    I just finished building a ProArt system with dual 4080s. Being a Mac user for the last 20+ years and a PC user before that, it was all still familiar, but I can say that I've gotten spoiled with Apple's attention to detail and ease of use. Open the box, plug it in, install some software and go. Beautiful interface and polished snappy software. I can be up and creating in under an hour when buying a Mac. This build however is all about 3D processing so my hand was forced. Initial tests are 14x the render speed compared to my M1 Ultra. I'm still fiddling with the setup to get things where I want them. Trying out Linux and Windows 11. Both have their own unique set of headaches. I started with Linux but just ran into a rather large problem that made me give Windows a run. I thought it would be good to have both going anyway. I'm glad there are folks out there that like to fiddle with custom builds, I'm just confirming to myself that I am not one of them. Maybe my tune will change after I can get some actual creating done on the thing.

    • @elissitdesign
      @elissitdesign 2 месяца назад +1

      What 3D work are you doing? Most 3D renders are centered around GPU. I use both Mac and custom PC for 3D and video. Side note; what motherboard did you get to fit dual 4080s and case?

    • @edit-your-mind
      @edit-your-mind 2 месяца назад +6

      @elissitdesign I'm editing in FCP and doing VFX for film and television. Maya, Blender, Unreal and Nuke. Been getting 3D things done on the MAC but wanted a faster rendering system for doing final render. For editing, nothing can touch FCP for performance, ease of use and getting into and staying in the flow. In my opinion/experience any way.
      I'm using the exact same board Gerald used here and the same video card, just two of them. The only hitch with it is that the main PCIe slot goes from 16 to 8 when you occupy the second slot. Both slots are 5.0 though. Took a chance going this route and it seems to have worked although I have no real idea if a single 4090 running at 16x would perform better. I just know that it was more expensive. I'm using a Silverstone rack mount case and Corsair 1500W PSU. No water cooling, just a huge heatsink and enough fans to probably require airport clearance. I think my bang for $ is pretty good. If I had a better budget I would probably have gone SuperMicro and two 4090s or A6000s. Also wanting to be in Linux all the time on this thing. Windows is the worst! Linux does come with its own issues of course.

      @@edit-your-mind Very impressed that you had the guts to attempt a build coming from Mac after so many years. There's no way I would try that hahaha. Little side note, I totally agree with you about FCPX. On any of the new macs with solid specs, nothing can come close. Resolve is starting to get there but the interface and magnetic timeline of FCPX are game changers in my opinion. Forget Premiere. Good luck with the new PC!

    • @edit-your-mind
      @edit-your-mind 2 месяца назад

      @@ChrisA2617 Don't get me started on Adobe LOL!
      Resolve is a very technically capable program and it runs in Linux so I've got it on this new machine. Will likely chuck a decklink in the last slot and use this thing for colour timing projects when it's not batch rendering. Now back to the Linux Mint forums to see if I can find a solution to my problem. Everything was fine last week then autoupdate killed me.

No matter what I threw, it ate lol. I love Windows 7 but Linux Mint runs the fastest. Ever since, I went to Macbook Pro 2011/Mac Mini M1, (Currenty running Mac Studio M1 Max & MBP M1P ) I haven't gotten back to building in ages since 2010/2011 exactly. Gerald, are you using DaVinci Resolve Studio or Free Version? Also, make sure you switch on iGPU Quicksync in the BIOS because without that you going to leave a lot of performance on the table. Intel iGPU has better hardware encoders and decoders than RTX4090. I have the same setup and iGPU is off by default on this motherboard.

  • @PhillipRPeck

    You can leverage the integrated graphics on the 14900K in Resolve and Premiere Pro (Intel Quick Sync) as well that could speed up workflows with h.264/h.265 footage. You have to enable a setting in the BIOS and also in Resolve preferences to tell it to use both the GPU and the iGPU

    I built a proart system with Intel chip recently and it’s been to MicroCenter 4 times to be rebuilt from hardware failures. Every time it works fine one day and then suddenly on boot the next day it hangs at boot and the memory is toast.
    I hope you don’t have the same issues I’ve had.

    BTW, the radiator should be mounted on the top and not the side of the case because you want to use gravity to assist the coolant to circulate back to the pump/water block (the pump is in the waterblock). By placing the radiator vertically, you'll create air bubbles in the radiator which will impede flow and will cause gurgling noise.

    What a serendipity coincidence. I just received almost identical system yesterday. Same case, motherboard cooler but with a 4090 in ;) can I ask if you can test the thunderbolt ports with a fast usbc drive. I don’t seem to be able to get faster than 950mbps read and write from them. Front usbc same drive 2000mbps read and write. Not sure if it would be different with a thunderbolt drive. Appreciate your step by step and any tuning tips would be awesome

    • @rishihara

      Your drive is most likely a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, which will get 20Gb/s on the front panel (also 3.2 Gen 2x2) but will only get 10Gb/s on Thunderbolt. If you use a Thunderbolt drive on the Thunderbolt port your speeds will be much faster.

    Thank you for doing this video. I have all the parts sitting on the shelf ready for my next high-end PC build. The only component I have from the ProArt brand is 'that' motherboard. I will have an NVIDA 4090 Founders Edition, 128gb of G.Skill DDR5 memory (5600), two WD Black M.2, 4T, M.2 Drives. a Thermaltake 1200W PSU with the 12-pin GPU power connector, A couple of 6T Hard Drives, a Corsair 5000D Airflow case (black version of course), and it will be a custom water-cooled build (just the CPU for now, since I don't want to ruing the 4090 FE aesthetics). I will then use Davinchi Resolve 'remote' to offload the renders and RUclips uploads. It will be the best build I have ever done on my Chanel, since I already have a 10g home office network and NAS server in-place. Oh, I almost forgot, it will have a 'lot' of ProArt themed RGB.

      Yeah, ram is so cheap I can't imagine building a pc worth over a thousand dollars and going for only 32. Even 64 isn't that much. I understand with a macbook where you need to spend like $5000 for a decent ram and storage spec but on pc ram is super cheap.
      I am thinking of building a pc this month with the same cpu but maybe an ITX form factor.
      ITX boards only get 2 ram slots so I'd max it out with 96GB of ram.

    Gerald, I think you've interviewed Gamers Nexus. Have you thought about seeing if they will give you a care package of one of their Build Mats.
    If I could afford the import tarifs into the EU I would love to buy a bunch of Gamers Nexus kit.
    The other person I would have approached is De8aurer whose company is behind Thermal Grizzly & makes a bunch of contact frames, delidders and lapping tools for Intel processors. Especialy usefuk is their Carbon Nanotube based Carbonaught. Again given the context there kit could serioualy improve your Intel processor especially with a liquid cooling solution through them.
    I think it was De8aurer who took the latest intel 9 series KS golden sample to a little over 9Ghz on LN.
    The only other thing is back in the day
    I built my first video editing system on a 1929x 1st Gen threadripper using 128Gb of screened & Binned Samsung DDR4.
    But according to Actual Hardware Overclocking the current best source is SK Hynix and he has a spreadsheet of the bins & frequencies to look for

    The stupid thing is even this rig will not scrub Sony A1 8K 4:2:2 10bit files smoothly. Nvidia and Intel really need to sort out 4:2:2 decode support.
