Semi related to the topic, and was reminded of this being seeing Cereal Guy in the vid, probably the weirdest experience I've had playing rivals workshop was playing against someone who only had Cereal Guy installed and quit after I took one stock off of them
For what it's worth, I do reckon there's people who'd appreciate you having a look at all those wacky traffic signs and the crazy stuff they get up to. :P
as such people, I 100% agree! I think they're some of the more fascinating hidden characters in the workshop, just due to their eldritch, glitchy nature. I'd like to see just how many of them are out there.
I would LOVE to have breakdown of them cause they're so unique. And yeah I get the appeal of hiding the info on them for the mystery but it can be a bit annoying when you want to play them. Also thanks @ArtistofSeer for having them written cause I could not figure out how to spell berma from the video at 14:53.
Ah! Two of my darling little moveset experiments are here! So honored to have made it to the title of "among the weirdest" twice! It makes me very happy though to see specifically Roxey and Intellivesion Running Man on the list! They're longtime favorites of mine - Roxey showed me early on how much the limits of Rivals, and really platform fighters as a whole, could be broken. And Intellivesion Running Man is the single best "sprite rip" fighter I know of, really feeling more like a stylistic Game and Watch type character than anything else! Perhaps an unusual suggestion, but ZTStyle, the creator of Intellivesion Running Man and his stage, I believe is a massively underlooked creator in the scene. They've made some really bizarre yet innovative stuff, including an entire port of a bootleg Peanuts game! I think they'd be a fascinating creator to take a deep dive into their Workshop works!
Whenever I talk about awesome workshop characters, I tell my friends about Venom SST, it's one of the most fun characters in a platform fighter I've ever played :D
The scary sign squad (what I'm calling them now) are genuinely so cool when trying to discover what they do. Genuinely experimenting with them makes me go "wtf" with everything I do but I still feel like I'm playing a platform fighter. I think that's really what I consider "peak weird character"; not saying that the extremely gimmicky ones like Phasmo dude are bad, those do have the biggest potential to be really fun and unique but they're a bigger task to perfect for both the creator and the player. Anyway, agreed with the video on the scary sign squad but also I see the potential in "characters with the weirdest concepts but translate perfectly as a platform fighter". Basically anything that comes close to Minecraft Steve from Ultimate where almost everything is both 1:1 but still plays and feels like a normal platform fighter character.
Okay so 1. I would LOVE to see more vids in this format, including more "weird characters" vids like this. 2. I'm super down to learn more about these haunted signs! 3. I think my favorite, looking at this video, was probably the Venom SST. As soon as you said what the source of the character was, I started to immediately pick up on all the references from when I played Cruisin' World on N64 as a kid.
I think it's hilarious that Venom SST isn't even the only competent car fighter in Rivals Workshop, given we have Bird Guy in a Car and Mario Kart. And speaking of characters who play a different game like Roxey (gotta give it to Zetta to remember her!), Phasmo and Qua Mario, we still have Arwing, Thwomp (EDIT: And also Snek), and I'd fit Solid Snake in too. And don't forget The Noita and Magicka Wizard, who need a goddamn manual. And Screecheart, which is on a league of its own.
@@bobygreen8429 I've mispelled it, it's "Screechheart". Screechheart is pretty much an escort mission made platform fighting character. It controls an object you can hit to damage the character, but you can't hurt Screechheart directly for %, you can just launch.
These are nice, I like Wacky and Weird characters, since they give brand new approaches and brand new spins to old ways of playing the game, giving competitive concepts such as combos and advanced techniques not only competition, but also new space to grow. And that's just what I think fighting games need.
roxey's been one of my favorite workshop characters especially early on and i don't know how to express how i feel seeing someone finally talk about her
All honesty, I'd welcome a complete video on all the signs, especially Berma because they're my favorite amongst them. Mojibake was one of my first downloaded characters so it's lovely to see them here
Have you looked into 100% accurate 64 Kirby? It’s based off of the broken S tier version of Kirby from smash bros 64. He was released in the workshop back in December 29th of 2020.
i saw the video and immediately knew phasmaphobia ghost hunter was gonna be here lol great video, it's always fun to see what wacky stuff the community has been up to. and while i have seen most of these characters, roxy and the intellivision character were both completely new to me
As a LSD main i'm really glad the character is getting at least some recognition... the character is too cool to go unnoticed. also the character is ridiculously strong in the right hands
Mojibake’s jab has some other cool properties. If you hit your opponent then all signs that haven’t disappeared yet will pop up again. Yo can technically cover the entire stage if you’re skilled enough.
Shoutout to Thwomp the OG. Also I would absolutely love a video about all of the glitchy sign characters (there's gotta be a more clever name for them though lol)
I was hoping this video would finally let me see footage of Mama Coco since she's very infamous... the other characters here are still kinda funny though
This is the one category my characters might actually be considered good in. Since most my characters have a bunch of gimmicks from their source. For example, Egghead (what I consider my magnum opus character) can draw solid lines, send out like 8 different articles, and most those articles can attack YOU, but to make up for this, you become a strong projectile while in hitstun if you were hit by your own attack. This can make for some really wacky kills, for example throwing out a bomb and then it blows up yourself, but that sends you into a line you drew, where you bounce off that and instead hit the opponent with your own dying body and kill them instead. (It's actually happened when I was playing once) The same cursor you use to draw the solid lines (controlled by the strong stick while neutral special is active) can be used to just flat out shoot opponents for 2 damage, though this really isn't useful unless your opponent is camping. Otherwise they'll just attack you while your doing this. In order to use any of your three strong articles, you first have to trace the weapon on a dot to dot. The faster you trace it, you get better versions of the attack. Also there are two different sets of aerials, a normal set (with all the game accurate gimmicks) and a light/tilt set (that's just some less game accurate moves, but work for more competitive play). The former is done with the strong stick in the air, the other is done by attack button + direction in the air Egghead can also send out an alien ship that will abduct the opponent - or yourself, and if the one being abducted is over 110%, they just die. All of these are direct one to ones with Chick Chick BOOM, one of my favorite WiiWare games. Anyway I wouldn't expect my characters to end up gone into much in a video, but I never miss a chance to self promote. I spent a very long time working on making it faithful. And I'm actually working on another WiiWare rep right now...
My relationship to Lovely Sweet Dream is I saw the character one time, in a character trailer in the first Workshop Direct, concerning a different fighter. I came away from that trailer less interested in its star than in the mysterious faceless girl who appeared in one clip. When the relevant segment in this video begun, I was like, “🫵🏾 YOU!” It also felt good when I recognized two le epic references in the moveset three seconds before Zetta dropped the character’s name. The fleeting feeling of “‼️ Is that-” it’s likely the same feeling that Smash Bros. trailers pour cash stacks into invoking as flashily as possible.
intellvision running man is fun disjointed character for messing around with. The only thing i'd change about em is the pinball up strong cuz with how powerful it is to spam it, it seems pointless to do the cool thing where you actually charge the pinball shot
I remember maining Intellivision Running Man when I first found it, back in 2020, it's certainly a representative of the second generation of consoles alright.
If you plan on doing another one of these, I highly recommend checking out REDmiso by a creator of the same name. He's got a lot of strange moves, from Dstrong, a laser blast downwards, to Uair, which can act as a helpful vertical recovery, to a whole stance change gimmick.
ya kno, i feel like the signs are by far the WEIRDEST characters in all of roa history, so if i ever get rivals of aether for my pc, I will most DEFINETLY go for choosing them, and possibly maining them for quite the fun time
