Lime Green Grass // What's WRONG with my LAWN?! | Uneven Coloring in Lawn
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 май 2020
- Today I talk about what's wrong with my lawn and what I plan on doing to help fix it. I'm noticing uneven color throughout my lawn, even after fertilizing. Let's dive into why you may be experiencing dark and light green grass throughout your lawn and what you may need to do to fix it. This is the first time I have ever dealt with thatch issues or a build up of dead material in the lawn.

Even though you said you weren’t ... I just hear common complaining. J/k glad to see another video from you buddy
Thanks man! Cheers! Stay safe going back to work.
Glad to see you at it again!
It feels good to be back.
I would suggest mechanically or manually dethatching ASAP. Removing the dead material and thatch will allow better airflow to the top layer of the soil which will help reduce the potential for disease and fungus. Then I would hit it with some iron weekly.
Great Vid Ben! You are spot on for sure! I had the same issue last fall. So this year Early spring I did a power rack de-thatch to remove a lot of that lawn litter! We've had some cold temps since that power rake (Snowed yesterday 5/9 crazy) so my lawn is definitely slow to recover but I know it will once temps come up. I am going to run the same plan with GCF De-Thatch once I can get temps in 80's to get it to digest some of what is remaining. This is a very important topic and a lot of people miss this, usually comes from improper mowing/mulching or dead POA from years past. Thanks for sharing, great to see you back my friend! Peace Chad Upstate NY
Yeah I'm thinking part of this problem may be from not mowing frequent enough in years past. As always, thanks for the support and comments, Chad! Good luck this season!
Great video Ben . I am sort of having the same issues in my lawn and I’m happy that you showed this video. Think I might have to take a look at the dethatch product.
Thanks, man! The liquid dethatch won't get rid of all of this material but it will help break down some of the dead material before this fall when I mechanically dethatch.
Interesting... now I wanna go out and walk around my lawn and look at the spots I have that are very similar. Great info Ben, thanks. 👍🏻
Thank you! I think it's important to walk the lawn and make notes about things your noticing. Have fun exploring in your lawn!
Glad to see you back and talking about this. I have this issue too. I ruled out thatch because I I aggressively dethatch last fall. I can say that that was the single best thing I have done for my lawn. I also ruled out poa t, even that I have more than some.
I think it's and old school lawn over seeded with cheap seed.
I'll be renovation sometime in the not to distant future, I hope. For now just polishing the turd.
Yeah my previous lawn was cheap seed that I used but I was still able to get pretty even coloring. This could have to do with grass quality and soil quality. That's why this year I'm focusing on putting micros and bio-stimulants down and just learning how to care for a lawn this size. Thanks for commenting and watching regularly.
@@TheLawnGuardian Happy mother's day to Mrs. Guardian!!! I'm doing the same thing here. Cant wait to see your progress and use your experiences on my lawn.👍🏽
I'd say PH and compaction are the likely culprit. I'm currently dealing with that now and hoping that it will address the thatch build up.
Glad to see ya back. I really don’t think if you used a SunJoe that it would stress the yard too much this time of year. But, I understand the concern. Enjoy the season brother.
Yeah you're probably right. It's more of a time commitment thing at the moment. lol. Who knew that 3 kids would so time consuming. lol! You enjoy the season as well!
I have the same problem going on this year. Lots of dead material that I thought was just dormant grass but it never went away. I am going to have to wait to dethatch until much later I just did some patch seeding and don’t want to tear up the baby grass. And what’s weird is that a few portions of the new kbg I seeded last August is really stunted yet. I.e. it’s so short yet even at 1” the mower blades haven’t been able to cut it yet. It’s green and the color looks nice but it’s just not growing. It’s so weird. Definitely have some more work to do this spring and early summer yet lol. The fun part is that it’s always a work in progress. Your lawn is looking pretty good so far though! We’ve had a very dry spring so far and I feel like everything has been slow this year so far.
It's been a pretty cool spring here so it's been hard to tell if this new lawn is not jumping due to the weather or because of other reasons since it's a new lawn.
I'll be d thatch for the first time this summer. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works.
Thanks man! Good luck!
I enjoy your videos Ben. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Seems to be a common theme here too. I want to say my deep green green-up is late because we’ve had maybe two days 70+ this spring. Grass is growing slow for this time of year.
Yeah, I haven't noticed a huge flush a growth here. I need to just watch how things go this year to get a better idea of how this lawn is doing and what it needs.
Mine is splotchy this year too. I have no thatch build up at all though. I think it is just because it is a weird cool spring.
For sure, Jason. It has been a more up and down spring than I'm use to.
I am having the same type issue. Mostly just in the front yard. Sort of lime green color. Mine isn’t thatch as I heavily power raked the yard in the fall for overseed. I’m going to try some micros and iron next and see what it does.
I definitely don't think the dead material is the only reason for me because I've noticed improvements with I apply micros and humic acid. Good luck with your lawn!
I have some dark green spots in my backyard but I also painted those spots black with Humic 12.
That's a really good idea!
Nice work mate good vid 🤘
Thank you! 👍Cheers!
The DeThatch works be in hot weather. Like 85 to 95 degrees. June, July, August. The microbes thrive in the heat. I would not mechanically dethatch this year, but consider aerating and oversees in the fall. Good luck.
Yeah that's why I'm waiting for it to warm up before I begin to regularly apply it. Thanks for the tips and for the support! You have a good season in your lawn!
Mine was pretty evenly colored for a few weeks after fert but is getting blotchy again now. I think it is due to nutrients getting tied up in my high clay soil. They are there for a while but eventually get bonded to the soil particles and aren't available anymore. We were short of rain so it didn't run off.
Clay is actually a very good soil to have because it can hold moisture and nutrients well. Using humic acids can help make nutrients available to the plant that may be unavailable. Our soil is clay here as well. Thank you for watching!
The Lawn Guardian?. Packs like concrete and stays too wet. Have yellow clay up north here. Not good stuff at all.
Welcome back I mechanically aerate twice a year never dethatch wondering if that helps prevent Thatch build up
It will be interesting to see how things progress throughout this year! Thanks for watching!
Maybe you can answer this. My fescue turned EXTREMELY green during a hard freeze. Would you know why. It's not dead or anything. THANKS!!
Wonder if it’s also a mix of different grass types responding differently? Planning to aerate and overseed when you dethatch later this year?
It definitely could be. I'm not currently planning on mechanically aerating or overseeding as the lawn is very thick but we'll see how the lawn does this year. It may end up needing the seed. I'm using Air8 all year long so I won't need to mechanically aerate. Thank you for watching!
I inherited a 45 year old lawn and it contains many different kinds of grasses. I find that once things start growing and I've started a regular mowing schedule and I get an app of fert down in mid to late spring, things start evening out. That said, it might not be a bad idea to dethatch in the fall just to clean things up, but I don't think dethatching is necessary as some people claim it to be. I would say it helps for seeding but I wouldn't do it every year, maybe every 3-5 years. I think the only way to cure the uneven color in the spring is to do a complete overhaul, meaning kill it all off and start with fresh seed or sod. I'm not bothered by it enough to undertake that kind of project though.
Yeah I'll see how things go in the lawn this year before I decide to do any sort of large renovations but I'm with you. I'm not sure I'll be overly bothered by it to undertake some large renovation project. Thanks for watching!
I think your assessment is right on ,Ben but I also think it could be a little bit of an iron deficiency...maybe
That's a little bit of it, but my soil test didn't show to low of iron. I'll be applying plenty of it through my fertilizer apps this year to keep a nice deep green in the lawn.
I have some splotching in a bare dirt total renovation TTTF last fall, inconsistent blade thickness and growth patterns. I'm wondering that despite all our efforts to spread a granular fert fertilizer evenly, it still ends up being uneven. Maybe after several applications it will even out. I'm thinking about trying out the 18 0 1 green punch liquid, my P and K are sufficient, I'll need more N soon.
Yeah, I'm not sure. I've used granular all at my previous house and didn't have this issue. I'm thinking my issue may be grass and soil quality. You may be dealing with this due to it being young as well as possible soil deficiencies or problems.
2 years later but I’m having this issue now and am wondering if the issue was resolved with your process?
It blended together a bit better. It cleared up a bit with consistent and even fert apps. Also there are different blends of tall fescue and kentucky blue grass mixed in that contribute to this to a degree as well. Thank you for watching!
I killed my front lawn off last season and seeded with 3 sod grade KBG varieties Midnight, Blue Note & Bewitched and some of it this year is coming back lime green. Not sure if it's just not warm enough yet or because it hasn't had a full season of growth yet. I had an infestation of wild creeping bent that turned brown and I still had to rake it with a thatch rake and spray the lawn again anyway the lawn was completely dead and I have a few spots that are lime green areas that the seed collected from rain super thick so Maybe I need to poke some holes in those spots?
Man it sounds like you've had it pretty rough. The holes might help.
I’m noticing a similar issue with my Midnight KGB I planted last fall in the back yard. The fescue that I killed off was like a lime green popsicle. I tilled in a ton of Black Kow to amend the heavy clay and while the grass is generally looking great, it’s starting to show some lime green again. I am waiting on soil test results but the turf is too new for thatch and debris issues so I am guessing either soil or something in my well water. 🤷🏼♂️. Frustrating to say the least.
@@CaseyBieker since I posted that comment I did some research. Midnight takes a couple seasons to get dark the Blue Note and Bewitched make up for it as they are super duper dark green and holy moly is the turf THICK I doubt I will have to spray the few broad leaf weeds as the turf is smothering them. All 3 cultivars are EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE and spreading like mad they are the new cool season ALPHA grass
Big Ben!😎👊
I have the same problem and i couldn't figure it out and i know i have dead material problems so ill do thr same thing in the fall cuz im over seeding fall to after aeration
Good luck with this project and your lawn this year!
Thanks you also
Similar experience, bought the house, decent yard, used dethatch,... good not great... then glyphosate, Harley rake, grade, and seed. Now looking to overseed. Sissy grass
Good luck with the sissy grass! It's some beautiful grass. Thanks for the support!
The Lawn Guardian, anxious to see your journey esp without the mountain in the back. 🤣
I’m having trouble finding the Ewing Eagle/Ace I used last year and wanted to keep similar cultivars. I’m being a snob. If I can’t locate any I will prob nuke it and just use KBG. I chose PRG over KBG last year to quick germ as we had a party at the house. And also wanted to try something different.
Im sloshed on the word splotchy 🍺🍺🍺🍺
hahaha! Glad it was a good time for you while watching this one!
The Lawn Guardian 🤣🤣🤣
Got a question can you seed on top of sod? I`m in Wentzville by the way.
You can throw a little seed over sod but keep it very light. You want to try to encourage that sod to get thicker by itself. Nice, where in Wentzville are you?
@@TheLawnGuardian I'm in stonemoor by rotary park
@@aaronlittlejohn8493 Right on! You're right down the road.
@@TheLawnGuardian maybe u can come by and check it out and suggest some things to me.
Do you think the lawn was regularly treated for POA Annua?
I don't know for sure. I'm going to assume yes since I haven't noticed much at all.
You’re either developing a fungus or recovering from fungus. If recovering from fungus then it will eventually grow into an even hue.
I think someone has possibly reseeded it with a different type of seed like a rye grass. Just a guess.
That's possible, although my previous lawn was cheap seed that I used but I was still able to get pretty even coloring. This problem could have to do with grass quality and soil quality. That's why this year I'm focusing on putting micros and bio-stimulants down and watching how things go this year to get a better idea of how this lawn is doing and what it needs in the future. Thanks for commenting and watching!.
I have the same problem this year. Took a soil test. Ph is 6.8 sulfur is .87 that's the problem
Yeah I have high pH that I am currently working on. In my latest video I talk about the improvements I had with my pH between last year and this year. Thanks for watching!
Stay at home dad? Must be nice especially when the kids are in school.
Splotchy 🤣🌱
SunJoe is cheap and effective. About the same price as to renting power rake. Own instead of rent.
I bought a greenworks and glad I did. Definitely work the investment. Thanks for watching!
Who knew the fugas would kill ur lawn months later lol
I had a feeling something like this might happen.
Throw down the Sun Joe dethatcher and hope for the best!
I'll be doing that very soon actually.
I moved into a new place last year myself and had a HUGE thatch problem. Sun Joe got it all out of there, but be prepared....you're gonna need a bigger trash can. I took over 20 45 gal trash bags of thatch out of 2500 sq ft. Mine was REALLY bad though.
Thank you for the tip! 👍
You've one path, monostand of Muh'Zama.
Koven Carlson yep I agree, burn it all down start over.
Maybe some day. I need to learn this lawn before I undertake something like that. I'm not sure I can dive into the time commitment with reel mowing. At some point I'm thinking of using Pete's tttf & blue grass mix.
What does the lawn ginja say lol
I've watch his video on this exact issue. He makes great points. I've actually noticed how the bio-stimulants have helped with this to some degree.
@@TheLawnGuardian those videos are helpful for real
Geez, too chatty before getting to the point!
Good grief, get to the topic.
