Reinventing Chrysler 1992

  • Chrysler had emerged from bankruptcy in the 1980s and under Lee Iacocca had proven adept at staying fresh. Lee Iacocca stepped down as CEO and Chairman of Chrysler at the end of 1992, being succeeded in these posts by Robert Eaton.
Although Robert (Bob) Lutz, President of Chrysler at the time of the film, and retired in 1998, was the second-ranking executive in the company. He earlier opposed the merger with Fiat that Iacocca had championed. Due to their feud, Lee Iacocca convinced the board to pass over Bob Lutz for the chairmanship of Chrysler. However, Robert Eaton and Bob Lutz did develop a strong working relationship.
In 1991, Chrysler began the process of moving its corporate headquarters from its 1925 founding location of Highland Park, Michigan, to nearby Auburn Hills. The move was complete by 1993.
This film celebrates the changes anticipated by that move and under the new leadership.
Later, Bob Lutz retired from GM as vice chairman of product development at the end of 2009.

Cracks me up. "We can't figure out why they put foam in the B-pillar". The LH cars were sleek and handsome, but they were also loud as hell inside. At highway speed, I remember I kept checking to see if the rear window was cracked or the door ajar.

Not sure why my older comment disappeared, but no one should really be shocked to see "future" Chryslers in this video. At 9:25, is the "NS" minivan (1995-2000) in Dodge Grand Caravan ES form as a clay model. Concept design approval for that was on September 23, 1991 and final production design freeze in May 1992. That part of the video was shot around April 1992 I figure. Prototypes for that pretty much ran from November 24, 1992 to January 1995.
The Omni mule was the "JL" Neon, even though some JL prototypes started being built in January 1992. JL (Neon) design freeze was in mid-1991, being slightly modified at a high expense from rectangular to circular headlights in September 1991 by Iacocca, to resemble the 1991 Neon Concept from NAIAS.
The T300 was pretty much done by September-October 1991, considering that the design was pretty much defined by November 1989 and fully locked-in by mid-1990. By the time the 1994 began rolling off the line in July 1993, 3 years had past since the LRT Concept was shown as a preview in 1990 and final sign-off.

The late K cars weren't that bad. In fact, the P bodies and later LeBarons were pretty good, if not boring cars. The new LH cars were ahead of their time, as were the 'cloud cars' . True there were teething problems but once they were worked out, they were a tremendous improvement over K car designs. Fiat/Chrysler could take a lesson from this!

but Chrysler really didn't design the LH cars, it was basically the AMC Renault Eagle Platform, only developed further, one of the reasons why Chrysler bought AMC was to get the technology inexpensively that they didn't have. Everything except the Fifth Ave was front drive horizontal mounted straight rear axle, The Eagle Premier gave Chrysler front wheel drive with independent suspension all the way around and longitudinally mounted. Chrysler only needed him to secure the govt loan, which wouldn't of been needed if the buying public wasn't so brain dmgd, js lol. but 'ol Mopar paid it back early..$4 bil was srs coin in the late 70's! Mercedes looted several times that much from Chrysler. ..i'll never understand how one guy can just sell a company..he didn't own the damn thing! complete travesty. ok, it's 2019. they're still around by some miracle. i love the whole lineup..why do ppl rip on FCA so much? the whole SRT line is some super cool stuff! It kind of reminds me of the segments on The Computer Chronicles from that time period. I love the business culture, grey/pastel colored office decor and suits these guys wore. A hobby of mine is to do a quick google search on employees in some of these videos to see where they ended up. I did this on a few of them dudes at 4 minutes in, a few passed away but a few are still around like the black dude, he looks pretty cool these days, kind of like a badass Jim Brown character. I still drive on a daily basis 1993 Chrysler Vision 3.5 V6 ( Eagle Vision ) here in Europe. Bought it five years ago for around 1800$ with 85.000miles and I am very pleased with the comfort, great reliability, that 3.5EG series engine is a gem in a combination with the 4speed transmission.
It is far better car in terms of user friendliness, realiability, comfort and charm than any BMW 7 series that I used to have. I still prefer this old LH over the MB CLS that I had, it is something about this american engeneering... Of course I am aware that this LH platform is FWD with bad weight distribution and bad driving dynamics.
I also have 300C with the 5.7 hemi ( yes, the one from the dark times of Chrysler ) and it is also a great machine.
Love the american cars, the only shame is, they are extremly hard to get here in EU. My next car is the new Mustang 5.0, which is one of only two real american cars available new here through the official dealer.

The larger cars also had 6 cylinder engines, instead of complicated high compression 4 cylinder Turbo's, with pricier maintenance and less reliability and longevity.

idk why the 4 cyl turbo is a better idea than a 6 popper. lighter weight to post better slalom numbers..ppl go ape over things like that, lol. 80's Mopar turbo 4's were great, fairly mild boost levels, garret air research water cooled turbos.. not too sure about all this putting turbo 4's in rather large vehicles nowadays, much heavier than the lil 80's Mopes. i have a '70 Fury Gran Coupe im putting back on the rd, huge car..400 lbs lighter than a new Challenger, lol! a thick sheet steel unibody is the best way to make a car..period.

Good Video, what stalled Chrysler's engine in the '90's was piss poor product re-investment and a rush to make a buck attitude. The dealers have always been a epic failure and the customer service after the fact has always been nothing less of an insult. I love Chrysler and I have Mopar Blood running through my veins, but I am now convinced that even a 12 year old could have made better decisions than any of these corporate clowns...sheesh! Good video otherwise!

Til' this day "2013" the Chrysler Lazer Turbo was the most comfortable car to drive the suspension felt plush and I had a sense of pride driving that vehicle...It's strange how attached I was to the Chrysler Lazer.

Unfortunately, Chrysler never continued this spirit after Daimler took over. Chrysler was on the right track until the 3 worst decisions the company would make from 98 onwards.
That is partnering with Daimler, then Cerebrus and finall Fiat and most likely Renault in the not so distant future, if the deal goes through.
Chrysler will no longer be North American but a maker without a true identity!
Real sad and as a loyal Chrysler man, i no longer can stay loyal to a car company that has turned its back not only on its roots but the customers who loved them as well.
I will never buy Chrysler again, until and if it ever happens, becomes 100% American again!

I owned two mid to late 1990 model LH cars. I can tell you from personal experience they were not world class vehicles. I have nightmares about the 3.5 and 2.7 liter V6 engines. Both cars were pretty much used up by 85,000 miles. Lots of annoying problems both mechanical and electrical. And no resale value what so ever.

    • @dmcnamara9859
      @dmcnamara9859 8 лет назад +2

+Lousybarber Why do you say that? I have an older friend that bought a new Concorde...back in the day. Only real mishap....was the Transaxle...replaced under warranty....and the dealer insisted on only Redline ATF. That car has been bullet-proof in terms of reliability/durability. He (every 24,000 miles under the dealers recommendation)flushes the Redline ATF.................it has never had Transaxle issues(like all LHs) since the 1st replacement and keeping fresh with Redline ATF.
The Concorde recently rolled-over 400,000+ miles...other than 2 alternators and water-pump..........engine is still together as it left the factory. He tows boats and abuses that car...........and yet it still starts and goes 20+ years.

An integrated, forward thinking effort to crush the spirit of the buyer. It's important to 'work" the customer into making a smart purchase of whatever is overstocked. Customers are no longer suckers or marks. They are valued pigeons. Salesmen are to greet the buyer with friendly openers like; Monrnin' folks, Hey Pal, and fine lookin' dog. A big grin is encouraged, as it suggests sincerity. Uss of the phrase, "Trust me" or "I won't let you down" should be considered the backbone of the car salesmen's toolbox.

Chrysler seems to be reinventing itself every 10 years or so and never learns. First in the late 70's, then the early 90's, finally in the late 00's. How long will it take for Fiat to screw them up? I'm already seeing signs of it considering they're cancelling the Dart and 200.

  • @gabevillarreal96

He's the man but Chrysler did not get better. Rams interior and exterior is super nice and the Pacifica is a great looking minivan the 300 was a great visual success a decade ago but looks were not the problem....it was their quality control their reliability their durability and their brand perception in relation to those things. Nothing has changed at all! They are the same. At the bottom of the barrel. Fiat was a terrible merger. They spent 100 million designing the Chrysler 200 for 2015 and while it was a good looking car it was a flop! They invested big into a market dominated by Honda and Toyota. The 200 is now gone 4 years later! The 300 hasn't been redesigned in 10 years plus. The ram is an amazing truck but not reliable. The Pacifica while a good effort is way behind sales leader honda and Toyota. They just can't figure it out.
