Hahaha. Great reaction and definitely NotACult (but its the Frog Pit for non-believers 🐸🐸) Just Su-metal's 16th birthday party, didn't you do anything similar for your 16th?
There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013).
I will try to explain what was actually happening.
There is an English translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
    "Legend 1997.
It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal,
she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied
    DOOMSDAY comes
There remains ... little time ..."
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:-
"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "
    Professor & Know-it-all desu" (I am Professor & Know-it-all).
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played early in 2021), the last before those was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀
'Legend 1997' is named for Su-metal's birth year.
This concert was held December 21st, 2013, the day after her 16th birthday.
The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up.
Generally without the crucifixion. : )
This performance was unusual since it was used as the closing number.
Here's a translation of the introduction:
"It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…"
Kami Band members for this concert were guitarists Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus, BOH on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
The song title, 'BABYMETAL Death' and the lyrics are a play on words in Japanese.
In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are".
It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. : )
So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL".
    The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" one letter at a time.

    Good reaction, thanks!
Nothing weird or satanic is going on here. The Bible Belt can take it easy. This is just the way Su-metal celebrated her 16th birthday hanging out with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting "DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!...". Pretty normal I guess... Hahaha... 🤣
The entire concert (Legend 1997) is an allegory about BABYMETAL's transformation from a j-pop idol group sub-unit into a legit metal band. And this was just the final number, the ultimate sacrifice of Su as a human and idol to reborn as a metal goddess.
By the way, the guitarist with the big smile was Mikio Fujioka who sadly passed away just five years ago on January 5th 2018. Rest in peace Ko-Gami.
    Until next time!

The "Legend 1997 - Apocalypse" show was probably their most thematically consistent and detailed. Many of the comments have given a lot of explanations. But another influence at play is from the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime franchise 1997 film "Death & Rebirth." Indeed, during the concert Su-metal sings a cover of the D&R theme song Tamashii no Rufuran (Soul's Refrain). Well worth a listen and view.

    Death Legend 1997 Apocalypse:-
Legend 1997 Apocalypse is a concert celebrating Su-Metal aka Suzuka Nakamoto 16th Birthday 🎉(Seitansai) which took place in Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture.
Metallic Fans will notice the opening riffs which derived from Metallica song "ONE" which pays homage to Metallica.
    Live:-
Death Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (stylized as LIVE~LEGEND 1999&1997 APOCALYPSE) is the second live video release by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal. The album contains live footage of two shows, entitled Legend "1999" and Legend "1997" (named after birth years of the members of Babymetal), performed in Japan in 2013. It was released in 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray formats on October 29, 2014.
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse:,
    Released: October 29, 2014.
    Recorded:
    June 30, 2013 (Legend "1999").
    December 21, 2013 (Legend"1997").
    Venue:
    NHK Hall (Legend "1999").
    Makuhari Messe (Legend "1997").
Genre: Kawaii metal, J-pop, heavy metal.
    Length:
    75:28 (Legend "1999")
    82:24 (Legend "1997")
    Label:
    BMD Fox Toy's Factory Amuse
    Director: InniVision
    Producer: Kobametal
    Babymetal video chronology Live:,
    Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse (2013).
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (2014).
Live at Budokan: Red Night & Black Night Apocalypse (2015).
The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The symbology is a bit different between eastern/western cultures for sure. I think this was a stage theatrical display to show that Babymetal(Su) was sacrificing her J-pop Idol (via Sakura Gakuin Idol school) to the Fox God. They also wanted to separate the on/off stage personas early in the formation of the band..in fact many times when asked during interviews about what happened during a certain stage moment they would say they have no memories of the actual concert and that it was all performed under control of the Fox God. There were several times when one of them would 'break' character(being very young) and answer a question and the other girls would be shocked and then the hosts would make a joke to help them out. I find the whole history of this band fascinating.

    *BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*.
    Song: BABYMETAL DEATH.
The monologue at the start is in Japanese.
So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue).
    "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…
BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*.
Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and geting them up on there feet bouncing and geting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin.
But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not geting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year".
So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess.
"All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*.
Bye the way #NotaCult, most definitely #NotaCult and anyone claiming different will be dragged in front of your Goddess and thrown into the pit of frogs or if you catch her on a bad day she will just burn you.

Nice reaction. I've said it before, and I will say it again. Nobody is ready for Babymetal Death. Putting that aside what we just watched was Babymetals workout video. LoL. They have mentioned how tired they would get from all the jumping during this song. Which is actually just them introducing themselves. Lyrics I'm Su-metal, I'm Yuimetal, I'm Moametal, Babymetal. As such it was usually used in the past as their opening song. If that doesn't get you pumped for the show nothing will. Here it used as the end of the show. As for the Bible belt going crazy. Probably but I think once someone actually explained to them what is going on in the show. They will come to understand and may even be proud of them. Why? Simple it shows a real understanding of sacrifice and transformation. The Legend 1997 show which is named after Su-metals birth year. Was done as a rock opera. The whole of the show told the story of Babymetal going from Jpop idols into becoming Kawaii metal icons. Focusing on Su-metal to tell the story. The statue which is a representation of Su-metal as a pure jpop idol. Is also a tribute to Metallica's And Justice For All tour. Where they would break the statue of Justice at the end of the show. Also, the riff to start the song. Is another tribute to Metallica as it calls back to the song One. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japans drummer who broke his neck from headbanging. True story. In an interview Su mentioned she feel the heat from those flames and felt they were to close for her comfort. I've notice ever since then. The pyrotechnics have moved further away from her. She's smart after all. While all that heavy is going on during this performance Babymetal is Babymetal and the Kawaii will come out somewhere. Watch when Yui and Moa are about to put the neck brace on Su and they start to giggle. Then Moa has to fix Su's hair because she has to look good when they sacrifice her. Yup they're Kawaii metal. Here is something that will really kick you. This isn't even the heaviest version of the song. During the 10 years of Babymetal shows at the Budokan in 2021. They introduced us to the Shin Death version. Starting the show with Su, Moa and the avenger Momoko being sacrificed. A throwback to this show. Babymetal know their history well. Even if they can't remember what they just did on stage at times. I bet there's a lot of bands who don't remember that either. For their third album they gave us another introduction song. "In The Name Of ". They started the Legend S concert for Su's 20th birthday with an amazing performance of it. You should definitely check that out. Another reason why Babymetal live is best Babymetal. Why just because you watched the song once before you should watch it again from another show. As Babymetal will do variations of their songs. Enjoy the journey through the foxhole and into the Babymetal galaxy of music.

Who doesn't enjoy a bit of theatrical autodafe? Here BM appropriate the symbolism of Easter to use as part of their own lore and apply it to Su's transformation from a schoolgirl into a metal goddess to save "metal". They have also taken Shinto images of the fox that is associated with Inari so they are borrowing from many traditions.
"Babymetal DEATH" is how BM usually says "hello" and introduces themselves. It's the first song on their first album and has often been used to start a concert. But here it is used as a big messianic, pun of a finale. To English speakers the song seems to be all about death, when in fact it is BM saying who they are and affirming their presence. The lyrics go "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal".
This concert, Legend 1997, celebrates Su's 16 birthday and her transition in BM lore from a school girl into a metal goddess. It also is a transformation of BM from an idol group to a metal band as they start with a lip synced, dubstep version of Headbanger and end with this live version of Babymetal DEATH backed by the Kami band. The DNA helix in the intro visuals to this song also appears on Su's stick mic in Headbanger and is an icon of life and transformation. This is reiterated in the use of the Christian iconography of the crucifixion. Death and life exist together... #notacult.

It's a play on words. Death sounds like the Japanese word Desu meaning I am/we are. The U is mostly silent. Babymetal Death is also We Are Babymetal. They are introducing themselves. Su-metal Death: I am Su-metal. Yui-metal Death: I am Yui-metal. Moa-metal Death: I am Moa-Metal. Babymetal Death: We Are Babymetal. It's a double meaning. It's both.
So the crowd chanting Death Death Death is also We Are We Are We Are.
There is a Japanese word seitan that sounds like Satan. Broken by the Scream likes that play on words. Seitan Seitan Seitan. Seitan means bolder.

@@professorandknowitall also if nobody told you the smiling guitarist is Mikio who passed away in early 2018. 2018 was a very bad year for Babymetal. Yui Mizuno left the group about the same time as Mikio's tragic death. They made a 3 song story about it. Starlight, Shine and Arkadia. Shine is a beautiful song with a gorgeous stage show. Babymetal has never said the songs were about Yui or Mikio or both but I think it's both. They're about the group's struggles with those events imo. Mikio was more tragic but Yui leaving was much more damaging to the group.

Dont know what makes you think we are a cult 🤔. We only just crucified our Jpop Queen to have her resurrected as our Metal Goddess .

Yes. Obsessed is probably right. Babymetal is so different and unique. Each song is different. They use all metal genres mixed with other genres. I literally cut my teeth on Black Sabbath. Born the year they came out. I like everything from Metallica to Motley Crue to Iron Maiden to Sex Pistols. Plus other genres. Babymetal is right up my alley.

Not sure but the smiling guitarist you are referring to might be Mikio Fujioka Who passed away 5 yrs ago on Jan. 5th please do a belated tribute to the memory of Mikio this link is to a Posthumus version by his surviving bandmates the song is called "The hill of Wisteria" It incorporates a backing track with Mikios solo guitar section. here it is ruclips.net/video/-jSZR9g-Y_M/видео.html

Back in 2012, when they use to open smaller concerts in smaller stages, when they were so small that they need to stand on pedestals on stage to be seen by audience, that's when they open concerts with DEATH. Dark settings, lasers, non-smiling girls, and hundreds of people shouting DEATH around you... Quite intimidating actually, especially when one came mainly expecting Doki Doki Morning.
And yes, they do incorporate a bit religious iconographies in their stage back then, for better or worse :)
