Tamariki undergoes a major refit with new keel, engine, refurbished mast, new furler, and paint job taking 7 months. This video is a documentary of the work.
I really enjoyed watching that. Just the right amount of time on each stage so I can see it coming together all in one go. We are trying to get a 3 hour weather window to paint our ketch!! never mind 3 days... I think you've done a great job on a beauty of a vessel.
Thanks Rodger , I had pondered about it thinking it could attract moisture, maybe, but on deck I may try it. It proberly sand ok paint etc I rebuilt just Jane and know what you have been through it's fun and rewarding when a lot of good kiwi boats go down hill quickly over the old money thing thanks
Thanks for the video, very interesting and well crafted job, looks great. Amazing after 30 years and keel bolts look new. You mind if I ask why was the Keel modified? That would be better for larger sails but isn't it a compromise in draft and shallow waters? Did you get bigger sails?
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. The original keel was a centreboard and practically it became difficult to use with growth etc on the board. This meant that sailing upwind was very inefficient. Also the steel box section for the centre plate needed maintenance even if the bolts were ok, so the owner thought it you;ld be the right time to put a full fixed keel on , having compared his own performance to that of friends yachts. Losing low draft is in practice not a real issue cruising the South pacific. No changes in rig were made so she carries the same sails, she now rolls slower and goes upwind higher and faster. cheers Roger
Peter designed the new keel so the displacement was the same and the centre of gravity was still the same fore and aft, just lower down, so no more water on the foredeck than before.
Really inspiring project. You mentioned in the description that you worked 7 months on her. Did you have to work 7 months, full time to get her looking like that, or were you able to work part time to accomplish your goals. Thanks
Peter, the owner worked almost full time, as weather and other appointments dictated. His son helped on weekends and friends at times on large tasks, such as keel gluing and painting. It was a lot of work, but Peter is now sailing around NZ .
Hi love the vids one question with the resin on the keel it looked like you used sanding dust and glue powder mixed , if so the sanding dust do , acts as filler or what thanks
You mr. Mills , are an example of the way a custodian and gentlemen respects his charge ,
Thank you ! ...namaste
Marvelous , great project! Loved the music too! Hope you enjoy for many years. Cheers Warren
Now that is a beautiful boat!
Great video and brilliant job. Really enjoyed this. Now to get back to my 22 footer!
Im thinking about a 22 footer myself. How cramped are they to spend like 10 days on them for summer? I guess more than 2 ppl would be too much?

It won't get any moisture because it is fully encapsulated with epoxy glue :)
Great stuff
one of the most inspirational refits I've ever watched
Thanks - it certainly transformed the sailing performance, and of course improved its motoring with the new engine.
Veri cool proyect, nice vid! Congrats!
Great job, well done!
Wow ! Beautiful boat.
great job and great video. Fair seas and a following wind
Great job on the video and the boat. I am working on my Erickson 27 at the moment, hoping to be done soon.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing :-)
love your work
Very well done good luck!
Great job folks. Have fun on her!

Awesome, can you share the beating angles and speed before and after the mods?
No we didn't specifically measure them, other than being high and faster. I reckon from 110degrees tacking to 90 degrees and 1 knot faster.
Good Jobs. Congratulatios...
now that is craftsmanship :)
I think the saw dust is unnecessary and if anything just reducing the tolerances, making the bond less stable.
Yes I think you are right. It is less dense than epoxy and doesn’t really add anything.
Stunning vessel, good on ya 👍.
Well done, great job. Isnt she now a little deeper than previous, having more water on the foredeck?

Beautiful Boat. Awesome job of squeezing all that into 22 minutes. Who does the song at the end?
Thanks for that - the song is Sailing by Jaymie Gerard. cheers

Yes the sawdust was just a general filler to reduce the amount of glue required
What's a cost breakdown for a project like this look like?
*great*
CREAMORE.TV
