The Australian Society of Archivists' (ASA) Council unanimously endorsed the Charter of Lifelong Rights in Childhood Recordkeeping in Out-of-Home Care at its meeting on Friday 18 March 2022. Joining a chorus of other voices, Council endorsed the Charter to show clear support of the aspirations and intentions of the Charter to improve recordkeeping for people who are, or have, experienced out-of-home care.
The ASA supports the rights and principles contained within the Charter and hopes as a representative body that this endorsement will lead to greater recognition and action to implement it, within the Australian archival community. The Charter is an important document which "acknowledges that individuals who have experienced out-of-home care have direct authority to speak about the ways in which recordkeeping impacts the exercise of their rights leading up to, during and after care.”
