Northern lights could appear across Canada as "severe" geomagnetic storm nears

- The most severe geomagnetic storm of the past 20 years is expected to hit Earth on Friday night, which could impact power grid systems, navigation and radio and satellite communication.
But the upside to this rare event is that Canadians across the country may be able to see a spectacular display of aurora borealis.
The U.S.'s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which tracks space weather events, is anticipating that northern lights could be seen as far south as northern California and Alabama. The geomagnetic storm may last throughout the weekend.
Global's Ross Hull reports on this phenomenal event.

Another cloudy day during a cool event in the sky. What a shame.
Haha funny! It's actually not cool anymore bc scientists found that earths magnetic field is reversing that could cause it to disappear for a couple days or months
Aurora Borealis?! At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country?!
Steamed Hams! Lol
May I see it?
Well done :)

You must live where I live - lol. Always big, chunky clouds in the way when there’s something to see in the sky.
"jet". stream?
They were so beautiful, pinks, purples and the usual neon green were part of the main show right above my house and all around! It was approximately 12:30AM I’ve never seen so many vehicles in my rural area. What a Gorgeous Mother’s Day gift! No need for more.❤

Yes
Can I see it?
Heyyy it’s the guy from student bodies! Anyone else remember that show as a kid? 😆
He was also one the members of the Midnight Society on "Are You Afraid of the Dark?".
Pretty sure....
@@BrowsingTheRestrictedSection Yes
He sounds like a young Trudeau.
@@BrowsingTheRestrictedSectionoh yeah, you’re right! Another great show I forgot about.
Buy a Tesla they said.. it’ll all be okay😂
Looking forward to this!!
Haven't seen the northern lights since Manitoba in the '80's.
Same
No one has caught on yet, but soon it won't be something we will be able to hide much longer.
Northern lights being seen below the 49th parallel was an event seen once every 20 years or so. Last year it happened 6 times.
The news is trying to sell it as normal now.
And it's not to do with the sun getting more out of hand.
Solar cycles have been getting weaker since the 80's.
Our Magnetosphere is rapidly getting weaker because of the ongoing magnetic excursion.
You have about 10 to 20 years left where you can enjoy electricity.
We have beautiful displays quite often still here in Manitoba.
It used to be a rare event.
Would happen once every 20 years.
Last year it happened 6 times.
I watch them regularly in Saskatchewan, they are beautiful. Multiple times per year every year. Where are you getting your information about once in twenty years?
Been a long time since I had a mass ejection.
Electrifying. Thanks for the heads up.
Localized in Seymour's kitchen.
love seeing helluva boss fans in news videos.
Ross Hull! Lookin' good dude, loved your early work. Cool to see you still in front of the camera
Stop provoking the King 🙃🙂
Saw them here in Vancouver around 11pm. It was life-changing
Don't worry, you'll all see it, there are actually now 6, full Halo, CME's on their way and one has just hit us already. This is just the beginning, it'll be a sporty weekend, hope you took out cash. This isn't going to end on Saturday, it takes up to and about 3 days travel time from the sun for the bulk to hit us, as I'm watching NOAA all night, we've had at least two more CMEs, full Halo, on their way. So, this, as I said, is just beginning, our grids are going to continue to take hits for at least the next three days.
I'm ready for the light show 😊
Where are you posting from? Are you more reliable than Global, who are pathological, serial liars? I just don't know what to believe.
I think the grid will be OK. Not like 2005.
Starlink cube sats on the other hand probably all doomed.

I wish I was able to explain why the magnetosphere is weakening.
But RUclips keeps blocking the data.
Indicate with 1 thumbs if you can read this.
I read that about every 10,000 years a truly massive one hits, a cataclysmic one.
Seymour Skinner has his fingers crossed 🤞
One hell of a year
Cool! Sad I couldn't see it because of the clouds
That will affect the Binaries,
We see those all the time in the country...
wow how will people survive all that time without their smart homes. could be mass panic in the cities.🤣🤣🤣 just like war of the worlds. HG Wells is still laughing about the gullibility of people.
They fell for it but it was not intentional was it?
Won’t be mass panic, most people are aware of the effects of these solar storms.
We are more used to it because it happens more often.
Northern lights seen south of the 49th parallel was an event that would happen once every 20 years.
Last year we had 6 such events.
And no, the Sun is not getting more out of hand. The solar cycles have been weakening since the 80s.
It's not a conspiracy. It's just a fact that are in an ongoing magnetic excursion.
Which causes the magnetosphere to weaken.
Sweet. No cloud cover in my area tonight, can't wait. 😊
Did anyone see it now? I'm here in Southern Ontario and it's just partly cloudy...
I saw it on the night of May 10 @ 10:30pm… in Essex.. it was strange.. not very visible with the naked eye but as soon as I put my phone up and looked through the camera and took pictures with my phone, it all showed up, cool, but creepy
Look up Carrington event.
We’ve seen them as far south as southern Arizona!
I just went outside and I could see it
Not to forget the other far less celestial wonder, the Boris's Areolas!
They were amazing last night in Nova Scotia.
Just last night i was noticing streaks in the sky which i thought was weird... I'm in Vancouver Island, we never get northern lights
was it visible in Halifax??
Yeah, my whole family got to see them all across BC. And all the neighbours got out to see too. If you had a niece phone. It would capture the pictures even better than you could see them with the naked eye. It was the best colour display I had ever seen. Here in Victoria.
There are now 7 Halo cme's released heading our way. 3 @ KP8-9 and the latest is KP5.8
We'll be experiencing the high speed electromagnetic charged particles bombarding the upper atmosphere from the 10 through to the 13 at least ... perhaps the 14th as well. The waves are close and may combine but its not a kill shot.
Stealing Yellow Knife's thunder, eh?
I noticed that the SkyTracker Weather logo seems to appear on everything in here?
If you look at the map the GTA is actually just outside the zone and wont see it which is like 20% of canadas population
We were in the centre of the storm and it looked like it was coming down on us
do you think we can see them tonight too?
Is it flat?

Ooooh - power outages would be excellent for adding viewing spots close to home!
Power outage in the magnitude of an EMP.....? Kills phones, computers, cars with computers, house electricity. And by kills I mean never to work again.
I MISSED THE NORTHEN LIGHTS 💀
i could see them from my balcony. first time i ever seen it. really amazing.
Where in Canada are you?

Okay now I'm even more excited it's more intense than it's been in decades not years I was misinformed ❤❤❤
If you look at the map is GTA is actually just outside the zone and wont see it
So this will interfere with satellites, aviation etc….
Any display of the northern lights that isn't bright enough to be seen in the city isn't worth getting out of bed to see. At work I would keep an eye on the night sky as a major geomagnetic storm would mean we would have to stop drilling and I'd get the night off. If you looking to see them go to the centre of a park, if there is a good display you'll see them.
Danke für die tollen Informationen !! The best from munich/bavaria/germany...😘
Good thing we dont need to visit Iceland for it... hope for sunny day 😅
With this giant solar storm, the icecaps & glaciers just lost about 12" of ice! Expect floods everywhere! I'm preparing!
start building that ark !
It’s all good! I have my arm floaties ready to go.
So now what a Solar Storm Tax .? would not surprise me .

Interesting they're not freaking out in USA like they did for the eclipse. Maybe we'll get a huge amount of falling stars this time like in the old engravings.
We are close to a Carrington event
1859 !
Possibly.
And they look for a great place to see it. I agree this makes me nervous not happy.
@aurorajones8481 It's not the end of the world. No way in hell. Will there be damage? Of course. But, dont let it worry you away from enjoying it.
A Carrington event strength CME would send us back into the stone age
Reminds me of the game “The Long Dark”
Reminds me of the Seymour's Kitchen event of 1996.

light pollutions at the big cities though. :(
What’s next solar change? Maybe we should all stop breathing
just pay ur solar tax and you'll be fine

Lets hope it puts the carrington event to shame. If you live in the Ottawa area and the grid goes down.... you know what to do.
I don't know what to do....

No thanks. Why would i hope for that.

I don’t think so bro
😆 😊
It wouldn’t be the lights going out but it would be electronics internet etc
Addressing climate change takes precedence over mitigating the potential impact of a solar flare on the grid. Constructing lead enclosures around critical grid infrastructure could effectively solve the issue at a reasonable cost, yet this solution remains largely unexplored.
Nice standup routine. You should take this material on the road.
@@rottenrabbit,your funny.
Because its not actually affected anyone since we have modernized. Fools. The many warnings yet we all remain stupidly un prepared.
@@aurorajones8481
For a lot of people, a problem isn't a concern or doesn't exist unless it happens to them. And those same people certainly won't want to pay or do what's necessary to avoid the problem, sometimes even after it has happened to them.
Yup. And as lovely as those can be to view, more of them--and more which are larger--isn't a good thing. 😕 Granted, no one will care; they'll just be like: "OOOH, pretty lights!"
Don’t forget folks. The Sun is the most powerful object in the universe. Capable of controlling the weather on all 9 planets, something man cannot do on our planet.
Omg now the Sun has storms now what's next Moon tornadoes?
Luckily I have a very big tinfoil hat
we saw them last century in Windsor....we were just outside the city. We got the green ones....so beautiful!! And even more fascinating...you could hear crackling from the electricity of the lights! The bad news? the first rule of weather is ""meteorological phenomena cause clouds"" One American station said the best was 8PM and 3 AM
Saw that on my way home in lighthouse cove from a Pantera concert back then.
@@Wargutz666 amazing, aren't they? All the best to you!
That's not what happened back in 2003 thank you very much you are incorrect please check your data something happen in the United States when overloaded the power grid in the United States on the Eastern Seaboard and then it caused a power outage here in Ontario it wasn't anything to do with an aurora radialis this was done in the broad daylight .... I know cuz I work for Hydro One
"I work for Hydro One" February 9, 2024 19:30 you broke my computer stud. Big grief. It weren't no Rory's Boreolisses did that.

I'm genuinely surprised they didn't blame it on climate change.
How would this relate to climate change? An expert, whose reputation is on the line, wouldn't stick their neck out for a claim like that unless there was evidence to support it.
I'm genuinely surprised how dumb of a statement that is
