Jojo, Carlock, Stanton Moore, Benny Greb -- that's what I'm talking about!! This guy is brilliant for sure. I just picked up drum sticks for the first time 6 months ago after playing guitar most of my life but having always dreamed of being a drummer. Damn have I got my work cut out for me.
I've travel from Hong Kong to GuangZhou to see this tour on 9 Oct, seeing jojo's live performance after watching all his videos million times all these years, and even got a chance to spoke to him face to face, it's just amazing!
I love this guy. I've always know of Jojo but never really listened to much of his stuff. Until like two weeks ago i started watching his vids on here. The first time i sat down at my kit after watching his videos, things i didnt know i could do came out of me.Things i had never thought of before...it was a blast to play and discover new grooves and fills..suprising myself over and again.I find Mr. Mayers playing to be extremely entertaining and really inspiring to my own playing
@lgttb1 Probably the most versatile drummer I have ever seen. From Nerve to his jazz trio Depart, he displays 2 opposite ends of the musical spectrum and shines doing both. I've been playing for 34 years and after discovering Jojo, I realize how little I know about playing drums. I used to think I was better than average until Jojo came along. I have gone back to sticks and a drum pad because of him and I've never been more excited about playing drums and being a drummer.
@jmr2master That's the cool bit: the store owner's motto is: first hear, then buy, which means I can play anything I want, all his kits are properly tuned ^^ He'd even build a Siamese Monster if I asked him to XD Haven't been there quite a while though, gotta plan a visit... Think those omni's would fit in nicely in my setup!

@cheapshotdrummer I feel ya, if you have the playing to match it its a great cymbal. The only thing is its a dry-ish ride so you will want to work on your ride patterns.
Jojo Mayer is the closest Natural Link to Buddy Rich alive , bar Steve smith and dave weckl , his hands are the most accurate and precise ive heard let alone seen,i love his Frenetic jazz style , re the Drum sound on this Vid -Its shitty and cardboard sounding and obviuosly the vid is not capturing the Desk of FOH . But his playing is Fucking Phenomenal , The potty cardboard sound is not eminating from him or his tuning , its a Mix or room thing 100%
@cheapshotdrummer Yeah, I've gotten a chance to play the Omni ride and its a lovely cymbal! But will they let you try it out on a kit? No point in me saying its great if its not the sound you want, ya know?
A whole lot of this is recycled grooves from his solo @ Bath, UK. Not that it's a bad thing, just that it shows how a drummer applies the same parts of his vocabulary in different settings. Check it out. : ]
@lgttb1 I will see Jojo in person next week and probably won't embarrass myself by telling him to pull this video - especially since he wasn't the one who posted it. Pretty sure he doesn't mind it being here and it's the least of his worries that someone isn't a fan. I can hear past the poor sound quality and appreciate the performance. But I am a fan. You are entitled to your opinion but you can't have everyone remove videos that aren't aligning with your personal taste - that's just silly :)

if your going to record your skills to show everyone in the world on youtube... perhaps it would be a very good idea to borrow , rent or buy the very best camera and microphones ! dads old super 8 home movie camera never seem to produce the very best ! maybe if he viewed this clip on youtube he just might pull it down .
@lgttb1 There are countless videos across the web and DVD that show Mayer playing with an incredible sounding Sonor kit. You are judging the poor quality of this recording. It's obvious this was recorded using a pro-sumer or lesser quality video camera. Take into account the acoustics of the room and the effects the audio engineer used and it's hardly valid to criticize Jojo's talent based on these factors. Like him or not, he's clearly one of the best players today.
The best part about this comment is that Jojo Mayer would probably say you tune your drums wrong and that your cymbals sound like shit and I, along with most people, would trust Jojo Mayer more than some random drummer.

For a "shit" sounding kit these sound pretty damn great to me! Not a huge fan Omni's though. Nice but they just seem a bit too electronic for my tastes.

Jojo's been the shit for so long now it's ridiculous. first came to mass public attention in 98 modern drummer fest if I'm not mistaken.
Jojo Mayer is one of my major drumming influences.
