    Really helpful video, Here's my issue. I am still having trouble hearing sound as I play from my midi keyboard. I have a Yamaha Motif 8, Focusrite Scarlet 2i4 (1stGen) and I'm using Cakewalk. Just recently I had a driver issue so I had to reinstall Cakewalk, update all drivers for it and the interface, and the keyboard. NOW, it won't playback unless I have the keyboard plugged in the computer by usb. I've NEVER had to use a usb cord because I've got midi cables running to the back of the interface like you said, for the older keyboards, so, 1) why do I need this now and 2) any idea why I cannot hear and record. I was good up until you got to the midi setup part. Sorry, its so long but I'm having a hard time understanding what is going INTO what and coming OUT of what. Once I get that part, I think I'll be a little clearer. THANKS for the great explanations.

    Good video... I have the Focusrite audio interface as well... love it.
    I noticed that when you inserted your vst instrument you hit a key and the meter moved, proving that the data is going to Cakewalk. But I didn't hear any sound. What do you do to actually hear those sounds? What setting do I adjust to hear?

    • @AudioSorcerer
      @AudioSorcerer  Год назад

      You need to make sure your I/O is all setup properly. It's not completely straight forward. For a virtual instrument, you need an external MIDI controller to trigger the sounds. That can plug into the Focusrite via the MIDI input or for newer controllers they are typically USB and you don't even have to use your Focusrite. Once you have all that in order, as long as the output of the instrument track is routed to the output of your interface that handles your speakers or headphone connections, you should hear the sound. Hope that helps.

    I have my guitar working sweet through my interface and using guitar rig as a vst plugin for my effects and tones. So I managed to record some layered melodies and riffs using 4 guitar tracks. My problem is adding and creating drums for my music. I am no drummer so it’s been a nightmare especially since I am trying to use third party plugins that are free or on trial. Long ass story short I found this midi controller for £10 an alesis qx49. It’s great, with standalone software I can set all sorts of piano and drums presets to my piano keys, and in modo I can use the keyboard to play drums. Awesome but as soon as I try do this within cakewalk and using them as plugins, my midi keyboard won’t allow them on a midi track, and I can’t set the track up as an instrument with my midi keyboard to assign the drums plugins. No matter what I do I just get basic electric keyboard sound from cakewalk. I hope to learn how to set it up properly

    This is very good instruction. I learned some things as I'm starting out with this new version of Cakewalk after using the old for many years and I have the focusrite. At 8:48 I don't know why you said to select WDM/KS because I already have the inputs and outputs on the next screen using ASIO. ? Also at 11:50 you said you don't need to send midi back to the instrument. I have a sound module (synth) hooked up so I do need that to hear it as the tracks are recording midi info not audio waveforms. Lastly, I can't figure out how to get my instruments I have mapped in the MASTER.ins and INSTRMAP.ini files to show as options on each track. In the hold I could select these and they would play the sounds selected rather than what midi channel my keyboard is transmitting on which is what it's doing now.

    • @AudioSorcerer
      @AudioSorcerer  Год назад

      If you want to utilize your keyboards internal sounds, then you will have to record the MIDI data and have it output back to your keyboard and then run an audio cable from your keyboard into your interface. The end result with be an audio track and not a MIDI track.

      What do you have your recording buffer size set to? If it's too low your computer might have trouble handling it. The size moves in increments of 64. Try 256, then 512, and if you have to use 1024. When you get to 512 and 1024 you aren't going to be able to monitor yourself in the headphones because there will be noticeable latency. This isn't necessary the fix to your issue but the first thing I would look at.

    I'm just now trying to get into making music (with very little prior knowledge for terminology and all that stuff) and whatnot and don't really have an audio interface. Is it necessary to get one? Especially if you don't directly record audio into Cakewalk/don't make vocals for songs or stuff yourself. If so, would you also need it if you just took audio that has already been recorded by someone else from another source (ig that's sampling or smth, not sure) and more or less imported it into Cakewalk(not necessarily singing either, just generally sounds ig)?
    I heard the audio quality increases or smth if you do have one, dunno tho. Does the audio you receive at the end, regardless of whether or not it was recorded audio or some preset instrument, affect the end product? Like, is the final audio file gonna sound different if you made it with an audio interface plugged in?
    (Also, could you technically make a "custom instrument" from a single(or a small selection of) sound(s) if you felt like it? That last one isn't really related to the other questions, just curious if or how you could do it in Cakewalk. Or if an entirely different program itself would be required for something like that.)
    Oh btw, do you need an audio interface for a midi controller? Or rather, do you need some kinda specific software/hardware or could you technically just plug your electronic keyboard into your computer and just use that(does it affect quality?)? Also, I'm guessing a midi controller isn't absolutely necessary for music production, but rather just makes it way easier (if you know how to play an instrument ig), right?

    • @AudioSorcerer
      @AudioSorcerer  2 года назад

      I would just answer this simply and say yes you need a audio interface and MIDI controller. Regarding making a custom instrument, you can sample sounds and put them into a sampler plugin. Depending how far you want to take it can get pretty intense. I would say it's not a beginner task.

    • @ComedicalBystander
      @ComedicalBystander 2 года назад

      @@AudioSorcerer Ah alright, ig I'll look into getting an audio interface somewhere in the near future then. Btw, I do have an electronic keyboard that I can just plug into my PC. I don't really have the option to get an audio interface just now, so would it just work out if I plugged it in directly and started using that as a MIDI controller?(tried looking it up online, but couldn't get a concrete answer)
      thanks for the reply, and ig I'll put off that custom instrument thingy till I get the basics down.
