Polarity does matter when wiring the lamp socket. The threaded portion of the socket should be negative or neutral so that when the bulb is out of the socket with the switch on you won’t get shocked if you accidentally touch the threads.

Just a tip I wanted to share,if galvanized fittings are too expensive for your project budget,you can buy a galvanizing spray paint and achieve the same appearance for cheaper

Wire the neutral wire to the silver terminal that goes to the shell of the light socket so that there is no risk of electrical shock when changing a light bulb. 120 volt devices should have a 3 prong plug and ground all metal non current carrying metal parts,

A flood light socket would thread into the top and be nicer looking and DEFINITELY much safer
