Northern lights could appear across Canada as "severe" geomagnetic storm nears

  • The most severe geomagnetic storm of the past 20 years is expected to hit Earth on Friday night, which could impact power grid systems, navigation and radio and satellite communication.
But the upside to this rare event is that Canadians across the country may be able to see a spectacular display of aurora borealis.
The U.S.'s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which tracks space weather events, is anticipating that northern lights could be seen as far south as northern California and Alabama. The geomagnetic storm may last throughout the weekend.
Global's Ross Hull reports on this phenomenal event.

Don't worry, you'll all see it, there are actually now 6, full Halo, CME's on their way and one has just hit us already. This is just the beginning, it'll be a sporty weekend, hope you took out cash. This isn't going to end on Saturday, it takes up to and about 3 days travel time from the sun for the bulk to hit us, as I'm watching NOAA all night, we've had at least two more CMEs, full Halo, on their way. So, this, as I said, is just beginning, our grids are going to continue to take hits for at least the next three days.

Northern lights seen south of the 49th parallel was an event that would happen once every 20 years.

And no, the Sun is not getting more out of hand. The solar cycles have been weakening since the 80s.

At work I would keep an eye on the night sky as a major geomagnetic storm would mean we would have to stop drilling and I'd get the night off. If you looking to see them go to the centre of a park, if there is a good display you'll see them.

For a lot of people, a problem isn't a concern or doesn't exist unless it happens to them. And those same people certainly won't want to pay or do what's necessary to avoid the problem, sometimes even after it has happened to them.

Yup. And as lovely as those can be to view, more of them--and more which are larger--isn't a good thing. 😕 Granted, no one will care; they'll just be like: "OOOH, pretty lights!"

And even more fascinating...you could hear crackling from the electricity of the lights! The bad news? the first rule of weather is ""meteorological phenomena cause clouds"" One American station said the best was 8PM and 3 AM

No one has caught on yet, but soon it won't be something we will be able to hide much longer.
Northern lights being seen below the 49th parallel was an event seen once every 20 years or so. Last year it happened 6 times.
The news is trying to sell it as normal now.
And it's not to do with the sun getting more out of hand.
Solar cycles have been getting weaker since the 80's.
Our Magnetosphere is rapidly getting weaker because of the ongoing magnetic excursion.
You have about 10 to 20 years left where you can enjoy electricity.
