I'm honestly glad Roy became a top tier in Ultimate. In Melee he was a character with so much potential, so to see that potential realized in Ultimate makes me very happy.
Roy went from a bottom tier in melee to a top tier in ultimate
And a low tier in sm4sh, but that games not real
@@shaan__real exactly
Started from the bottom now he here
Tbf my friend mains Roy as his swordsman and I’m not saying he’s bad but I don’t think he’s A or S tier I think he’s pretty mid most games I don’t think he’s high tier in ult I still think he’s a character u can feel like u got a honest win with and outta all the fire emblem characters he’s my fave to fight
@@twotamatos Hard disagree. Roy is definitely top 10 at least. Insane aerials, good mobility and movement, One of the best jabs in the entire game, amazing down tilt, good punish game. Even his recovery isn't that bad as you many would be led to believe. Dude gets comboed kinda hard and his hitboxes are a bit tricky but thats his only real downsides.
Ironically he's a killing machine more than Marth nowadays, hope you're proud Lyn!!
I'm pretty sure in Ult, Marth kills earlier with his smash attacks and side b assuming you hit the sweetspot. Though Roy has an easier time killing due to his sweetspots being easier to hit, so I guess it's a moot point.
@@drakejoshofficialyoutubech5569 no, the sweet spot of roy is stronger than the tipper of marth. for exemple, the side b of roy is stronger than limit cross slash of cloud
@@Holy-Tiramisu What? How does Roy side b being stronger than limit cross slash have anything to do with how strong Roy side b is compared to Marth side b?
@@drakejoshofficialyoutubech5569 well that's meant to show how much stupidly strong roy sweet spot is. marth side b is way less strong. for the others moves, most of the time roy is stronger, but not always (his forward smash tipper is stronger if i remember well). that's logique : compare lucina and chrom, who are clones of marth and roy : chrom is stronger than lucina
@@Holy-Tiramisu I just tested it in Training Mode and found that Marth side b is in fact stronger. For the test I used Mario as the character getting hit and Final Destination as the stage. Also I didn't have Mario move from his spawn location and I had both Roy and Marth at zero percent so rage wasn't a factor. Lastly, I had Mario set to stop because I didn't want DI or anything to interfere with the results. With all that in mind, the results were Roy killing Mario off the side at 80% at the lowest while Marth started killing at 71%.
I’m a Marth main that enjoys switching to Roy from time to time to prove I’m better than my opponent. It’s also worth mentioning that I refuse to think Roy is as bad as we think.
Fun fact, Roy is one of the two characters that I have defeated Giga Bowser with. The other being Marth.
Noone asked
@@toxicgoofy4814 Sorry, it’s just that Giga Bowser is very difficult to beat.
@@toxicgoofy4814 I ASKED, FOOL!
@@toxicgoofy4814 And no one asked you to say anything either yet that didn't stop you. Funny how that works.
@@jameslisterthemarthplayer8322 I've only beat it with Jiggypuff 😅😂😂
I’ve played Roy since melee when he sucked, it makes me SO happy he’s finally good in ultimate. He’s earned it. And he better be in the next game, whenever that is
Working on a Roy Video right now, I talk about this exact thing LOL
glad roy's grown up lots in smash history from beginning to now.
ROY'S OUR BOY
I lost to my friend who was playing roy… but I was also playing roy
As a Roy main in Melee, he's actually a lot more fun to play as. He can almost do combos that Marth can perform, but Roy has to do more work. Although his aerials are terrible, they can be used as combo starts as long as the opponent doesn't crouch cancel them. Sour spot D-Air sends the opponent upwards that can lead to Up Air juggles or grabs on some characters. Roy can also Ken Combo, but it's nearly impossible to land and his D-Air is a Meteor instead of a Spike. Most importantly, his fire based attacks deal equal damage and knock back, no matter which part of the sword is hit.
In Ultimate, Roy could've had unique animations to differentiate him more away from Marth such as keeping his Forward Throw and Double-Edge Dance the same as in Melee since Marth's Shield Breaker and Dancing Blade were changed in Brawl and having a different Forward Throw in Ultimate.
I will never understand why falco and marth's down air are the only true spikes in the game and their players/wankers defending it like meteor smashes being useless in that game. Thank god smash 4 made them powerful because they're already hard to hit
As a roy main, people always tell me to play marth, roy is nothing like marth.
If anything, roy is more like Sheik if anything.
No im not switching, im staying roy, he is our boy.
Roy has always been one of my favorite Smash fighters! So glad to see he’s getting the recognition (and buffs) he deserves!
Roy is also my favorite smash fighter
roy went from a golden soi boi to a legend in ultimate fighting against Steve and honest is here to inform that really loved the vid and hope too see you in stream.
Roy was my favorite Melee character as a kid, breaks my heart how poorly designed he is.
PM Roy, by fixing him while still keeping him in the “melee-ish” version (something about S4/Ult Roy doesn’t feel the same) is actually one of my favorite Smash characters ever.
Love the editing in this video holy shit man keep up the great work!
Thank you!
the bersona music in the beginning goes hard
I have good tastes
This is pretty honest if u ask me
I think I'll agree
your videos have been really good lately wow
"pitfalls" someone actually plays FE, lets go
Hot take but even in FE6 Roy is not that good. And I've played the game twice.
@@ZachHonest nah not a hot take, last chapter promotion is ass. his dad isnt much better either in 7 but certainly better.
@@ZachHonest That's not a hot take. It's a very cold one.
@@ZachHonestnot really hot take he is like the second weakest lord in the series
All he really needs in Melee is better hitboxes (mostly his aerials), that alone would probably make him high mid tier close to Samus. His recovery is bad but workable for a game like Melee where most recoveries are limited, a higher double-jump would help a lot on that front as well.
One thing Roy did that was funny as hell in Sm4sh was his jab. If you managed to run someone into the corner and they blocked, you could spam jab until their shield broke(this was nigh impossibleto escape). That paired with his instakill N-Special made any unsuspecting player regret their life decisions.
Roy down smash would honestly be outright better than Marth’s if not for the horrendous endlag.
It’s frame 6 (slower startup but by itself is still decently fast for a smash attack), it’s much easier to get the sweetspots (he even has one on his head), the sweetspots kill reasonably well and the tipper actually can both kill and send offstage at a favorable angle.
Marth’s is faster and less punishable sure but it’s harder to get the tipper hitbox and he has so many better moves that he could use instead anyways.
I play Roy in Slippi and in bracket and it’s been my secret weapon lol
I love gold Roy from melee.I have yet to see a mod to recreate the model perfectly with his young face
I always liked Roy more. maybe it was because teenage me also really liked KH2 Sora, and Roy's design is kind of reminiscent of that. but looking at this video, his idle animations, his voice design, and his fire elemental just really stand out more as a cool design to me. it just sucks it wasn't done too well back then. playing Ultimate now, I think I kind of like Roy's design and silhouette more from back then; that younger, edgier hard-hitter. Roy's Ultimate design, while intricate, is a little over designed.
I like this video, it's a little love letter for my boy
In Brawl Minus, he became heavily decloned fighter.
funnily enough, there's a lot of similarities between Roy in Melee and Roy in his own game (Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade)
-both are considered garbage characters by players
-they lack range: Roy's sweet spot on the base of his sword in Melee, and swords only being able to attack adjacent enemies in Fire Emblem (except the Light Brand and the Binding Blade but those aren't available until late in the game)
-like he said in the video, Roy has an "identity crisis" of sorts: he's a worse Marth in Melee, and in FE he's horribly outclassed by nearly other infantry or sword unit, namely Rutger who is fast as fuck and has way better starting stats
-they have niche advantages: Roy has 3 OHKO moves in Melee (extremely situational tho), higher knockback with his neutral special than marth (also an easier time KOing), side special can block projectiles, etc.; in FE, he grants +Atk and +Crit buffs to several other useful characters via supports (namely Marcus, Shanna, Alan, and Cecilia), has exclusive access to the aforementioned Binding Blade which is one of the best weapons in the game (only for like 3 chapters tho smh), and is helpful early in the game before your other units inevitably outclass him
-their hotheadedness: surprisingly, that aspect of him is portrayed excellently in the story and character interactions in FE. He naively rushes into scenarios because he believes helping whoever's in trouble is the right thing to do despite warnings from others, and it works sometimes, but other times he gets his ass kicked. He learns from these though, and while he still rushes in, he knows how to do it more strategically and becomes a better leader as a result, which kinda lines up with his Ultimate appearance
When it comes to smash its like Roy went through an entire character arc. Bro even got older. (I refuse to believe Roy in Smash 4/ Ultimate is a 15 year old especially since he was shorter in melee.)
I still love looking at the face of Kurv when Zain whooped him in front of a crowd with Roy.
Still funny how in Melee he has 4 ko moves
1. Neutral B obviously
2. Neutral B Shield Break. On jigglypuff
3. Up b reverse on jigglypuff on some stages
4. And finally if a mr game and watch absorbs 3 pk flashes, releases it, and then if you counter it you literally release the strongest move in the game. Which if everyone is giant, it literally crashes the game
What about the three-Roy counter setup?
@@rosheafan?
@@susiehaltmann3342 You can have 3 roys counter into eachother forever, which creates an infinitely stronger attack until the game crashes.
Roy being bad in Smash Bros Melee is pretty accurate to how bad he is in FE6
Also him being a "Marth Clone" in both games is kinda ironic.
I’ve mained Roy since I first saw him in Melee, and I have sticked with him for all smash games. And Roy being a top tier in ultimate is amazing.
so who did you main in brawl lmao
@@jordycg5818what I did was just main Ike, since he was the more aggressive roy
I will ask this right now...
WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHY did it take Roy until Smash Ultimate to become Top Tier?
He was a low/bottom tier in Melee, a lower mid tier in Smash 4, a mid tier in Project M and the Legacy Brawl mod, and the tier he gets put in in his own series...
The fact that EVEN in Smash fan games... he STILL ranks so low...
What in gods green earth that Smash Ultimate do to him that FINALLY made him a Top Tier?
Is Roy really that bad? I just spam cannon balls and mechakoopas
People seem to exaggerate it a lot. He's got his advantages and you just have to use them.
If Zain can take roy and beat a player like ginger, I think its time to reevalute roys placement on the tier list.
You can't even argue its "The player being good not the character" because people said the same thing about pikachu and axe. People argued that pikachu wasn't viable because axe was just simply good.
To quote asumsaus not so verbatim: "What makes a character good isnt the person playing them. Its what tools and options the character has available which makes them good. Its then left to whether or not the player can utilize those tools to be successful."
I don't know if the title is supposed to be a mekkah reference or not but it's very funny either way
Roy's main problem in melee is he's not nearly fast enough to justify his scrappy aggressive play, as well he just does not have nearly the damage output necessary to justify it. Ultimate solved both of these and he's top 10 in the game because of it.
I just wish he didn't feel like shit to play in Ultimate. Melee Roy main, Roy is one of my worst characters in Ultimate.
0:46 wait what Hbox has a pocket roy??
Persona 3 music very based choice.
Why was Roy bad in Wii U while marth and female Marth where top twenty at worse?
-Is the title a mekkah reference?-
Honest to the Content
Does Roy have a good matchup againist jigglypuff?
I think Roy still has potential in melee, Pikachu, yoshi. And now dk were all bottom tier before people played them enough to figuer it oht
Roys our boy! Roys our boy!! 🗣️
ik you're just making a point with those clips of Roy failing to recover, but he could recover in all those situations... Bad up b timing
If you want a good Roy, play Ultimate or P+.
roy is not bad at all, and i can play with him good
Only real ones watched the beginning of the video on stream
Hey what emulator are you using for your footage? I suggest you use the ishiiruka branch of Dolphin since it's optimised for Melee (it's the one Slippi uses). It might make your footage less laggy.
I think its laggy because I have high graphical settings on within dolphin and also its recording at the same time. I've tried using "faster melee" build but it doesn't allow me to use Gameshark codes which is required for some of the footage. Is there a ishiiruka build thats good?
@@ZachHonest Maybe the version of dolphin that's coming to steam will be more optimized, not that Dolphin already isn't but considering how long we'll be waiting for steam Dolphin, I am pretty sure this is the long awaited 6.0
At least he is a top tier in ultimate
nice
Hello🙃
yall just bad with roy 😞
roy’s downsmash is better‼️then marths
This is a pretty bad video in terms of its information.
The core issue with Roy is his tilts and aerials (other than dtilt) have so little damage and knock back that they are negative on hit and practically useless
Fix them then the character is fine
Incorrect comment, Roy is not viable for a reason. If you want to look at a correct version of Roy look at PM Roy. Saying "his tilts and aerials are only bad with him" prove the point of the video. Because those faults stack up. I find it ironic you ignored his terrible recovery too. Saying "he isn't that bad" ignores the fact he is not played at all in compititve play for many reasons. If it was "only his tilts" then more people would play him LOL
pretty bad comment tbh, in terms of info.
Damn you stole asumsaus's whole editing style n vibe, weird af
In all of Smash, Roy has to be one of my favorite Cinderella stories. I was so glad when he returned in Smash4, but to see him as a Top Tier in Ultimate brings a tear to my eye. 🥲
nice to see my main get a little love :)
