I would be kind of interested in this one if they had more motor choices. Maybe 1000 watt paired with a 35 amp controller. 4 piston 203mm brakes. Then 52V batteries. But the retro looks are fine. It just needs to compete better with higher speed bikes now available.
yes, they are for long term business and doing all legally. I think in California they will not be able to buy liability insurance for motor over 750w motor. They are great for teenagers to keep the bike restricted and for long time investment as bike comes very well made and good parts on it.
$449 in 2024 for a 14ah is insane should be a 20ah for that price. And the top speed on throttle and the motor is a let down also. over 2 grand and less there are way better option.
I understand your perspective, but they are custom-built on order and built in the USA, which includes the batteries, also assembled in the USA. It's a USA-based company. I'm certain you can find cheaper options, but they won't be the same.

I just hate ebikes that are still using square type crank spindles. They should really adopt mtb crank that are hollow for ease of maintenance

This company is going to stay in the "legal only" safe zone I'm afraid. No thrill, average bikes with cosmetics a main theme. No juice!
