- California Games is a 1987 Epyx sports video game for many home computers and video game consoles. Branching from their popular Summer Games and Winter Games series, this game consisted of some sports purportedly popular in California including skateboarding, freestyle footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc (frisbee) and BMX.
The game sold very well, topping game selling charts for winter months. It also got very positive reaction from reviewers, many of whom consider California Games to be the last classic Epyx sports game, due to staff changes not long after its release.
The game was followed in 1991 by California Games II, but the sequel failed to match the original's success.

Oh wow, that really is some advanced CGI trickery! 10/10!
The trick to the surfing was, if you did a jump you needed to re-enter the water at the same angle as when you left
I can't believe that I played this game all the time when I was a kid. I don't remember those chunky big pixels in my mind (maybe in a kid's memory, the sprites are rendered better, who knows)
The imagination can be powerful. I have vivid memories of football games played on the "Football 2" handheld (Mattel) and it's display was just a grid of 9x3 LEDs.
well maybe because you use old monitors back then
since most pixels is blurred because of limitation or artifacts from tv's or monitors back then, also remembering that when i was kid(2007) 720p was a best resolution while 1080p was superior and nowdays 4k is tye best bet and 8k is superiors while 1080p is for gaming performence
Same here😂we're old but that memories lives forever. Such an epic games whoever made this is a genius
I used to play this in the 90's on my computer. I still love it!
87clami I would love to play it again. Many fond memories and countless hours trying to master it. These were the days before you could look up guides and videos and you sometimes pull off moves you can never do again. Great times.
Amazing how bad the sound was, don't know if it's supported a sound card or not
Wow. Those were impressive, especially for CGA, and especially the waves animation!
thanks for sharing this piece of gaming history. Love the colours.
I played this all the time in the 90's. Good memories! Thanks for posting this. I wish I still had these games!
Everything about this game is so classic. I used to always pick Santa Cruz from memory.
fun times !
Ahh, BMX ! You could even start with a frontal flip of the starting ramp !
I remember with the flying disc that if you just sit there and don't throw it, a UFO eventually comes and abducts the other player on the right.
Totally forgot you had to pick a sponsor! Good stuff
WOW! This is the stuff my childhood is made of!
I played this game as a kid. Cool memories :D as well Roger Wilco, Police Quest, Prince of Persia, etc :D
Hours of fun! Favorite game was hacky sack!
Wow memories..! I miss Epyx!!

A masterpiece... I remember trying to do every trick possible in "Foot Bag" or the best scores in the other games
This reminds me when I was 15
If i hit the bird that's a big win for me😂
I remember I had a version where if you fell of your surfing board, in a specific way, and you waited a bit, a SHARK showed up from the water.......I couldn't find this version.......
NES version has a shark every once in a while

Awesome. I was hoping to see the handstand in half-pipe lol
19:57 This kind of games are popular on phones right now. Logic is same :)
I remember this game.
Very good graphics and gameplay for its time. Just sounds effects are bit weird and sound pretty old considering that C64 always produced excellent music tracks.
Still recognize the music/sound😂
The intro is... Futurama? (Pierre Henry - Psyché Rock)
"Flying Disc" was so hard...
Surprisingly good work on the anti-aliaisng of graphics
Can we find it on playstore?
Lel.. The Futurama intro is a modified version fo the main theme of California games... woot!

It's funny how the PC at the time either offered the best experience or one so close to being good, it hurts.
I grew up.with the NES and Commodore 64 version of this game.
The NES game was.....fine I guess, but had I not already been in love woth the C64 version, I would likely never have sank my teeth into it.
C64 version was unmatched.
