- Israel's Artem Dolgopyat won a historic gold medal in artistic gymnastics, claiming the men's floor exercise gold during the first of four apparatus finals. Prior to this, no gymnast from the nation had won a medal of any colour in the sport at the Olympic Games and only one other athlete has won gold in Olympic history - Gal Fridman's sailing gold in 2004.
Dolgopyat came off the floor not knowing if he'd done enough, after a few bouncy landings and having incurred a .100 neutral deduction for going out of the area.
It took a moment for the score and placement to register with Dolgopyat matching the score from Rayderley Zapata of Spain (14.933). The duo had the same execution score, usually the tie-breaker. But the Israeli had a .1 advantage in the difficulty score to win the tie break.
China's XIAO Ruoteng was the bronze medallist at 14.766. _____________________________________________________

The Israeli gymnast clearly did a double front with 1.5 twist and a triple double. I wonder why the commentator couldn't see it. Impossible to miss.

I just don't get how Artem had a higher E score than Zapata. Zapata nailed his routine - Artem landed low, went out of bounds & generally was a more jittery performance.

I understand where you are coming from, but can also understand the judges.
Zapata's second line had a giant step back, which is a 0.5 deduction. Every single one of Artem's landings was arguably a 0.1 hop/step, except for the double triple which had a hop and a step. So essentially that one bad landing from Zapata was worth 5 of Artem's landings in deductions.
Additionally, if you look at Zapata's Zapata (1 and a half twisting double front), the tuck is VERY OPEN. It's almost a layout. This is actually a decently big deduction.
So while i also reckon that Zapata should have had a higher E-score, the judging was still valid.
It's wild that the tie breaker turned out that way. I feel like the out of bounds penalty should've been taken into consideration for that but it seems they disregarded it and counted it as both of them having the same E score.
Unfortunately ties work that way. Artem's 1 tenth penalty technically isn't considered as part of the execution deductions. Firstly they check who had the higher Execution Score. Nobody. So then they checked who had the Highest Difficulty. Which was Artem.

The absence of Kazuki Minami is definitely hurt. He's one of the best in the world right now. I really hope the FIG can allow more gymnasts from Japan, China, or even Russia to compete at the Olympics and World Championships instead of just 6. Minami has 5 out of 10 highest scored floor performances in 2021, yet he wasn't selected to Tokyo and underperformed in Kitakyushu. Now he's also working hard on vault and be in top 20 (=13) of vaulters with highest scores. Hope that it will be enough for him to be listed for team and final 6 at next year World Championships.

I feel contemporary floor routines are only about raw athleticism, choreography/artistry feels like a foreign body.
@@idraote I disagree. I find their routines super boring and they do this very weird little jump after a tumbling pass and its just 🥶🥶 I don’t see all athleticism too tbh. What was that double double from Nikita??? I’ve seem small gymnasts from women side do it better. Gold medal routine’s landings are cringing me. His triple double was fine but I’ve see better (from Biles).
@@Fvhlipe in defense of Nikita, you might’ve noticed by his entire floor routine but in case you missed it he was not in a good health condition during the EF. He was passing a kidney stone so he barely got any sleep and had high fever. Nikita is probably one of the most interesting male gymnasts to watch on floor cause you never know what to expect. He obviously can do a huge variety of skills and can adjust his routines easily. Lately he’s been making up his floor routines on the spot
Zapata should have won this. His performance was clearly the best of all of these.

@@Fvhlipe Agree. Also they used the D score as tie break since E score was the same, but it just means that the winner of the tie break has more neutral deductions. I really disagree with that rule because imo neutral deductions like OOB should fall under E score too

They had the same execution score, so Artem won because his difficulty was 0.1 higher than Ray’s. The tiebreaker applied for this occasion disregarded his 0.1 penalty for going out of bounds

They tiebreak on execution, but if the execution is the same, they move on and tiebreak with difficulty. Artem's step out of the floor was taken as a PENALTY deduction and not an execution deduction.

Desde os anos 60 é assim, sem motivos. Várias competições os homens faziam movimentos de ballet, era lindo. Eu suponho que colocaram música e mudaram as roupas femininas para algo similar a um collant de ballet apenas para atrair mais público, atletas e diferenciar dos homens.

This is so unfair, the israelí guy made so many mistakes, and he got the gold? There were some other routines so much cleaner and more fluent, and beautiful.
They weigh it too heavily on difficulty. The execution should weigh more.

Ray had a higher execution score, your description portion is incorrect. If he had the same execution score then Dolgopyat would have won by a tenth because of his tenth-higher difficulty. Anyway stan Ray, he should've won, it's bull that they break ties based on difficulty and not on execution like in WAG
Don't think so. Execution is calculated separately from penalties. So they both had the same execution score but Dolgopyat had a tenth higher in difficulty but scores were made equal by his penalty for going out of the area

Now that I look back at Artem and Ray's performances, I don't think it was fair that Artem's execution was the same as Ray's. Ray had much better landings, and should've been the champion. Regardless, delighted for him that he won his olympic medal

He faltered on the handstand from the flares, but yes I thought the execution was a bit harsh. He literally stuck everything cold other than the dismount, and he was the only one to score above a 9 in execution for qualifications
