It is that deep. You’re right. Stevie actually said “I didn’t do that well in school. I can’t write poetry. The only way I have to express myself is through my guitar.” He is telling her he loves her and also describing her and her fiery personality.

It's crazy, I know exactly what's coming, each note, all of Stevie's expressions, how he cradles 'Lenny' and it's never old. love this guy so damn much. Some journalist talking to Stevie said there are no words to Lenny. Stevie said "There's words all over it." truth.

You are absolutely right. He did write other love songs for other people, but THIS, this is the greatest gift. I’d take it over any amount of money. The guitar he was playing on this song was Lenny. The night she gave it to him, he sat at the end of the bed and wrote her that song. It really reflected their tumultuous relationship. Donna G❤️

I agree. I was a teen to early 20’s when he was popular. He was clearly known for his guitar far more than his voice. He didn’t just play notes. There was a very clear message/emotion behind those notes. Not many guitarists have the ability to communicate multiple emotions through his art.

The blues are my favorite music. I thank black Americans for inventing it an bringing it to the world through their pain.
Blues is about pain an distress. The strange thing is when you’re down & out listening to the blues will help you get through yours.
Thank you for your thoughtful reactions. I hope I get to shake your hand someday.

Stevie and DT did various live performances throughout the world, including tours in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. In addition to normal concerts, the band has performed in both supporting and headlining roles at festivals such as the Reading Festival in 1983 and Montreux Jazz Festival in 1985, as well as many other performances. They performed at the Lorelei open-air theatre in Germany broadcast on Rockpalast, which had a television audience of an estimated forty-one million. They played sold out concerts at the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and other venues. And Lenny was his ex-wife. He never played this song again after the divorce.

You totally got it, the arts, and especially music can express emotions that you cannot do with words, no matter how good you are with them. Music can move in subtle movements that affect the way you feel in an order that the artist wishes to convey.

When I'm down or discouraged or even foul tempered for some foolish reason, when I'm feeling sad for no reason or a valid reason, frustrated or just tired of myself, when the 'Blue Meanies" come a callin'... then it's time to wallow in the waves of Stevie Ray's soothing river of soul. The best cure for the blues IS the Blues. RIP, King SRV, and thank you for the gift of yourself. ☮️to all.

I noticed you've listened to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan and led Zeppelin.
I'd like to suggest the band that I think you'll absolutely love. The Allman Brothers band.
The album that I'm sure 12 out of 10 people would say to listen to is their live album called "at Fillmore East".
There are many songs I could throw out there from that album but the one I think I'll choose is, "Whipping Post".
There's a reason this album is in the library of Congress and considered the greatest live album ever produced, especially in the blues rock genre.
Led by two master guitarists, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, the band also has Gregg Allman on Hammond B3 organ and vocals, Berry Oakley on bass (ex guitarist), Butch trucks and jai Johansson on drums.
Accompanying them at this concert at the Fillmore East in New York City was their good friend on harmonica, Thom Doucette.
    This suggestion comes guaranteed! 😁

So please enjoy the ride, love yourself and love the times. God Bless. P.S. SRV could not read music nor knew about chords (his own words). Just happened upon your reaction. I agree with you - oh those blues! If you want to see two of the very best guitarists EVER having the time of their lives, tune into Stevie Ray with Jeff Beck "Going Down" - October 28, 1989 - in Chicago. I believe that they were on tour together, taking turns being the lead guitar at each stop along the way. Jeff has said in interviews that playing with Stevie always brought out the best in him - that's a lot of praise from a true master of his craft.

SRV did make to arena sized venus and then the helicopter crashed from a large arena show shared by Eric Clapton and other greats in Wisconsin including his brother Jimmie. This crash not only took Stevie's life but many of the road crew of Eric Clapton. His brother Jimmie Vauhan was slated to take that particulr helicopter flight instead of Stevie, but Stevie talked him into letting him take the first instead of his brother, and as fate would have it, Jimmie lived and Stevie died in the crash. Bizzare twist of fate. Clapton went to the crash site to identify the peices. It took years for his brother Jimmie to come to grips with it. It's all in the biography of SRV and in Clapton's auto-biograpy.

SRV did in fact do his share of big gigs. I'm not all that far from Denver, and know that (even though I never saw him) he played Red Rocks Ampitheater, and there is a version of "Life Without You" that was recorded at the now demolished McNichols Arena, that appeared on a reissue of "In Step," as well as being issued as single. (As one in recovery myself, his talk in the middle about his substance issues really gives that performance a personal meaning to me). McNichols was THE arena in Denver prior to the advent of the Pepsi Center. Hope this sheds a little light on a great man, my friend.

The story of the guitar goes something like he found it and fell in love with it. He wasn’t famous or making big money yet so couldn’t afford it. Lenny got the band together and they all pitched in and gave it to him for his birthday. Therefore he named the guitar Lenny and wrote that song the night he got it. I think it is a cool little side note

one of the reasons he sweats so much on stage is that when you're locked in emotion your body sweats. i have had times when i'm really expressing myself playing gutiar and lose myself and after i feel sweaty even though I'm just sitting in a chair. it's some kind of hormone that's released that makes you feel good, kinda like what gives you shivers when listening to something. and he's sweating like crazy in every performance i seen, which just shows how much he's always locked in. if you don't have feel in what you're playing your body won't sweat like that. im sure its also hot on stage but that amount of sweat is different. he's always drenched

SRV was very close to headlining shows with Double Trouble when he was killed in that unfortunate helicopter crash in 2000. His last show was opening up for Eric Clapton at the ampitheater in East Troy, Michigan. It was a hard venue to travel from once the show was over, so many musicians chartered helos to fly out. Eric Clapton chose not to go with three of his fellow crew members on the helo chartered for him, so SRV was offered the empty seat which he gladly accepted..... the rest, as they say, is history. So, SRV was right on the precipice of becoming a major league headlining draw at the concert venues that he and his band spent the past years paying their dues for. I am 65 years old and I regret not seeing him perferm live. There is a great book out on him entitled Texas Flood, c 2019. A great read, thanks for reacting.

    Hey MMB…
This is the fifth “reaction’ I’ve sat thru w / u. u got my script now. I think, make that, I believe, that u might just get SRV the way I have, since ‘78. I hadda pull over first time I heard SRV on the radio, headed idk where. None of that matters anymore. It only time-stamps the when, and it was a different world after that. See, I had heard “the best” guitarists, and had it all straight. Then SRV happened.
I truly believe he had a talent like none other. Yeah, I know, he been playin since seven yrs. old, and practiced for ridiculous amounts of time, too. But still, the emotions he evokes with those six strings is like none other I’ve ever heard, and I think I’m gettin close to have heard most guitarists, if not just only the best of them. To this day, none comes close to his playin.
I also believe he’s up there among the best vocalists, especially in the Blues genre, and I must again emphasize, I believe I’ve heard most, if not just only the best. To give examples and comparisons would fill a page, or maybe even two.
Back to u; I’m thankful to find another person whom I believe has as much respect, and love, for the man as much as his music… maybe. u gotta be the judge of that. He had my vote, and my heart a long, long time ago - I mean, forty-five years… been long time man.
I serenaded my wife to “Pride & Joy,” when we were dating. I still write, “to my Sweet Lil Thang,” in my anniversary cards I give her every year, and she still loves it cause I do it, even tho we soon be married forty years.
It’s like u’ve stated on several occasions, “u either feel it, or u don’t.” I felt it way back then… I still feel it when I hear him today,
Thanks for continuing to do that thing u do. You make an old man’s heart warm up, to see that a youth such as yourself, can be reached by his instrumental and vocal talents, even in the musical environment that offers so much; where we don’t even know if that was their real, or electronically influenced voice; or was that them playing, or a synth track…
Stevie always kept it REAL, but u never hear a sour note, guitar or vocal, in a time before any of this computer generated stuff was available. I don’t believe he would have used it, even if it had been.
So, keep on keepin it REAL brother.
(Yeah, I’m white… so what - from Alabama too, and…)?
    later

If someone writes a song like this for you, they will literally follow you to the gates of Hell. Some of the most soulful, and savage blues licks I've ever heard. Also, this particular guitar tone Stevie was working here is just about as beautiful as a Fender Strat can sound. In the room it would have been truly monstrous. Freely able to dial back the volume and sound almost completely clean, or crank it and torch the faces off the audience.
