In some interviews, Richard Ashcroft says he discovered his voice when he was chosen to sing lord prayer at school. Imagine the lucky schoolmates who saw his first live performances!
Great contrast between Ashcroft as the free-spirit style musician and the classic/formal orchestral setting. Exceptional stuff - anyone who likes music can appreciate the Axelrod/Electric Prunes greatness here.
oof i was living in London then but didnt know this was on. wonderful stuff! a rare example of a version perhaps slightly better than even the excellent original.
R.I.P. David Axelrod, who helped us hear the world in a different way.

Listening to Verve bootlegs from 1993, they always have this song playing right as they're getting on stage. Awesome piece of music
at the very beginning, it sounds like Axelrod says “am I the only person that knows this tune??”
Ashcroft can only laugh!
two legends XX
This collaboration was intensely personal to both Richard and David. The Verve played Holy Are You as their intro music to every live gig they did. ❤️
Wow!
Props to the bass player on this set. Keep in mind he's playing on upright bass and keeping a tight groove with no deviation in his intonation. Wow...
I caught that too. Though there was an electric bass player as well, no?
RIP David... you changed my life, forever grateful...
I too was at this gig and it was truly epic. Axelrod was my Bowie! Your music will live on sir.
Praise be Barry!
I was at this gig it was awesome.
i'm jealous as fuck
I love when musical lines are blurred and from within the shadow emerges greatness

Well, he was once a free-spirit style musician. Not so much these days.

Amazing performance but Carol Kaye had the better bass line. 🤷♂️
I don't think it's about Jesus. It's more pantheistic or anthropotheistic, in my view.
is there an instrumental for this? idk why i but the vocals are fucking annoying.
