️
I've been trying to learn guitar now for a month, I have seen a lot and lot of tutorials, this is by far the most comprehensive. thank you very much. I'll have to show off to my kids now.

Rick Williams - Man, your videos and laid back method of teaching Guitar is EXCELLENT. for the beginner and intermediate Guitarist. I really use the suddle nuances you add to cord changes. The simple cords and cord progression gives the beginner somewhere to start playing actual songs which will keep the interest level up!!!. GREAT JOB!!
