The ending scene is very underrated, considering how heartbreaking and defining it is for Christopher's arc. He threw away his dreams and resigned himself to the bleak and narrow life of a mobster, much like the hallway he's walking through
ade says about how acting, writing, really all Art is about expressing your innermost repressed feelings, on some level he knows she's right. I mean, everyone applauded him. And he rejects the call. To succeed outside the mob, yes, but also to understand himself or grow. Can't wait for the Tony B arc, or Vito arc, where this theme of characters who'd literally rather die than have a healthy, if somewhat mundane peace gets explored further.
Btw the term you’re looking for was an enforcer. Guys like Paulie and Furio are the muscle for the mob whereas other guys are more moneymakers and leaders.
Not really true. Tony is a Caporegime on paper, which is the second highest rank after the boss, but he is also the "de facto" boss. Paulie, Silvio and Pussy are all made men and captains, second to Tony (like he literally said in this episode), all with their own crews loyal to them (even if we don't see much of them yet). They are high ranking all things considered. "The muscle" of the mafia are all soldiers or associates, the latter not even made men yet, bottom of the hierarchy, Christopher being a prime example. He is the one who has to do the dirty work and "kick up" money to the likes of Silvio and Paulie.
@@Gaboxxy96Caporegime is literally captain and it is not the second highest rank after boss, you have underboss and consigliere, then you might have street boss AND THEN it’s the captains/caporegimes.
Fun fact- the actor that plays Furio is a big fan of fine art. In a random gallery he found a painting and paid $1000 for it. It turned out to be a painting of one of the old masters. He sold it for $6 million.
Fun Fact: The actor who plays Furio originally auditioned for the role of Johnny Sack. (the one he meets on the table in this episode with Sal and Paulie)
So many actors would be funny in other roles. Artie's actor auditioned for Tony. Imagine if it was him lol. Silvio's actor also audtioned for Tony and didn't do too bad, but didn't have the intimidation factor i think they wanted. They wrote Silvio for him instead. I believe the same is true for Paulie.
Another fun fact - he's also a painter in real life. Bought a Guercino painting that had been wrongly identified for only $100k+. It's been authenticated and is actually worth upward of $10m.
"GIving the beating, or taking it?" Imagine saying that to Tony Soprano's face, while alone in a room with him, right after telling you he had someone shot just last night.
Richie couldnt or wouldnt stab tony when they have the confrontation in the kitchen. Its a rule in the mob that a made man cant lay hands on another member. Anyone who is violent towards a made member would or should be dealt with very harshly if the rules were being adhered to. A captain like richie stabbing a boss like tony is suicidal for richie. Its not always the case of course. Love your reactions btw very allegorical
The discussion about Melfi's attraction to Tony is good and interesting. I feel like a very basic-level read is that she doesn't want to have sex with him, but the *idea* of him turns her on. Y'all are talking about, "well, she's not attracted to HIM, but she's attracted to the thrill of him?" and maybe that's right, but I don't think that you can really fully decouple that from sexual attraction, right? As for Christopher, I think he has the most interesting arc in the whole series. Y'all will really appreciate it.
I think the reason why Tony would wanna be on the other end of the beating is probably because he WANTS someone to punish him for the way he is acting lately, without facing any repercussions. He wants someone to stop him and teach him a lesson. Because, if he keeps this up without facing consequences for his actions then he won’t achieve any sort of development or progression. We tend to learn from our mistakes after we’ve had someone call us out or punish us for our wrongdoings, so that we can take it as a lesson & don’t repeat it in the future again
I think the intro video talking about walking and driving in different countries may be my favorite part of this whole episode. That was just hysterically entertaining. Not sure why no one honks at me when I'm walking no matter what country I travel to though....
The excellence of this show exists on many levels. Even the small role of Melfi’s therapist is played by a legendary director, film historian, and former confidant of Orson Welles. There are very few minor elements that pass without examination. The dream sequences continue, and get better.
I grew up near where this series is set. One of the reasons I like to watch The sopranos is because, even though we weren't Italian, there is a definite culture to new jersey, and especially in this case North Jersey. That scene with the boat? Not that unusual. Strangely enough, this series makes me homesick
The pre-show talk had me laughing. You guys are so funny. I think I learned more about how fun it would be to travel with you both than about the Sopranos episode!...🙂
The Amsterdam story reminds me of the time I met a Serbian girl there. I still chuckle about it. She kept making fun of so many locals having Van in their last names. I had to ask her last name and yes it did end in ić. She didn't see what was so funny about that.
13:30 - Most American mental health counselors see a mental health specialist (last I checked, 84%). Most professional associations for mental health counselors recommend that counselors seek counseling themselves, as this provides a healthy space to process job-related stress. Police officers and other healthcare workers encounter some of the same workplace stressors and should also consider attending counseling. Unfortunately, police culture in America still somewhat stigmatizes therapy, and many officers remain untreated. This contributes to high law enforcement suicide rates (54% higher than the general public).
Challenging the Russian on the boat was not a masochistic self loathing thing. It was an establishing a dominance tough guy thing over the Russian. Like what are you going to about it little man.
It sounded like the replay speed of this episode was accelerated a bit or compressed. I hope it was just for copyright not how you guys experienced it in the viewing. Am I wrong? For me it seemed to really detract from the experience 🤷♂️
I do have a problem with Dr. Melfi's attraction to Tony. It feels like the main writer David Chase wanted to give a reason to continue her therapy with Tony, but it feels wrong, too unprofessional and melodramatic.
What a generation... "if he's cheating, she should be cheating too" (two wrongs don't make a right). Also when you get married you take an oath, you can't just leave because you think you deserve better, you should've thought about that before making a vow (till death do us part). She knew very well who Tony was and who she was marrying (the soon to be boss of North Jersey). First off, men and women are not the same... especially in the '90s in the Italian Mob world. Let's not act like this relationship is on equal footing either. He holds all the leverage: both financially and power-wise.
