I'm so thrilled that you have started your own channel, Tammy. I'm one of Jordan's former students from around 2008-2010. He probably wouldn't remember me, but Jordan had an enormous impact on me and my husband (we even met in his class)! We used to marvel at his brilliance and wonder how he wasn't well known to the world. We have continued following him ever since, and we are not at all surprised to see what has unfolded for him in terms of his notoriety. All this time, you were another well-kept secret, and you're finally revealing yourself to the world. Speaking to when Jonathan was eluding to change that takes place in the bread and wine in the Sacrament of Communion, my wife is gluten-free and notices even very small amounts of it of she eats it, but she is able to take Communion without any effects, she is even able to eat the antidiron (blessed bread.) The bread and wine are no longer just bread and wine in the Eucharist....
I actually disagree with you and our friend Jonathan here, it’s still physically bread. 1 of 2 things is going on with your lovely wife 1. There is such a small amount of gluten in the Eucharistic bread that it doesn’t have a profound impact 2. Some small miracle is occurring (on top of the incredible miracle of Christ’s body and soul as communion) which disinhibits your wife’s allergy. But 100% the Eucharist is still bread, look at it under the microscope and there’s still gluten. The spiritual change of substance does not alter the physical accidents of bread-ness except in rare miraculous cases that are carefully considered before being declared supernatural. Whatever the case, it’s awesome you and your wife are close to God, hope to catch you in heaven. Also, the make gluten-free hosts which your priest can validly consecrate upon request.
medically gluten-free person here, with the exact same experience. I am not Orthodox yet but I partake of the blessed bread with no ill effects. The church is full of beautiful mysteries!
You're probably aware that the priest or deacon that has been serving the liturgy has to eat and drink the entirety of the remaining Eucharist after finishing the service. Since I'm a student of theology at Belgrade University and a reader, I've talked to priests and bishops who have served liturgies among the sickest people you can imagine - in prisons, mental asylums, hospitals, giving the Eucharist to people with aids, hepatitis, and God knows what else, and then consuming everything left in the chalice. None of them ever got sick. There's a great book in Serbian from bishop Irinaeus of Bačka called "Свето Причешће - Лек Бесмртности" (Holy Eucharist - The Medicine of Immortality) where he brings up actual studies showing that no disease could spread via the Eucharist. The Eucharist in the Orthodox Chruch truly is the very Christ himself. You cannot get sick from the Source of Life.

I usually prayer 5x a day and more a day, specially in the middle of night, that quiet moment with Allah swt, just me abd Him (swt) thats best time of my life, no pleasure in world is greater....remembering Allah swt and just informal prayer dua and praising Him swt and seeking forgiveness for day to days sin, give me soo much sakinah tranquility in my heart and soul, so I can manage my inner emotions better, so I am less reactive and frustrated at the people or world around me...the taste of this feeling is beyond words.... Your husband equipped me with the intellectual tools to grapple with religion, to dispel the grip of secular materialism, and Jonathan brought me home, helped me atone and find faith.
Tammy, I met you and your husband in January near DC with Metropolitan Jonah, and I gave you a copy of an Akathist to the Holy Virgin. I'm severely allergic to gluten (Celiac disease), and I can receive Holy Communion at any Eastern Orthodox Church without negative symptoms. Glory to God!

We need to accept our powerlessness... Deconstruct the EGO, often referred to as "Edging God Out". Then, when the spiritual malady is overcome, we straighten out mentally and physically; by working the 12 steps. We are "reborn or... resurrected" if you will. This idea/concept is applicable to anyone.

31:36 “If I could but touch the hem of his garment” I love the faith of this woman! You don’t *need* the bread of Christ to be saved, but you do need to be a part of his body. Since his Body is in the bread, that’s the normal and ordinary means of grace. But there is also spiritual communion, open to all who want to fully receive Christ in their hearts but who cannot access the official sacraments of the Church for whatever reason. Jonathan is right, you NEED to commune with God. The nuance to add is that there are even examples of Catholic and Orthodox communities that go a whole generation without a priest or an established church but still make spiritual progress and become close to God through baptism and the scriptures. Obviously a rich and complete sacramental life is preferred above anything else in life, but it is not absolutely necessary.
You can receive communion in the Catholic Church only in the form of consacrated Wine. But you have to be in Communion with the Church, as Jonathan said, and explained so well. For both Catholics and Orthodox, Communion is the center of the life is Christ, because it IS Christ himself.
Tammy, I'm so glad you have a channel! I look forward to being on this journey with you. There are Gluten Free Wafers in my Catholic Church, and they are very very tiny--the size of a quarter. Maybe ask your priest at the appropriate time. The whole time I was in RCIA class (class for new folks coming into the Catholic Church--I was Methodist--) I went up at communion and received the blessing with arms crossed. I loved that too--I had first communion this past Easter. I look forward to seeing everything you learn and have to say. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 2015. Metastasis to my liver and both lungs. Now I'm in remission for 7 years now. I identify with that aspect of your story. Thank you and God Bless you and your family. I have read the “Way of a Pilgrim.” I bought it from St. Anthony’s Coptic monastery in Barstow. I love reading or listening to the Orthodox Elders. They’re so profound. I have a great devotion to St. Nectarios. It’s interesting that I very much enjoy and feel at home with both Catholic and Orthodox spirituality but sadly they don’t try to go deeper into understanding each other’s spirituality. Both churches are so rich with beautiful traditions and ways of worship that if shared it will be of great benefit to the church. Thank you Jonathan and Tammy. ✝️😇 I always pray for the unity of the churches and I think we all should.
I'm still trying to find a church that gives me depth, of thoughtful spirituality, personal challenge and hopeful faith. I've had 3 financial reports instead of a sermon. And today, today was so shallow I was in tears of frustration as I took communion. I would love to find community and well as thoughtful spiritual leadership. There is a great challenge for spiritual seekers with advanced mental fascinations “With much wisdom comes much vexation.” Not that it’s bad to be smart. But if you believe in community, you HAVE to accept that sometimes you might be the smartest person in the room dealing with a bunch of lackluster ideas even if you’re all centered towards a higher good. This is not to say just join a church if the idiots have no love and are greedy to the point of complete spiritual corruption. But it’s also to say that if you expect the real world community of your neighbors to be as intellectually stimulating as consuming the breadth of the world’s knowledge in hyperspeed as on youtube, you’re never going to be happy. I hope you find a parish church that you feel welcomed into and can express your beautiful gifts in a way that bears fruit. But remember how Christ looks at you when you look at your neighbor in the pew, and you’d think even the most greedy bastard going through rote motions is just a saint in the making. Also, last point, Church liturgies are not supposed to be primarily about moral formation, friendship, intellectual stimulation, or even an exciting emotional event: the idea is to raise your heart in praise together with the people of good will, if but for only one measly hour a week you might be able to focus on something other than yourself, namely Jesus Christ, our God who loved us to the point of death and raises us up within Himself to God by way of his Spirit. If you are catholic, the first thing you have to understand is mass is not about you. It's about God. It's about giving to God, and not taking for yourself. If you are looking for spiritual enrichment and nourishment and community, then there are many orders with a lay component you can join. The Dominicans, Franciscan, and carmelites are obvious ones. But that's not mass, thats outside of mass. Most areas have some community nearby. Hope this helps.

I've come to realise that communion is very important. I was brought up Catholic and had that version weekly. I converted to orthodoxy 3 years ago and the experience and understanding is infinitely deeper (speaking for myself here and no offence intended). This last year has been the most challenging of my life. Last Sunday when I took communion at an orthodox church I was truly humbled by the strength and life giving power it provided. I wept. But good and grateful tears. The tears I needed to shed to be focused on our awesome and loving Father. It's difficult to explain but I would encourage anyone to look further into the orthodox communion and the life it provides 💛
I loved reading your witness to the power of Holy Communion and how it affected you. I am Roman Catholic. Receiving Jesus in Holy Communion gives me such peace and joy; and I, too, weep 'good and grateful' tears that the God of Heaven and earth, who allows me to consume His Body and Blood, enters my body and takes His rightful place, on the throne of my heart. For a short while I I remain still and tell Him that I am so grateful for His presence that I wish to share Him with all those who are unable to receive Him. The Roman Catholic church recognises the Holy Orders of the Eastern Orthodox church and, though there is a schism, we are one when we receive the Eucharist ❤
I understand what you’re saying. I’m an Armenian Orthodox and I attend mass in the Catholic Church. I love the Catholic devotions, specially the Rosary and the Divine Mercy prayers and prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I like the symbolism. As for the communion I wish the priests would give the communion in a more solemn and not so fast and casual way. That hurts me! Then there is the Eucharistic adoration. It’s the same thing over there. But of course not all priests are like that. For example Fr. Mark Goring and Fr. Alar and a few more. They are full of passion for Christ and the fire of the Holy Spirit.I also love the Greek Orthodox spirituality and their solemnity. I pray the Jesus prayer very often and it goes very deep inside me. It’s so profound. Well, may God unite all the churches bc Christ established one church and division comes from Satan. I told myself I wasn't going to watch RUclips on Easter Sunday....but I've been dealing with illness quite a bit in 2022, and got to a point today where I was so tired, I couldn't do anything else. I've been feeling so out of it, I was not able to go to church this morning, or visit with relatives, something I try to do every Easter. So I'm here by myself, resting, watching RUclips, and thankfully, this popped up as a recommended video. So glad for it! This was my "Sunday service." Janathan Pageau has been everywhere on RUclips lately, and I'm very glad for it. Anyway, I had several thoughts concerning this conversation: 1. Tammy wisely mentions those times when we "have our leg trapped in a snare", when we come to the end of ourselves in the material world, and see no way forward. Amongst Alcoholics Anonymous, this is known as "rock bottom"; when you have gotten to a point where you either change or die, because "the same old..." just isn't going to cut it anymore. Everyone of us has our equivalent of a "rock bottom" moment in life, where we have to decide what's truly important. In a way, the crucifixion was Jesus' "rock bottom" moment, and he went right into it. 2. In regards to the crucifixion, there are three main messages that come from Jesus death and resurrection that are most important to me: - God demonstrates his LOVE for man, by allowing himself to be killed by those who should have been the most welcoming. - God demonstrates that death is NOT the end of life, but the beginning of life eternal. - And lastly, God demonstrates that you have to go through hell to get to heaven. For Jesus, his "hell" was the crucifixion itself. But it is also taught that Jesus literally went to hell, not because of his guilt, but to literally set souls free who were trapped there. 3. I've read "The Way of the Pilgrim" as mentioned by Jonathan, and have to say it is one of the greatest spiritual works ever written, right up there with the Bible. I encourage everyone to buy a copy and read it. It's a demonstration of how "The Jesus Prayer" can be a very powerful practice in one's life. Lately, I've felt called to go back to the wisdom of the Jesus Prayer, and was so glad to hear you talk about it. For me, this was confirmation that I need to get back to that practice. 4. In regards to prayer, a Catholic Polish nun known as St. Faustina, who lived in Poland right before the outbreak of WWII, is one of the most important saints to learn about and follow at this point in time in world history. Jesus himself gave her a new way to pray the Rosary, where it's basically praying the Jesus Prayer for the entire world, as well as yourself. This new way of praying the Rosary is known as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There is an American Shrine of Devine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts that broadcasts this chaplet everyday on RUclips at 3 pm Eastern time. I would encourage everyone to get to know more about this prayer and St. Faustina, as it's a real blessing. 5. Communion. There is the literal, physical practice of communion that is commonly done by Orthodox and Catholic churches, involving the wafer and the wine. But there is deeper meaning and purpose of "communion" that is taught by the saints, and that is union with God, or Devine Union. Of the two, the second is a far, far more important form of communion. While you don't have to choose between the two, the material form of communion is the symbol of the spiritual Devine Union. You can engage in the material practice without ever encountering for feeling the spiritual equivalent, but once a soul enters into Devine Union, which is entirely spiritual, you will finally be able to see the material world for what it really is, and truly understand the love and mercy of God. From the Encyclopedia Britannica: "The goal of the mystic is not simply a transient ecstasy; it is a permanent state of being in which the person’s nature is transformed or deified. This state is frequently spoken of as a spiritual marriage involving God and the soul. This unitive life has two main aspects. First, while the consciousness of self and the world remains, that consciousness is accompanied by a continuous sense of union with God, as Teresa of Ávila clearly shows in discussing the seventh mansion in The Interior Castle. Brother Lawrence wrote that while he was at work in his kitchen he possessed God “in as great tranquillity as if I were upon my knees at the Blessed Sacrament” (The Practice of the Presence of God, chapter 4). Second, the spiritual marriage is a theopathic state: the soul is felt to be in all things the organ or instrument of God. In the unitive life Mme Guyon says that the soul “no longer lives or works of herself, but God lives, acts and works in her.” In this state the mystic is able to engage in manifold activities without losing the grace of union. In the words of Ignatius of Loyola, the mystic is “contemplative in action.” 6. On Jesus becoming the serpent: as strange as it sounds, this symbolism is very important. Moses actually made serpent made of bronze, mounted it on a pole, and used it as a means of healing those Israelis who had been bitten by serpents. It's referenced briefly in the Book of Numbers, chapter 21. Thanks again for doing and sharing this video! It was a real blessing.
Beautiful discussion between the two of you. Thank you. With every podcast I hear with Mr. Pageau, the more appreciative I grow. I love the richness in the Orthodox traditions. Re. communion, I know it's already been commented on, but just in case it's not fully understood: the tiniest amount only needs to be taken. A crumb of the Host, a sip from the cup wetting your tongue for the fullness of Jesus to be present. Let concerns for diet or health not be an impediment. One or the other can be taken for full communion. The most important thing in receiving is believing, and wanting to be in union. Perhaps that decision hasn't been made in the heart to identify with a particular Faith for fear or doubt or wanting to remain neutral or open to exploration. So, wait for it. It's a journey no one can rush you on. You will *know* when you desire nothing else. Love and prayers.

I'm increasingly coming to appreciate the importance of communion- to crave it and be satisfied by it. It has drawn me to go to daily mass more frequently, rather than Sunday only.

Dear Tammy, your eagerness to find the truth is really moving and I'm sure that God will lighten your path. As a Greek Orthodox who hasn't always been religious, I can confirm that Orthodox church is a hospital for the soul. I think that it would be useful for you to find a priest and confess, that's the first step. Confessing to a priest it's not the same thing as confessing to a friend. It is often that people being reluctant to open up to a "stranger" they think that talking to a friend can replace this procedure. It can't. As regards the Communion, you can't get no harm by it. Just consider this. In Orthodox church, whatever is left inside the holy grail, after all attendants have received their spoon of bread and wine (Body and Blood), the priest is obliged to consume it himself. And the same thing happens in times of pandemic, in hospitals with highly contagious diseases and so on. So, the Orthodox priests should have been a professional group with a very high rate of morbidness and a low rate of life expectancy, but this doesn't happen. There was even an island in Greece where the Greek state would send the lepers. Same thing there, there was a healthy priest who served the community of lepers for a decade and never got Ill.
Jonathan and Tammy, while I admit I had little interest in the spiritual before; I have recently had, what I can only explain as, a religious experience (in the way Jordan generally references) and since then I have come to greatly enjoy these conversations. Please keep having them.

I have been very sick lately and also off gluten (after watching some of Mikhaila's videos). But I've been meaning to talk to the priest about it. Tammy have you considered attending Orthodox Divine Liturgy, and becoming a catechumen? Because the church is the hospital for the soul. It sounds like having a bit of structure and not having to rely on your self so much would be extremely beneficial. Just a thought and God bless you.
i think she’s already attending a Roman Catholic parish, although i know the RC and Orthodox communions are divided on some issues but have more in common…the faith of the first millenium Church, than what divides them (papal supremacy and politics, differing emphases on original sin, the procession of the Holy Spirit, the role of Mary, differing emphases on divine judgement)…Christians need to work together for thr greater good
As a Believer confessing the Apostle’s Creed and in communion with Christ, Tammy you ARE VERY MUCH welcome to receive communion at any Anglican Church in the ACNA (North America). I believe it’s the Roman Catholic Church requires you have been formally “confirmed” by the Roman Catholic Church. So the Anglican Church receives members of Roman Catholic Church to be in communion, but not the other way around.
I am so grateful to Tammy for the vulnerability she shows and the questions from the heart. It’s one thing to listen to people with a lot of knowledge but I can relate to someone trying to find their way forward and dealing with all the confusion and obstacles too.

The important thing about the Jesus prayer is that you have a spiritual father, a man experienced in faith, preferably a monastic, who helps you progress and remove potentially dangerous stuff in your prayer and spiritual life. All the saints encourage everyone, not just the monks, to try and say the prayer ceaselessly. Some saints, like St Ephraim the Syrian, a great 4th century saint, say that saying the prayer is more important than breathing. This might be too much of a burden for beginners in the faith, so that's why the guidance of the spiritual father is so necessary. As Jonathan says, constant prayer is what we are fundamentally aiming to. Its important to realize that we do not only pray with our minds, but with our whole being - bodies included - so everything we do must fundamentally be aimed to God and must participate in Him and be transfigured by Him. The Eucharist supersedes mater and human understanding. I know people with all kinds of problems digestively and bodily that are not affected negatively by the eucharist. Also, there is much layered symbology to so many things within Christianity, and yet, this is not only typology, but also bound up in reality. Christs saving work, is not merely “and this is how it helps me think about and deal with my own suffering”. The whole point is missed if we do not see that we must be baptized into his suffering and be risen up to newness of life. It is tangible and it is not just about how we think. I'm one of Jordan's former students from around 2008-2010. He probably wouldn't remember me, but Jordan had an enormous impact on me and my husband (we even met in his class)! Speaking to when Jonathan was eluding to change that takes place in the bread and wine in the Sacrament of Communion, my wife is gluten-free and notices even very small amounts of it of she eats it, but she is able to take Communion without any effects, she is even able to eat the antidiron (blessed bread.) The bread and wine are no longer just bread and wine in the Eucharist....
I actually disagree with you and our friend Jonathan here, it’s still physically bread.
1 of 2 things is going on with your lovely wife
1. There is such a small amount of gluten in the Eucharistic bread that it doesn’t have a profound impact
2. Some small miracle is occurring (on top of the incredible miracle of Christ’s body and soul as communion) which disinhibits your wife’s allergy.
But 100% the Eucharist is still bread, look at it under the microscope and there’s still gluten. The spiritual change of substance does not alter the physical accidents of bread-ness except in rare miraculous cases that are carefully considered before being declared supernatural.
Whatever the case, it’s awesome you and your wife are close to God, hope to catch you in heaven.
Also, the make gluten-free hosts which your priest can validly consecrate upon request.

You're probably aware that the priest or deacon that has been serving the liturgy has to eat and drink the entirety of the remaining Eucharist after finishing the service. Since I'm a student of theology at Belgrade University and a reader, I've talked to priests and bishops who have served liturgies among the sickest people you can imagine - in prisons, mental asylums, hospitals, giving the Eucharist to people with aids, hepatitis, and God knows what else, and then consuming everything left in the chalice. None of them ever got sick. There's a great book in Serbian from bishop Irinaeus of Bačka called "Свето Причешће - Лек Бесмртности" (Holy Eucharist - The Medicine of Immortality) where he brings up actual studies showing that no disease could spread via the Eucharist.
The Eucharist in the Orthodox Chruch truly is the very Christ himself. You cannot get sick from the Source of Life.

You don’t *need* the bread of Christ to be saved, but you do need to be a part of his body. Since his Body is in the bread, that’s the normal and ordinary means of grace. But there is also spiritual communion, open to all who want to fully receive Christ in their hearts but who cannot access the official sacraments of the Church for whatever reason.
Jonathan is right, you NEED to commune with God. The nuance to add is that there are even examples of Catholic and Orthodox communities that go a whole generation without a priest or an established church but still make spiritual progress and become close to God through baptism and the scriptures. Obviously a rich and complete sacramental life is preferred above anything else in life, but it is not absolutely necessary.
You can receive communion in the Catholic Church only in the form of consacrated Wine. But you have to be in Communion with the Church, as Jonathan said, and explained so well. For both Catholics and Orthodox, Communion is the center of the life is Christ, because it IS Christ himself.
Catholic churches also have gluten free hosts available.

Maybe ask your priest at the appropriate time. The whole time I was in RCIA class (class for new folks coming into the Catholic Church--I was Methodist--) I went up at communion and received the blessing with arms crossed. I loved that too--I had first communion this past Easter. I look forward to seeing everything you learn and have to say. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 2015. Metastasis to my liver and both lungs. Now I'm in remission for 7 years now. I identify with that aspect of your story. Thank you and God Bless you and your family. I have read the “Way of a Pilgrim.” I bought it from St. Anthony’s Coptic monastery in Barstow. I love reading or listening to the Orthodox Elders. They’re so profound. I have a great devotion to St. Nectarios. It’s interesting that I very much enjoy and feel at home with both Catholic and Orthodox spirituality but sadly they don’t try to go deeper into understanding each other’s spirituality. Both churches are so rich with beautiful traditions and ways of worship that if shared it will be of great benefit to the church. Thank you Jonathan and Tammy. ✝️😇

There is a great challenge for spiritual seekers with advanced mental fascinations

Not that it’s bad to be smart. But if you believe in community, you HAVE to accept that sometimes you might be the smartest person in the room dealing with a bunch of lackluster ideas even if you’re all centered towards a higher good.
This is not to say just join a church if the idiots have no love and are greedy to the point of complete spiritual corruption.
But it’s also to say that if you expect the real world community of your neighbors to be as intellectually stimulating as consuming the breadth of the world’s knowledge in hyperspeed as on youtube, you’re never going to be happy.
I hope you find a parish church that you feel welcomed into and can express your beautiful gifts in a way that bears fruit. But remember how Christ looks at you when you look at your neighbor in the pew, and you’d think even the most greedy bastard going through rote motions is just a saint in the making.
Also, last point, Church liturgies are not supposed to be primarily about moral formation, friendship, intellectual stimulation, or even an exciting emotional event: the idea is to raise your heart in praise together with the people of good will, if but for only one measly hour a week you might be able to focus on something other than yourself, namely Jesus Christ, our God who loved us to the point of death and raises us up within Himself to God by way of his Spirit.

If you are catholic, the first thing you have to understand is mass is not about you. It's about God. It's about giving to God, and not taking for yourself.
If you are looking for spiritual enrichment and nourishment and community, then there are many orders with a lay component you can join. The Dominicans, Franciscan, and carmelites are obvious ones. But that's not mass, thats outside of mass. Most areas have some community nearby.

I've come to realise that communion is very important. I was brought up Catholic and had that version weekly. I converted to orthodoxy 3 years ago and the experience and understanding is infinitely deeper (speaking for myself here and no offence intended). This last year has been the most challenging of my life. Last Sunday when I took communion at an orthodox church I was truly humbled by the strength and life giving power it provided. I wept. But good and grateful tears. The tears I needed to shed to be focused on our awesome and loving Father. It's difficult to explain but I would encourage anyone to look further into the orthodox communion and the life it provides 💛

For a short while I I remain still and tell Him that I am so grateful for His presence that I wish to share Him with all those who are unable to receive Him.
The Roman Catholic church recognises the Holy Orders of the Eastern Orthodox church and, though there is a schism, we are one when we receive the Eucharist ❤
I understand what you’re saying. I’m an Armenian Orthodox and I attend mass in the Catholic Church. I love the Catholic devotions, specially the Rosary and the Divine Mercy prayers and prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I like the symbolism. As for the communion I wish the priests would give the communion in a more solemn and not so fast and casual way. That hurts me! Then there is the Eucharistic adoration. It’s the same thing over there. But of course not all priests are like that. For example Fr. Mark Goring and Fr. Alar and a few more. They are full of passion for Christ and the fire of the Holy Spirit.I also love the Greek Orthodox spirituality and their solemnity. I pray the Jesus prayer very often and it goes very deep inside me. It’s so profound.
Well, may God unite all the churches bc Christ established one church and division comes from Satan.

I told myself I wasn't going to watch RUclips on Easter Sunday....but I've been dealing with illness quite a bit in 2022, and got to a point today where I was so tired, I couldn't do anything else. I've been feeling so out of it, I was not able to go to church this morning, or visit with relatives, something I try to do every Easter. So I'm here by myself, resting, watching RUclips, and thankfully, this popped up as a recommended video. So glad for it! This was my "Sunday service."
Janathan Pageau has been everywhere on RUclips lately, and I'm very glad for it.
Anyway, I had several thoughts concerning this conversation:
1. Tammy wisely mentions those times when we "have our leg trapped in a snare", when we come to the end of ourselves in the material world, and see no way forward. Amongst Alcoholics Anonymous, this is known as "rock bottom"; when you have gotten to a point where you either change or die, because "the same old..." just isn't going to cut it anymore. Everyone of us has our equivalent of a "rock bottom" moment in life, where we have to decide what's truly important. In a way, the crucifixion was Jesus' "rock bottom" moment, and he went right into it.
2. In regards to the crucifixion, there are three main messages that come from Jesus death and resurrection that are most important to me:
- God demonstrates his LOVE for man, by allowing himself to be killed by those who should have been the most welcoming.
- God demonstrates that death is NOT the end of life, but the beginning of life eternal.
- And lastly, God demonstrates that you have to go through hell to get to heaven. For Jesus, his "hell" was the crucifixion itself. But it is also taught that Jesus literally went to hell, not because of his guilt, but to literally set souls free who were trapped there.
3. I've read "The Way of the Pilgrim" as mentioned by Jonathan, and have to say it is one of the greatest spiritual works ever written, right up there with the Bible. I encourage everyone to buy a copy and read it. It's a demonstration of how "The Jesus Prayer" can be a very powerful practice in one's life. Lately, I've felt called to go back to the wisdom of the Jesus Prayer, and was so glad to hear you talk about it. For me, this was confirmation that I need to get back to that practice.
4. In regards to prayer, a Catholic Polish nun known as St. Faustina, who lived in Poland right before the outbreak of WWII, is one of the most important saints to learn about and follow at this point in time in world history. Jesus himself gave her a new way to pray the Rosary, where it's basically praying the Jesus Prayer for the entire world, as well as yourself. This new way of praying the Rosary is known as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There is an American Shrine of Devine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts that broadcasts this chaplet everyday on RUclips at 3 pm Eastern time. I would encourage everyone to get to know more about this prayer and St. Faustina, as it's a real blessing.
5. Communion. There is the literal, physical practice of communion that is commonly done by Orthodox and Catholic churches, involving the wafer and the wine. But there is deeper meaning and purpose of "communion" that is taught by the saints, and that is union with God, or Devine Union. Of the two, the second is a far, far more important form of communion. While you don't have to choose between the two, the material form of communion is the symbol of the spiritual Devine Union. You can engage in the material practice without ever encountering for feeling the spiritual equivalent, but once a soul enters into Devine Union, which is entirely spiritual, you will finally be able to see the material world for what it really is, and truly understand the love and mercy of God.

"The goal of the mystic is not simply a transient ecstasy; it is a permanent state of being in which the person’s nature is transformed or deified. This state is frequently spoken of as a spiritual marriage involving God and the soul. This unitive life has two main aspects. First, while the consciousness of self and the world remains, that consciousness is accompanied by a continuous sense of union with God, as Teresa of Ávila clearly shows in discussing the seventh mansion in The Interior Castle. Brother Lawrence wrote that while he was at work in his kitchen he possessed God “in as great tranquillity as if I were upon my knees at the Blessed Sacrament” (The Practice of the Presence of God, chapter 4). Second, the spiritual marriage is a theopathic state: the soul is felt to be in all things the organ or instrument of God. In the unitive life Mme Guyon says that the soul “no longer lives or works of herself, but God lives, acts and works in her.” In this state the mystic is able to engage in manifold activities without losing the grace of union. In the words of Ignatius of Loyola, the mystic is “contemplative in action.”
6. On Jesus becoming the serpent: as strange as it sounds, this symbolism is very important. Moses actually made serpent made of bronze, mounted it on a pole, and used it as a means of healing those Israelis who had been bitten by serpents. It's referenced briefly in the Book of Numbers, chapter 21.

A crumb of the Host, a sip from the cup wetting your tongue for the fullness of Jesus to be present. Let concerns for diet or health not be an impediment. One or the other can be taken for full communion. The most important thing in receiving is believing, and wanting to be in union. Perhaps that decision hasn't been made in the heart to identify with a particular Faith for fear or doubt or wanting to remain neutral or open to exploration. So, wait for it. It's a journey no one can rush you on. You will *know* when you desire nothing else. Love and prayers.

As a Baptist, I've really only recently come to see the significance of the sacraments.This conversation was helpful and the honesty in it is really refreshing. Dear Tammy, your eagerness to find the truth is really moving and I'm sure that God will lighten your path. As a Greek Orthodox who hasn't always been religious, I can confirm that Orthodox church is a hospital for the soul. I think that it would be useful for you to find a priest and confess, that's the first step. Confessing to a priest it's not the same thing as confessing to a friend. It is often that people being reluctant to open up to a "stranger" they think that talking to a friend can replace this procedure. It can't. As regards the Communion, you can't get no harm by it. Just consider this. In Orthodox church, whatever is left inside the holy grail, after all attendants have received their spoon of bread and wine (Body and Blood), the priest is obliged to consume it himself. And the same thing happens in times of pandemic, in hospitals with highly contagious diseases and so on. So, the Orthodox priests should have been a professional group with a very high rate of morbidness and a low rate of life expectancy, but this doesn't happen. There was even an island in Greece where the Greek state would send the lepers. Same thing there, there was a healthy priest who served the community of lepers for a decade and never got Ill.
Jonathan and Tammy, while I admit I had little interest in the spiritual before; I have recently had, what I can only explain as, a religious experience (in the way Jordan generally references) and since then I have come to greatly enjoy these conversations. Please keep having them.

I have been very sick lately and also off gluten (after watching some of Mikhaila's videos). But I've been meaning to talk to the priest about it. Worst case scenario I'm sure I could receive the precious blood instead, or a gluten free wafer.

Tammy have you considered attending Orthodox Divine Liturgy, and becoming a catechumen? Because the church is the hospital for the soul. It sounds like having a bit of structure and not having to rely on your self so much would be extremely beneficial. Just a thought and God bless you.
i think she’s already attending a Roman Catholic parish, although i know the RC and Orthodox communions are divided on some issues but have more in common…the faith of the first millenium Church, than what divides them (papal supremacy and politics, differing emphases on original sin, the procession of the Holy Spirit, the role of Mary, differing emphases on divine judgement)…Christians need to work together for thr greater good
Have you considered attending an Eastern Catholic liturgy and becoming a catechumen?

As a Believer confessing the Apostle’s Creed and in communion with Christ, Tammy you ARE VERY MUCH welcome to receive communion at any Anglican Church in the ACNA (North America). I believe it’s the Roman Catholic Church requires you have been formally “confirmed” by the Roman Catholic Church. So the Anglican Church receives members of Roman Catholic Church to be in communion, but not the other way around.

I think it’s so interesting that God brought forth the first Eve out of the body of the first Adam. Whereas the second Adam, Jesus, was brought forth from the body of the second Eve, our Blessed Mother Mary.

The important thing about the Jesus prayer is that you have a spiritual father, a man experienced in faith, preferably a monastic, who helps you progress and remove potentially dangerous stuff in your prayer and spiritual life. All the saints encourage everyone, not just the monks, to try and say the prayer ceaselessly. Some saints, like St Ephraim the Syrian, a great 4th century saint, say that saying the prayer is more important than breathing. This might be too much of a burden for beginners in the faith, so that's why the guidance of the spiritual father is so necessary. As Jonathan says, constant prayer is what we are fundamentally aiming to. Its important to realize that we do not only pray with our minds, but with our whole being - bodies included - so everything we do must fundamentally be aimed to God and must participate in Him and be transfigured by Him.

The Eucharist supersedes mater and human understanding. I know people with all kinds of problems digestively and bodily that are not affected negatively by the eucharist. Also, there is much layered symbology to so many things within Christianity, and yet, this is not only typology, but also bound up in reality. Christs saving work, is not merely “and this is how it helps me think about and deal with my own suffering”. The whole point is missed if we do not see that we must be baptized into his suffering and be risen up to newness of life. It is tangible and it is not just about how we think. It is a changing from death to life. God bless the Petersons in their pursuit of Truth. Which is…. Who is… Christ Jesus, the God-Man.
