This just might be my favorite video of yours yet!😉 Love how it turned out and thanks again for having me! Can't wait to see how this all pans out for Chris and I wish him the best with it all!
What confuses me is if a sealed game in near mint condition sells for $100 yet when graded sells for $500 who in their right mind would buy the graded version? Just buy it for $100 & if you want to be weird & have it graded just grade it yourself for $50.
The whole world of sealed/graded games is a mystery to me, but I can appreciate that some buyers have the money to let others do the heavy lifting on sealed and graded stuff and they are content to just buy the best graded ones. My understanding is that sealed collectors are looking for the highest grade possible, and they may buy a game thinking it's a higher grade than it actually is.
You get into the nitty gritty world of extreme nuance. If we say "near mint condition", in layman speak that could mean anywhere from 9.0-9.6 A or A+. eBay photos only go so far with this, so you definitely can spend your time buying multiple copies of games, evaluating them, potentially returning them, etc. OR, you pay the premium to have someone else already do this all for you. For many people it doesn't matter if there is a creases here, scratch there, etc, but for some people, it does matter. The odds of a raw $100 copy turning into the $500 graded copy are very low. That's where the delta between prices exists. I know you used $100 and $500 as an example, but that type of premium is an outlier. The $100 game might be like $200-$250 to get yourself a graded NM copy, and only $300+ if you're actually in the highest grade ranges. (9.6 A+ and better). So yea, you can either spend money to get exactly what you want, or spend your time trying to do it yourself (and get it cheaper). It's the same as game hunting for unsealed stuff. Sometimes hunting is fun and sometimes it's fun to just buy exactly what you want.
It's not 50 bucks to grade, anything. And it really depends where you live. The last game I graded cost me around 150 with shipping, through VGA, and it took over 4 months to get back.
The reason prices tend to go higher than ungraded is due to buyer confidence. People are willing to spend a little more to get a game in the condition they want, without having to buy a few ungraded copies and send them off personally, which comes with the risk of not getting the grade you want/expect. There's no magic here other than people balancing opportunity cost with supply. :)
I genuinely don’t understand the appeal of graded games, or why people pay a premium for sealed games, but it is fascinating and I’m curious to see the process play out as you guys document it. 😎 👍

It’s good to see CGC getting in the game. Wata is shady for sure. They recently graded a reproduction Rondo of Blood (PC Engine) as new original…. I never understood grading things other than cards since you can still see the whole card. The gaming stuff if still sealed will eventually have problems like leaking capacitors which naturally degrade over time. But I will definitely sell sealed games to people who want them. I use the money to buy stuff I want for myself. So I do appreciate people who collect sealed stuff and I’ll gladly take their money and if their happy, then it’s a win win! I will say that I recently opened 3 sealed Atari Jaguar games I found at a thrift store for $2.49 each! (Since I finally found a Jaguar at my local gaming store that I traded a bunch of common stuff for) Surprisingly many of the Jaguar games are not that much more expensive to buy sealed than to buy CIB or even loose!
Reminds me of a few years ago when a colleague of mine said that he had some Magic the Gathering cards in a box that he had laying around. This was the exact same conversation that we had, it was a $2,000 collection then, but it's worth $35,000 now. I am forever grateful that I was able to get the cards as they allowed me to fill out my collection and build some awesome decks that I always wanted to build. However, I have, as of late, felt empty inside about the deal. These cards, like Theseus and his ship, are not from the same hull. Yes, I had a Timetwister when I was six and traded it for the X-men Apocolypse action figure. The card doesn't have that emotional connection to me, it was a business transaction. Are we all destined to fall out of love with that which we purchase as we're older? Is the value of nostalgia not linear, but exponential? Sealed anything seals the McGuffin away, it makes the thing no longer utilitarian but a token of it's original form and function. Like me with the cards, I bought them and sealed them away. Funny you should ask that - it’s something I plan to explore when we grade the games in a pretty fun way. I won’t share that right now, but it’s in the works. Also, we have an interview with a professional coin grader recorded (he gets games graded as well) and it was fascinating to learn about the training required to grade a coin.
