I’ve been watching some of your other videos, and came back to watch number one. Burst out laughing when you said one and a half to 2 years. You guys are absolutely amazing.
10/13/22 I discovered you yesterday at episode 206. The raw emotion of finally taking her out to sea passing beneath the amazing GGB. Love watching a few sailing channels. Especially traditionalists. You epitomize the term. I’ve come to episode 1 to start at your journey’s beginning. I’m happy to be aboard. Thanks for having me along for the ride. Can’t wait. LETS GO!
Me too thankfully production does get better. No really heard a single word of episode one. Luckily I know my way around a boat and knew what they were doing. 😁 I also love the under estimate of how long it will take.
Found you a few years ago and since, longed for every Friday morning to see you’re next ‘hey, join us. But these ‘this was us’ vids just really take us with you on your life journey. Loved them all ,and, those to come. I like the sailing vids but I’m more into the building/technical side. You have a grand mix of both. Few couples are as ‘meant for each other ‘ ads you two. Love ,respect, and stay strong.
I was suggested this page because I follow Bums on a Boat. You folks remind me of my folks. circa 1973, building a post and beam construction home in Minnesota with rough sawn lumber entirely wood heated on a zero budget. I was six at the time. :) Fast forward to 1985, I was the youngest and yearned for the neon lights of the big city, girls that looked like they were in Motley Crue videos, my folks sold that home and built a earth bermed cordwood and masonry home nearby. Now they are aged 91 and 86 respectively, and still live in it. Long live and prosper, Salt and Tar!
So, I saw you guys while I was watching Sailing Spy and I had to look ! Man oh man ! That's truly what you call a passion. I just watched this episode and now, I'm interested in seeing more. I retired from the Navy a bunch of years ago and was an engineer and so, I'm always up for a good building story, no matter what you are building but, you are taking it to another level. Wow !
"1.5 to 2 year project". Bless, so optimistic. Its amazing they felled their own trees to build it. 4 years later still not finished but it's floating at least. Great job. I know it will be worth it
Today I am starting episode number 1. I laughed when you said 2 years. I started a similar project 2 years ago. It's gonna be longer lol. I'm going to binge watch all of them.
You young folks rock! Anything worth having is worth doing yourself and doing it the right way. Congrats. I am so glad I found your channel today! Lots to see and experience as you move forward. The music is fine, by the way! LOL! Peace.
Okay, I came across your last video and started watching it and now I’ve got to watch it all from the beginning. I am simply amazed at your skills. Thanks for sharing your progress.
Just getting to this point in building a boat is a lot of work! Congratulations for taking on such a wonderful project. Funny- I came across episode 36 today and decided to start watching from the beginning. You are a changed man Garret!
I saw you on Calico Skies and came over and checked out your trip North in Mexico. Decided to start from the beginning! Subscribed and it's great to see the start of your build!
I came in on episode 59 with the planking and had to go back to the beginning to understand the enormity of your undertaken.. Let me say this " you are doing and have done an incredible job. I can hardly wait to see you in the water and sailing knowing you are feeking that x100. I am going to now begin watching them all. Be back soon Robert and Tere
Just saw you in Latitude 38. Good for you. After sailing many years in mostly plastic boats, I appreciate the craft and skill that goes into building a wooden boat. I'll just watch and enjoy it through you. Thanks.
Just started watching this morning while looking for something interesting to enjoy on RUclips with my morning tea. I was missing my old S&S 39'-11" design 1728 double planked, bronze fastened, mahogany sloop. A catastrophic injury--shattered my left leg into 34 pieces--forced her sale. Now, after 8 years, I'm investigating building a 24' to 26' wooden trailer sailer to get me back on the water. I was looking at sharpie gaff cutters, like the Flattie 24, when your boat build video #16 popped up and the sweep of that hull just sucked me right in. Y'all have a great dynamic in #16 and video #1 was informative and entertaining. Now I plan to binge watch on my next day off and catch up to your latest videos. Keep up the great work and Godspeed.
Garrett and I were just talking about how cool it'd be to build a sharpie to sail in the back bay of his home town. We've been off the water for almost 3 years I couldn't imagine 8 and with such a debilitating injury! It sounded like you had a very solid one of a kind sloop that had to be hard to let go. Do whatever it takes to get back to the water! There's no better healing than wind filling your sails ~Ruthie
A little late to the start of this party but we just found you! Can't wait to binge watch this amazing endeavour and adventure! And, another big thumbs up vote for your music selection!!
As I watched you creating the shape on your keel I came to think that wooden boat building is carried out one tiring, time consuming job at a time, and is very probably best not thought of in the whole, just by what's at hand to do now, today and tomorrow, till at some point you look back and are well pleased with what you've achieved thus far. You are both really focussed on doing this and your commitment to each other and your project is really quite inspiring and heartwarming.
What dedication. Being a retired carpenter, the patience it took to do your 2 x 12 stacked bevel cuts is very commendable. A beam saw doesn't have the depth, but there must be some kind of saw, even a chair saw set up on a rake to get through the material would work. Maybe that's why I never had the patience to do much finish work.
It's been hard getting the music right. I think there is a lot of play between devices. I've noticed watching on a house hold tv the volume of things is off but on laptops it sounds normal.... hmmm...... Working on it guys! Ruthie
It's your first vid, don't sweat all the grumps. You get a lot better at it real quick. I had to come back and watch ep. 1 just to see what your early expectations were.... !
Eh, I'd prefer more Allman Brothers, but to each their own. I'd put 'Lizbeth Reed against purty munch anything, evah created. but I'm weird like that. Ha
I just sub'd on your very last video and am here at the first episode now and I guess you really started building this 8 years ago? Now that I know you did it and succeeded. What on earth we're you thinking? :) Wow this is gonna be cool watching these knowing where you are now and where you started. And the documenting of it is just too much for some to take on as well and you've been doing it since day one. Crazy. Just need to remember to like each one. Cheers guys.
For all you experts on what wood to use George designed this boat to be built with lumberyard timber. His design theory was get it built it's not a piano
Just found your most recent posting, now I'm starting from the beginning. I've just been reading George Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilder too. Nice coincidence! I'm looking forward to seeing her sail!
OK, I just commented on your latest episode and said I would Binge-watch. I may be a real squeaky wheel five years to late. I worked, some good many years ago, on repairing a wooden yacht so I will be opinionated with no real skill to back up my opinions - but WOW - what a Structural build! (4:10) WAY too late, but Tar, or Salt, whatever her name is, talks so quickly that my aged ear drums can often not make out what she is saying. Captions would help!
Word is spreading on what the two of you are doing .People are talking about you guys even in India it's where I'm at right now .some say you can't do this,,their looking for you to fail. Iv been looking at your work Me I say your doing fine to me your work so far is great ! I look forward to seeing you guys at sea. Best of luck to you. And oh I'm on a 38' sail and love every dam day. Enjoy each other.
Great to see the huge effort and results so far. I suspect that your good attitude and apparent commitment will see it through, ... I'll have a nice cup-o-T and watch #2. Barry M. Australia. PS Built quite a few yachts both racing and charter.
Seven plus years ago, little did Garret know the extent that gaps between each mark within, and the ruler itself would expand when he thought of, "feels like forever" and "a blink of an eye". Such ideas are both neither and one in the same. @5:00
Love the song choices! It’s like striking gold when you find an established channel, where you don’t have to wait to see the progression of the build. Only bad part, you have to watch the time you put into your binge watching! 🤣
And then seven years later they are finally living the dream. Probably good that in the beginning they only envisioned it taking two years. Would a normal rational person take on a seven year project? But they stuck with it. And even remained married. Good on ‘em.
Just found your channel, today, and am excited to see all of your progress! I sincerely hope that the rest of your episodes are not filled with music as it makes it very difficult to hear what you are saying. Especially, when on top of that, when there is another radio playing in the background. Lol! Anyhow, it looks like, based on your later videos, you were a success! Thanks for documenting this endeavor!
Just found your channel when searching for info on boat building. Recently heard about George Buehler and find a few of his designs interesting. I was looking at the Jenny and Juna plans of his, as well as plans from other designers. Looked up the Button 2. That's a nice looking one too. I hope things turn out well along the way. I have some catching up to do with your videos. Looking forward to following along to get some insight on your progress and thoughts of the build and plans. Best of luck to you.
Buehler is quite awesome. We fell in love with his laidback you-can-do-it attitude. His book might be a helpful read and a comical relief! He was really easy to work with and was happy to work with us to modify the Button design into something more our style. All the best to you as well, Daniel :) ~Ruthie
Been watching Acorn to Arribella and Sampson Boat Co. and RUclips suggested your video, so I came over to check it out. I know this video is about 3 years old, but why not start from the beginning? SUB'd and bell rung. I like what I've seen in episode one, so I guess I've got my work cut out for me catching up to the current videos. Hopefully you've learned that copyrighted music demonitizes your videos and have found some background that still allows you to earn toward this project. I'll be watching, and thank you guys for sharing your journey.
love that you built your own sailboat! just found you thanks to waterbornemag. look forward to seeing all episodes... i had a 44' moody 1996 but sold it to build an orphanage in haiti. hope to be on a sailboat again 1 day!
Wow, all off your tools ran on electrical cords! That seems like the Stone Age, compared with the battery powered tools that you are using in July 2020!
All thanks to our followers! It's hard to believe what we managed with old old tools. It's amazing to have the tools we have now!!!! We might've quit hahaha R
Just found you kids (episode 15) while looking around at other Boating videos. Looking forward to catching up on the videos and getting to know you guys ...... I was a carpenter for too many years and helped put a few boats together ..... When I saw that can of "Henry's" I almost swallowed my teeth ...... I can still smell that stuff ..... glad to see there's another "goo king" out there .... Yuck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...................JRW
I am just starting to watch your videos. My first thought is " hmmm looks like he is using standard dimensional lumber that is graded to be used in home building...." I am really hoping your have done your due diligence researching your choice for the sacrifice of cost. Doug fir and hemlock are not first choice for large boat building projects, high water content = warping/cupping/twisting +knots will destroy the integrity of the structure no matter how much epoxy you use. White oak, mahogany and teak are used for a reason I am sure you are aware. I am fascinated and wish you the best.
Oh I think it will be fine in their lifetime. The more suitable timber were used by shipwrights for the last 1000 or so years due in part to the overwhelming resources it took to process any timber whatsoever. If one is to expend the energy to get a piece of wood it is the same energy no matter the species or grade. That being said. A teak purple heart keel will really outlast what they are doing and perform better. This boat really won't live 200 years but neither will this couple so it doesn't have to.
gary kidd in no way do I want to be a naysayer I think this is fantastic watching a dream like this being fulfilled, it is one of those situations where I hope I’m 110% wrong based on what I know.
I have to agree with you Robert, I would not put it in saltwater for sure, the keel would crumbles if exposed to saltwater. even the boats made of the finest materials, with regular haul outs only last so long, it will do fine in the Great Lakes avoiding storms, the temp. of the water and lack of organisms should insure the vessel will last a long time. I have to hand it to them, that is a lot of work and will be awesome when done. Cheers to builders.
Sorry, but I have to disagree. There are many of George Buehler's boats kicking up their heels out on the open ocean. They have a reputation for rugged dependability. I suspect he has forgotten more about boat building than you and I put together will ever know. Get a copy of his book "Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding" and work your way through it. It's a good read and it may just change your mind about how boats should be built. Robert Desrosiers is right though; white oak, mahogany and teak are greatly preferred but very high priced. Doug fir is an acceptable alternative, very similar to Southern yellow pine and both have been used to to build boats that work for a living for a very long time. However, George does specify that Hemlock should not be used under any circumstances.
Hi, just tried to watch you first video but get a message 'This Video is not available', I am trying to watch on my iPad if that makes a difference. Is the video still available?
It depends on which country you are trying to view it in.... We weren't aware of the music copyright laws on youtube when we first started. I may be able to email it to you?? It may be too big a file, let me know if I can help :) R
Late, but perhaps for others who plan to document in a similar fashion, the background music needs to be turned down or the dialogue turned up, or both.
Please just turn the music off completely if you can't get the volume levels correct, its just annoying ! I would rather have the sound of the work going on ! Otherwise great vid and looking forward to the rest, playing catch up :)
Is there any chance you could re edit, bin the music (copyright issues) and insert a key point commentary. Currently showing as an unavailable video. I can only guess the first video is helpful contextually.👍
I’ve been watching some of your other videos, and came back to watch number one. Burst out laughing when you said one and a half to 2 years. You guys are absolutely amazing.

One and a half year project, who believes that, surely. Rewatching and loving it.
Outstanding. Just found your journey. This looks to be most excellent. Subscribed. 💜💯
Started binge watching for the 3 time. It never gets old.
Ah! Thank you David 😊

I’ve come back to the beginning as 48 to 55 were that good I need the whole story! Great entertainment guys
Mr Google put this in my feed this morning, July 12, 2022. I’ve been a Partreon supporter of SnT for years, but this was a delight to see again!
"1.5 to 2 year project". Bless, so optimistic. Its amazing they felled their own trees to build it. 4 years later still not finished but it's floating at least. Great job. I know it will be worth it
Yes, blessed. My 2 year house project took 6, it's just the way of things, no worries.
+2 more years and they are sailing gleefully ♥️

I don't know what it is, but I am hooked on these boat rebuilding adventures. Subscribed and eager to get to watching :)

I’ve only been watching for a day and watched a few episodes and knew I had to find the start and go thru the building of your dream.
A little late to the start of this party but we just found you! Can't wait to binge watch this amazing endeavour and adventure! And, another big thumbs up vote for your music selection!!

Maybe that's why I never had the patience to do much finish work.
great work you guys.
god bless your journey ahead!!!!
It's been hard getting the music right. I think there is a lot of play between devices. I've noticed watching on a house hold tv the volume of things is off but on laptops it sounds normal.... hmmm......
Working on it guys!

It's your first vid, don't sweat all the grumps. You get a lot better at it real quick. I had to come back and watch ep. 1 just to see what your early expectations were.... !
Seriously the best thing is no music. I really want to watch this but will have to pass. The music is just horrible.
984.
you have full control of ze volume on yer machine, no?
This ain't clockwork orange.
heh
Cant disagree more. You dont think a little Zach Brown music goes good with a sailboat build channel??
Eh, I'd prefer more Allman Brothers, but to each their own. I'd put 'Lizbeth Reed against purty munch anything, evah created. but I'm weird like that. Ha
Very cool to see the start of the whole process!
This is so cool. I caught on a year or two ago (probably more) but have never seen the “first” video.
Just started watching. :)

One and a half to two year project.... glad I’m not the only one that has the bad habit of setting “optimistic” schedules.
@5:40 gosh I hate to bust Garretts balls here but...
We never figure in how much time is spent going to the hardware store to buy drill bits, sandpaper, etc
Glad I found this channel. Susanna is almost done and I need more boat! Trying hard not to binge watch this series. Re: audio, no complaints here.

Barry M. Australia. PS Built quite a few yachts both racing and charter.
Exciting to watch
Such quality work. Great!!
Yo this is Parker from Stella’s in Boise. Holy shit you weren’t kidding when you said you built this from the ground up!!
Hello from LA!
Seven plus years ago, little did Garret know the extent that gaps between each mark within, and the ruler itself would expand when he thought of, "feels like forever" and "a blink of an eye". Such ideas are both neither and one in the same. @5:00

Is this a George Beuhler design. I like his design ideas. Congratulations on the work you have done since so far..
The yacht looks beautiful
i dig the tunes helps tell who you are
amazing video!!
Nice video 👍
yep came in at EP 59,so time for a binge watch

Where did you learn what you wanted in a boat exactly, did you grow up with these boats around? And where did you learn ship construction?
Awesome:)
Good work.

Hey guys, I know this goes back quite a ways but where do I find the video of how you guys chose that boat design and what your thoughts were?
Where did you find the plans of the boat?

White oak, mahogany and teak are used for a reason I am sure you are aware. I am fascinated and wish you the best.
Yeah. Will be interesting in a few days when they show it in the water......
How have I only come across this now. Wow
Better put the kettle on... gunna be a long one
had to come start from the start again
zee old sound is not the Georgie Best? still class x

I'm a diesel mechanic and welder,,,this seems impossible!i would have to weld an aluminum one together maybe lol
It may be too big a file, let me know if I can help :)

.👍
Just curios, where did you get the knowledge of boat building. watching you work with wood this is not the first thing you have built.
Late, but perhaps for others who plan to document in a similar fashion, the background music needs to be turned down or the dialogue turned up, or both.
Cement/concrete is porous. Curious how that is going to pan out.
The porosity is not a problem but repairs are.
"One and a half to two year project"...ROFL...Try for a seven year project!!
"what we expect to be a 1,5 to 2 year project"
Boy that did not age well. But great project nonetheless!
MUSIC TOO LOUD. CAN'T HEAR COMMENTARY.
I'm trying to make out what's being said, can we lose the music when you're talking? thanks
Lol. 1.5 to 2 year project.
i wish you would make your background music lower in volume, its so distracting!
Great but can you turn the music down?
I agree, music in any video sucks.
Turn up the music. Not kidding. Just trying to counter some of the neg anti tune posts.
Hahahaha Thanks ClayZ :D
Please just turn the music off completely if you can't get the volume levels correct, its just annoying ! I would rather have the sound of the work going on ! Otherwise great vid and looking forward to the rest, playing catch up :)
The music is fine. Get over it. Be prepared to be anoyed.
Hang in there it gets better. ha
Is there any chance you could re edit, bin the music (copyright issues) and insert a key point commentary. Currently showing as an unavailable video. I can only guess the first video is helpful contextually.👍
Completely agree!
You gave me a great idea about commentary so let me work on it.
Thanks Norman!
Ruthie
It's unavailable from mobile phones. I guess because of copyright thing. Great video! But may be with no music it'd be even beter! Keep going
yeah... sorry but thanks for the feedback
Ruthie

Would have loved to watch the whole video, but the music is too loud, I can't hear a thing you're saying

I can't hear the comments made, because of the godam music.
I agree - music way too loud, which is a pity
But good music!
