How "RED" Changed Taylor Swift's Career

- Опубликовано: 26 окт 2020
- Today, we’re going to be talking about Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album, "RED", and how this record was the one to ultimately lay the groundwork for the record breaking 1989.
Many rightfully so, assume "1989" is where Taylor’s country career spun a 180, however, without "RED", the transition into "1989" likely would have been much more difficult.
"RED" is a record that interlaced a stronger influence of pop, began to shed Taylor Swift’s sweetheart image, and allowed her to showcase a version of herself that arguably, won’t be seen again.
Let me know in the comments, why you think RED was such a pivotal record in Taylor Swift’s career!

Red changed taylor swift from that girl with the nude colored lips and curly hair and who wears a lot of dresses and can write very well, to Shakespeare with red lips and hipster's clothes
LMAOOOO! Trueeeee
I can't agree more
Spill
The most accurate description ever
She wore red lipstick ever since Fearless, but yeah, this era really matured her😳
This album deserved a Grammy because of All Too Well alone.
Facts
Agreed
AOTY
She should’ve won her second album of the year instead of 1989, the 2014 Grammys where Taylor got nothing, draft punk won AOTY and Macklemore won best rap album over Kendrick Lamar was ... a interesting year
Once more, the Grammys proving they don't know what they're doing. I've given up on award shows and their validity 🤷♀️ Kinda only watch them for performances. I don't know, I feel winning awards doesn't have much weight anymore.
RED is not just an album, it is a lifestyle.
Period. She cliterally invented the perfect autumn aesthetic.
Before RED, we did not have autumn leaves, scarves, breakfast at midnight, four blue eyes, cafes or even the fall seasons....

I totally agree! It really just encapsulates SOOO much.

RED was literally the kickstarter to Taylor's approach into new heights. 1989 wouldn't even exist if Red never happened.
I 100% agree!
She said 1989 was inspired the night she lost RED’s AOTY grammy. I feel like if that didn’t happen, she wouldn’t have gone 100% pop the way she did.
@@daniellasalguero2578 Yup, the loss literally inspired her to go full on pop. But of course, she wouldn't even have the idea in mind if Red didn't contain some pop sounds.
I completely agree with you, everyone thinks reputation is about kaney west, like wtf? , is about finding love when you are in your worst moment! 🖤
Exactly! 😃
Yes of course Kayne played a role in inspiring the album but it’s about finding a way to validate yourself without the approval of others and find love through the lies
I hate that too! reputation is as much about Joe as Lover is.

RED is important because she broke out mainstream with that album and it’s mainly POP.
True 😳! I'll never forget people at my school getting into heated debates about if RED was country or pop 😭

I can't wait to hear Taylor talk about Red. The only issues about the creation of that album that were made public was how big machine didnt feel comfortable with her working with pop producers and basically said no more than x amount of pop songs for this album.
I'm very excited to see what we may learn as she begins to re-record her records soon! And that's interesting! It seemed to me the "pop" songs off the record were VERY pop in my opinion, which may have derived from that restriction?
I read the opposite, where the idea to bring in Max Martin and Shellback was was Borchetta's suggestion. This is a quote from an article: “I said, ‘You know, this song isn’t working yet.’ They both looked at me (Swift and Nathan Chapman) with a blank stare. The chorus isn’t elevating like it needs to. Where you’re wanting to take the song, it’s not going there. It needs a Max Martin type of lift.”… At that point Borchetta called Martin. Both Borchetta and Swift agree that it was a turning point for “Red”.
@@popdissected4400 yeah but all the pop songs still had a little bit of country in them

RED deserved all the Grammy's it was nomitaded for! Remember Taylor's face after singing 'All Too Well' and the *amazing* singles on this era
Justice was in fact not served 😩 !
The same year she lost all Grammy nominations for red was the same year Macklemore won best rap album and best new artist over Kendrick Lamar, Kanye west, drake, Kacey Musgraves and Ed Sheeran, that was a odd year at the Grammys
I was not a fan since the first álbum just because country music is not my type of music but i started listen to her with the álbum speak now. I like it and i heard more on the next álbums...Red is one of my favorites now. I really appreciate her lyrics, her talent as a songwriter is so special. We can relate to her music. Her music speaks directly to our hearts. She seems to be a very nice person and i respect her fabulous evolution as an artist. The success she have, she definitely deserves!
Reputation is my favorite álbum, i absolutely LOVE everything about that ERA, the songs, the style, the vídeos! I LOVE "angry"Taylor!
Now meanwhile she released two more álbums Lover that i call her sweet álbum and Folklore...the special and more real álbum she made till this day...Taylor is talented and an ICONIC artist, and i can't wait for the future! I'm definitely a fan now!

I'm trying my best :) But I totally get that. I love RED but I can't really listen to it for a prolonged amount of time. I listen to mainly the slower, more somber tracks and then I'm done 😳 Gotta blast rep now
I think that Red is a masterpiece album because it encompasses the whole spectrum, quite possibly better than any of her other albums. It's the album where she still has her country roots but is maturing and yeah I agree that 1989 is the pivotal record but Red was kind of the lead in/transition to the pop era Taylor Swift that we've seen in recent years. It'll be interesting to see how the folklore era goes with so many similarities to Red, as I call it, Red 2.0 lol
So true! I've seen many comparisons between "RED" and "folklore", so I'm excited to see down the road how the perception of "folklore" changes and how people regard it in the entirety of her discography.
Gosh, Red, the memories of Red when it first came out, it came out right when I started my freshmen year in high school and my love for Taylor was growing. I actually brought the CD at my local target and played it until the CS broke (literally lol). What I love about the album is the aesthetic building the bridge of country music, indie rock and pop music, as well as the coming of age lyrics that features regrets, loneliness, celebrating our youth, loss and self reflection, especially considering I was starting high school, having deep regrets what I did and didn’t do in middle school and starting a journey of who I was becoming as a teenager. Also the album packaging and promo started my love for hipster fashion (even doe I hate hipsters for their association with gentrification)

Wow! I just LOVE hearing everyone's stories about the first time they heard certain songs and the memories they have associated with them. Thank you for sharing!
In my opinion RED isn't a Country record or a Pop record. RED stayed in grey area between those genres and other sub genres that she mixed it for. And why it's still remain of her great record? Cause the unique production & the masterpiece lyrics are the reason. We all know Taylor always do this experimental stuff since the beginning of her career. Yeah it's very risky move but she did a great job with every single experiments. In the terms of quality, I still think RED is her best album. Cause in this record we got all the things we need in an Album. folklore probably her 2nd best Album ever, cause this album have the masterpiece lyrics that can compete with RED alongside with the uniqueness itself such as melancholy production, the melody etc. But the problem is the tempo of folklore is too melow and not everyone likes that. Well these two records are enough to describe what Taylor is. She has known as a really great songwriter and a story teller since the beginning.
Very nice point! I agree, even though "folklore" released months ago, I really JUST got into it. I couldn't for the longest time because it was very mellow, but now I'm starting to really appreciate it.
I agree RED is her best album. I think only evermore can compete with RED
ME HERE A SWIFTIE IMMEDIATELY CLICKS lol
😂 LMAO
Same.
When Red is released, I know it’s a preparation for Taylor’s next move. She explored different sounds on that album and slightly changed her image so the change to 1989 would not be so weird or drastic to alienate her fans. After all the albums she released, Red is still my fave one.
I totally agree! "RED" definitely prefaced and set a smoother transition to "1989", and it makes me wonder if this was the intention from the start.
Yes, I completely agree with everything you said. Red is super important to me bc it’s the first Taylor era I was a swiftie for, but I also think it was the first taste of what to come for Folklore. I think people who are listening to Taylor for the first time with Folklore would also love Red. I know it was criticized for lacking cohesion at the time, but I think it just has an incredible range tied together by strong, “red” emotions. It’ll always be my favorite album of Taylor’s.
I keep seeing the "folklore" comparisons popping up and it's not something I really thought about until now, but you're so right! "RED" very much, in a way, was a "folklore" 'lite" so to speak.
Red was definitely a genre in itself lol It encompassed not only country and pop. It had elements of dub, disco, rock, and indie. It literally could fit anywhere. It’s very much a gem to this date. She really shined as a performer during the tours of that era, as well. And that’s was the time she really started doing her features where she would bring guest artists and also the acoustic performances 🙂
You should really talk about Electra heart, or Marina in general, that would be interesting specially with the rise of alternative music nowadays
Great idea! 😊

I love you described the single vs album, which is a creative/business decision that boosts the interest in her as an artist (Which I know thanks to your analysis of reputation! :)))) )
Red is one of my favourites by Taylor (up there with Rep and folklore), and what puts it there is that, despite including elements of pop, it feels timeless to me. The music itself isn't wrapped up in trends, the story-telling is dream-worthy (as always with Tay), and the situations described are pretty much universal.

Her top 4 albums are RED, Speak Now, 1989, & folklore😌
For me, I'd have to say "RED", "reputation", "Lover" and "folklore" 😳
I love all the songs in this album except for the singles, “Begin again” and “all to well” are beautiful gems that deserve every once of love, “state of Grace” is an amazing intro, the tittle track is heartfelt and catchy, “everything has changed is a charming duet as Taylor swift and Ed switch vocals, “holy ground” and “stay stay stay” are underrated gems and “the lucky one is one of my personal favorites. I find the singles to be so annoying AF, like “I knew you were trouble” and “weEEEEE are never getting back together” I still hate them with every ounce of my being “22” is tolerable and cheeky. Overall this album is beautiful and amazing, I wished that all the tracks were mature tho.
I definitely love the album tracks more than the singles. I love "State of Grace". I think it's simply a stunning intro, and likely her best she's put out.
But I think that's the charm, it was weird sonically. Comparing to all of her albums RED just sounds so jumbled and confused and every song are distinct from one another.
Your videos never disappoint
Thank you so much! I appreciate it 🤗
I LOVED THIS VIDEO OMG you’re so good at making these
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
So true about the “false start” lead singles! I’ve always said that to friends who have been skeptical of listening to a full Taylor album based on some of her singles alone. Also to me Red is such a monumental album because it’s not only so transitional from a genre perspective but a personal/songwriting perspective which I think you touched on a bit. The songwriting on this album is some of the best and most confessional of her career and definitely showcased her maturity. As for the pop or country question, I don’t think this should be categorised as a country record and I do think it leans more towards pop (especially with WANEGBT, IKYWT, and 22) but I also think she really embraced an indie sound and aesthetic for this album which helped the whole indie/hipster look go mainstream (ironically, and for better or for worse) at the time. Pitchfork called Sad Beautiful Tragic “Taylor on the verge of signing to 4AD”. I could talk about this masterpiece for hours ❤️ thanks for the video!

RED walked, so 1989 and folklore could soar
😂 facts!!
No way. Folklore is way more superior than Red. Arrangements on Red sometimes don't suit lyrics, like The Lucky One and Holy Ground. Folklore has better lyrics and no problems with sound.
RED was the first era i follow from the beginning to end, i discover her with "You belong with me" loved her and remain with "Speak Now", there was something magical about her realeasing promo single track, each songs were different to the previous one (at the time, if i remember correctly, she released "State of grace, RED and I Knew You Were Trouble" as promo track) and wow, the first time i heard IKYWT i was in shock i never expected from her to implement dubstep sound in her music! All Too Well was my jam, the part when she said "And it smells like me" always got me in some way, she sang it with such pain and melancholy in her voice, the imagery in her booklet are very good too! Honestly i feel that her voice it suits better with those kinda of instruments even if i still think that with 1989 e other albums after that she improve a lot lyrically, and Folklore is the proof of that. I get the correlation between Folklore and RED, the first is like winter and the second one is like autumn, they complement each other so well! I honestly can't wait to see what she has in mind with her next project cause it will certainly be different.
Yess!!! So beautifully put 💕
