I remember playing Gta IV, and I got to the mission where the main character goes to Algonquin (Manhattan NYC) and turning on the radio and listening to this as I crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. It was so surreal and the song was so perfect that I thought it was a part of the original soundtrack. What a coincidence
I discovered this the old-school way. I walked into a second-hand vinyl shop back in 1997 and heard a piece of music that literally stopped me in my tracks. It was like a mixture between John Barry, Coltrane (Song of the Underground Railroad) and the best hip hop. This was then followed by Mystic Brew by Ronnie Foster, and Tropicola by Stringtronics. The shop assistant had been blasting out Mighty Mellow Vol. 1. Suffice to say, I bought the album right there and then, and the majestic Holy Thursday remains a favourite to this day.
That is the BEST way to discover music - and I'll take those others as suggestions. We have a love for this in common, you mayve introduced me to my next favorites - Thank You. 🖤
Makes me wish I wasn't born in 1990 so I could have experienced this, but I'll take my discovery from GTA IV as a good way to find this later in life and still enjoy it just as much.
0:00 Lil Wayne - Dr. Carter 1:49 The Beatnuts - Hit Me With That & Joey Bada$$ - Righteous Minds 2:43 Pete Rock and InI - Think Twice 2:15 Deda and Pete Rock - Nasty Scene I’m definitely going to add more but this just shows how many classic hip hop songs have sampled this masterpiece
the "think twice" moment from InI is always giving me goosebumps even 25 years later it's one of these too rare and too short moments of absolute perfection. Not surprising Pete Rock used it. Axelrod is a like a muse to him
15 years ago my life was consumed by record collecting and reading Wax Poetic journal like it was my bible. it’s awesome to see a new generation get turned on to Axelrod by a video game.
This one my favourite instrumental recordings ever. It's so of it's time it's awesome. It's amazingly well arranged. Powerful and sensitive and passionate. That whole album is a masterpiece. Axelrod FTW. Luv and Peace.
Yep, if you play them back-to-back, it has almost the same drum pattern, bass, structure and orchestration. I'm glad they did show this awesome tune some respect by including it in GTAIV
Damn I just found out about this man today & very sad to hear he passed away. This is a masterpiece. So many producers used this song for samples like pete rock & buckwild.i must find more of his work if it's as great as this song is. R.I.P. David Axelrod
Prince never collabo with other artists because he said he doesnt sample but play original music. I respected him for that and i will forever do but if it wasnt for Hip Hop for me, i will have never known about David Axelrod, Nina Simone amongst others...can you image someone from Africa loving all this, God bless
Christian charles Wayne did his thing for sure- but Fat Joe murdered this beat back in '95! Check out "Bronx Keeps Creating It", you won't be disappointed
En résumé de mon précédent post et en anglais: a great unknown composer producer, beautiful "easy listening" style with long string sequences with hippies and exotic sound of the famous creative year 68'. Thanks for sharing! Marc, ex classical music adviser at fnac store 1989-2007, Paris, France ...
Just to set it straight.. First ones to do it: Beatnuts w. "Hit Me With That". The Beatnuts were the first to dig up and utilize Axelrod, bunch of NY-cats followed suit short after. But, uhm, sampling is fun and all, but who really cares when this shit stands as solid as it does. I find myself vibing out to this, once again :)
Mathias And in 1995 pete rock with think twice . He actually sampled tons of axelrod's magical few seconds. From 2:42 ......these 10 seconds are absolute pure and perfect perfection

Deffo in my top 5 too. The atmosphere is everything.
That opening is majestic- a grand Christmas Sunset in Manhattan.
Sublime. This is a completely perfect composition. Words do not have descriptors for its majesty. Flooring. Beautiful.
Majestic.
This song will forever play in my head.

I love how it was sampled. Not much added to it, very 80ish style hip-hop beat which I love about it. It such an underrated Lil Wayne song.
Thank you LGA2DFW, I had forgotten about this one! Takes me back, Fat Joe had some great tracks back then.
