Be careful not to blow the drain hoses off the sunroof pan nipples, a very common issue when using high volume compressed air.
That's actually the reason why the sunroof in my '04 grand prix had a sunroof leak. one of the hoses wasn't on the nipple.
yes, sure it has happened
Weed eater line is perfect for keeping the drains clean. Compressed air can blow off the drain tubes causing bigger problems.
@@BuzzKillingtonnealways gotta be on the nipple
@@jjeffrey6945good suggestion
Reeeeeeeee 😂 move the A pillar trim and check on the state of those drain hoses before you parts-cannon a sunroof or seals.
A quick Google suggests Jeep drain hoses are two piece daftness, similar to those my Hot-tub-Tiguan.
Daft adapter at the roof drain hole just went brittle and stopped sealing to the main hose. Dumped that amount of water down behind my dash and behind the carpet underlay. Filled from the floor upwards with no real evidence of a leak.
Nightmare to diagnose, but very much worth a check before you go down anymore complex/costly route.
I was thinking the same. Also, it's still possibly coming from the window, and since so much was going through, it soaked up into the headliner by wicking up. But definitely pull the trim there and see the actual leak.
Very common that, the hose shrinks with time, and pulls loose. Solution is to buy a length of hose and make new ends for it, and use a little heat to soften the new hose first, so it goes on easy. No need for sealer at all if the hose is hot and pliable to go over nicely.
Bravo reeeeehhhhh!!!!
Ray. Remove A pillars and check to see if the nipples separated from the tube assembly. Also shop air is not recommended for the above reason. The plastic tube are crap and disintegrate its not the sunroof or the seals. 💪👍
Why I hate sunroofs!
T-tops too.😢
sunroofs t-tops and convertibles
Yeah. I'm done with moonroofs myself. Never buying another truck with one. They all eventually leak!
I had one on a new 07 Expedition. I did not want it, but I got a good price on the SUV. Never opened it in 7 years.
It takes a very special kind of STUPID to buy a vehicle with A HOLE IN THE ROOF!!!!
Just as an fyi - if you're using compressed air at home - there is a more than 0% chance to force one of the drain fittings to disconnect due to the clog holding more pressure than one of the fittings.
I'm not saying Ray doesn't know what he's doing but most of us DIYers could cause more harm with compressed air than help.
There are little brushes at end of long weed eater lines that you can use to DIY that safely.
If Ray knew what he was doing, he wouldn’t use compressed air on a drain tube that can become disconnected so easily.🙄
That’s why I don’t like sunroofs
Exactly
The plumbing has most likely come disconnected for drains
I was wondering if somehow something was broken in the pillar.
Decades ago my buddy worked at a dealershio. He termed a sunroof as a "power roof leak".
My friend had the same problem with his car(plugged drain tubes) so he bought some string trimmer line and ran that through the drain tube, no more clog.
Agree. I do the same for my fridge. The "frost free" bit has a drain tube that regularly blocks up. I use the plastic whipper-snipper line. Works every time.
Cut some angled nicks in string trimmer line and it will pull clogs from hair, out of drains.
I have a friend that bought a car with a sun roof and the tubes were rusted out.
That's the extra-cost Interior Hydration option from Stellantis.
It's a 2006. Long before Chrysler was bought by Fiat.
@@wilddave18073 And long after it was still really a Jeep!
Not surprised at all
Got to give those Jeep ducks a source of water somehow.
@@wilddave18073Daimler benz still a turd
Cheap drain tube used by Chrysler gets very brittle and breaks. Replace the entire hose from the drain to the floor.
Another RUclipsr had a leak from the sunroof and discovered that the rubber drain tube had either broken or became disconnected.
Yes, you're right. Ray should pull that A pillar cover to inspect that tube to drain hole connection
I thought that was where he was going, but no.
That's what I thought of when he put the rubber tip on. Concerned that if the hose was loose enough, the pressure might blow it off if it was clogged.
You really need to take enough of the interior apart to gain access to the drain tubes.
This is why I wouldn't say I like sunroofs because they leak. The one in my Expedition leaks.
The hose behind the pillars are known to crumble to dust.
I had the same problem with a Nissan years ago. Compressed air didn’t clear the drain tubes so I ran a length of bare copper 12 ga wire down the tube and it cleared the trash out. Easy fix.
It's an annual service for a sunroof.
Check by pouring into the drain and watch for the flow under the vehicle.
Takes an hour once a year so not surprising it doesn't get done.
Same here. Coat hanger as it was a straight shot. Tons of yuck.
Too simple for Ray too figure out
It looks like the the drain tube is disconnected or broke behind the a-pillar
Compressed air on a sunroof drain can be dangerous, you can blow the plastic drain tube right off the drain trough fitting itself. Find the lower exit point (may need to remove the inner fender liner, then blow back the other way and see if it comes out the top drain, if not, the tube is off. I have also found the tube split at the trough fitting.
I mentioned it in the other video, when you blow compressed air in these it knocks off the drain hose off and then drains all over inside. Looks like that is exactly what happened. Also, at the bottom they have a nipple that, because of its shape, makes it clog up faster. I cut the bottom off of mine in my Commander, which is the same exact setup.
For plugged drain holes I use an old speedometer cable on a drill. Has worked every time so far.
Yep or weed eater string.
that Jeep is over 15 years old in Florida. I bet the plastic drain tubes have deteriorated. Seen it more than once.
I would remove the covers on the A pillar to see the drain hose.
Ray , you may have blown the line off. Plug the drain tube and use a minty vac up top to be sure the line is still intact. My bet is that the line came apart and is draining into the a pillar. Gl and thanks for sharing
Mity vac, not minty sorry for the auto co wreck
The best way I have found was to get a spool of heavy duty weed wacker line. Cut 2 long pcs that will go from top to exit. The first is to work through the clog. The second is to brush it out. Take a razer and make many splits and bristles on the end, trickle water through for a while to soften and then put the other end on your cordless drill and run it through top to bottom many times. Probably will never clog again before trading in or retiring the vehicle if done correctly.
*I HATE SUNROOFS!*
Ditto, however ... older cars with sunroofs sell much cheaper. For a somewhat rough but cheap vehicle simply fill channels and tracks with silicone, maybe duct tape edges, disable actuator, bingo.
My first guess would be to pull the A-pillar cover and check the drain hose. In many cases it is not connected properly or full of dirt Best solution to renew but wait and see what comes next
Use Lucas 'stop leak'😊
At 3:38, when you walked over to turn the ball valve to half chooch, I paused the video to show my wife the diverting apparatus you use for the various water needs, and the hose bib behind made me think "yo dawg, I heard you like water supply shutoff, so I added a water supply shutoff to your water supply shutoff, so you can shut off the water supply while supplying water"
Dirt dobber wasp do live in florida
They love to put egg mudnests in any opening or make mud tunnel nests on covered from weather surfaces
My 01 Jeep grand had a leak from its sunroof in the same spot because the drain tube had become brittle and deteriorated. I would pull the trim on the pillar and check the drain tube condition
I had same problem with 02 Grand Cherokee. Brittle drain tubes in the pillar.
Watching Rainman, playing in the rain, at dinner time. So wrong. 😂
One of the reasons i've never owned a vehicle with a Sunroof, often more trouble than its worth.
you need to take that pillar off and inspect the drain tube inside it and see if there is a break in the tube.
Great video ray another way some people use to clean out there drainage holes is a using some weed wacker line the thicker line like .080.
That is the correct method. Compressed air is the incorrect method.
I had a Cadillac CTS that had problems with the sunroof frames. Best way to fix them was to use a monofilament line either string trimmer or something like that and go to the drain inside the fenderwell and push up till it exists at the top.
the problem with going from the top is if you hit the clog and you push too hard it’ll pull the tube right off the drain connection and then it drains right into the into the inside of the car. Using😂 compressed air can have the same effect.
After I brought a new car, I put the Cadillac outside and I didn’t check it enough and the sunroof drains created a birdbath in the front two seats, and then the condensation ruined all the electronics and destroyed the car. Keep your sunroof clear. The wiser don’t buy cars with sunroof.
That works IF you can find/get at the drains underneath the car....
Buy a car super cheap because the sunroof leaks, fill the sunroof channels with silicone, disable actuator. Enjoy!
My 08 cobalt had that issue. I pulled the a pillar cover off an found my tube disconnected. Super glued it back on lol
When I worked for the dealership, a tech who worked on sunroof stuff said one day, "You put a hole your roof it is going to leak!" I think he may have been having a hard day, but the funny/logic behind it is pretty much right on. lol I remember you doing a sunroof at your previous job, and was amazed at what it took to do...big job. I forget the vehicle, but seem to remember it was a junkyard/used part replacement. Remember that one? Or have you blocked it from memory? 😅
I think it was a jaguar sedan.
@@plowkingf15
@@plowkingf15yeah! It was a 2000s jaguar I believe
@@plowkingf15 Yes!
Over time the drain hoses get dried out and shrink. When this happens, they pull off of the nipple attached to the drain trough.
I've had the same problem with my car, removed the A pillar cover, found the drain hose had slipped off top fitting due to shrinkage so slipped a small aluminium tube to extend the reach of the tube inside the A pillar.
Check The Drain Lines Connected too the sun roof they May Be Broken
Check the drain hose itself. Possible it's disconnected from the sunroof and just draining onto the headliner or the hose itself has a crack.
Compressed air to clear drains is notorious for blowing the drain tube off the barb fitting on the sunroof. Personally I use white vinegar and a long brush made for it. In my old Saturn Outlook, I had to clean it monthly during Florida pollen seasons. I really hate how they’re becoming standard on so many cars and basically every mid-upper trim car
Make sure the drain tubes didn’t come disconnected from the sunroof. I like using a water bottle and pouring water into the drain and watching for it to come out under the vehicle.
Should check the connection in the pillar before doing anything with the sunroof
Just Empty Every Pocket indeed
Hahaha
Weed eater trip string can sometimes be used to clear those drains
Smoke machine in the back for a while🌬
Monsooooonnnnn on a nice hot sunny day
I was distracted for a second and looked away still listening to Ray when I thought I heard Joe from the Family Guy 🤣😂
🎉sunroof tip. Get a bottle of water and pour water at each of the four corners of each individual drain in the sunroof (yes front and rear drain holes on the driver and passenger side). Do it one at a time and If you don't see water coming out of each of the four wheel wells then there is a clog or a break somewhere in that drain line.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem, the drain tubes disintegrated and water poured down the A-pillars. Pulled off the trim and replaced with 3/8" water tubing.
Good. Afternoon Ray... stay cool. Smile and be happy😊😊😊
Interresting video as usually on your channel !

Take care and have a fantastic day Ray ! 🙂
Best thing I use was weed eater line and I did my doors also bottom holes behind the rubber door seal
40lbs fishing line for me. 👍
Pipe cleaners work wonders cleaning the drain holes
Has anyone suggested weed eater line to clear plug???😂😂
I do the same for my fridge. The "frost free" bit has a drain tube that regularly blocks up. I use the plastic whipper-snipper line. Works every time.
Looks like a good opportunity for the FLEX SEAL guy to come visit for a promotional shoot.
If that doesn’t work.. use the Just Rolled In’s famous Great Stuff spray foam treatment. Fixes everything automotive related. 👍
Get Dave to help you with this diagnosis and fix. The problem does seem to be the drains in the sunroof. Definitely blocked, and maybe also disconnected. Use weed wacker plastic line to clear blockage, then run a little water down the drains, and look for it to come out the bottom end of both drains. If not the drains tubes may be disconnected from the nipples.
Seal the darn thing with silicone. In Florida, it's either raining or 94 degrees and 95% humidity. I never used my sunroof while living in FL.
You should make sure the drain hoses are on first and then pull the kick panel off down at the bottom take a little rubber thing out of the floor cut the end off blow the hose out and then put it back together
A water bottle poured directly into the drain area is a much better method than the massive garden hose. Just pour it in the drain and see how quickly it drains and if it drains under the car. You can easily determine if it's overflowing around the sunroof or leaking inside the pillar or at the corner of the sunroof itself. Applying compressed air can pop the drain hose off and make matters worse. Pop just the A pillars first before pulling the entire headliner.
I just fixed a 2010 Malibu that had a leak. turned out the drain hose hose had shrunk over time and came off the drain grommet and was leaking inside the pillar around the dashboard area. Was a simple fix by just removing the A pillar.
Ray adventures with sunroofs have taught me that I don't want a sunroof.
You have no garden at the shop. So.... It's a DIAGNOSTIC HOSE, not a Garden Hose!
You can charge extra for that! 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks again for your excellent videos!
Check the tubes first ... I have a 2003 Jeep GC Overland. Had to replace both sun roof drain tubes last summer. Mine were a blue flex like tube that became brittle and fall apart when grabbing at them. They run down inside that A pillar from the sun roof and down through that kick panel area then emerge and drop into the floor pan. PITA to remove all of the passenger side one so I just cut off what I could get to and rerouted new vinyl tubing.
Same problem on 2013 4Runner. I used air to clear and blew the rubber drain hose off the fitting on the drain trough. Mechanic had to drop liner to reconnect
You and your timing... I was getting dripped on exactly like that in today's rain 😂
Thats one hell of a leak tho
You know I miss the Doodly Doo phone imitations Ray. Maybe once in a while do a random "Doodly Doo" for the hell of it! lol
Check the drain connection from the sun roof down to the fender. It's a common problem, especially on VW with sun roof, that the drain/connection gets porous, disconnected or broken after a couple of years.
Had to pull headliner on g6 because the drain tube became disconnected. Gave it some super glue when I put it back on
Possibly clogged, full of water, frozen and cracked while in the Great White frozen North during the Holidays.
Great job ray your the man lm always amazing how you figure out the problem price out man till next time
*I saw a tip online...get some nylon sting that is normally used for a string trimmer and slowly but surely force it down the drain to help clear it out.*
Take the trim off the A pillars and check the drain tube. It is probably either disconnected or cracked. Happened to my 08 Commander and 14 Grand Cherokee.
If you take the panel off the pillar, The hose could be disconnected or broke.
Or the clog could be worse than what you think .
You can inspect it better with the panel off which is very simple to do.
Ray they make a sunroof drain brush. It's a long flexible metal slinky thing with a brush on the end of it. I can confirm it works. My mother in laws Toyota had a sunroof leak due to a clogged drain. The brush took care of it. You can tell if the drain is working as you will have a puddle underneath the car as that's where the sunroof drains exit.
Yup, I had to use one on my RAV4.
Must be cheaper than taking the hole roof apart 🤝💯
I didn't know they made those, so Thank you! I was thinking electrical Fish Tape would probably do it... but a tool made for it is always better, despite what Alton Brown says....
You ‘ll get it fixed Ray,
I had a Nissan Pathfinder with this problem. I fixed it with duct tape. It worked great for years.😁
I blew air through the drains in my wife's Camry, they were clogged enough it pushed the rubber hose off the drain.
Had the same problem on an "87 Supra. Fixed it by sealing the seam with packing tape. The fix lasted for several years until the radiator fell apart and the cylinder head warped (unrelated).
I recommed smoke testing drains and windshields. Block one side if the drain and smoke from the other. See if there is a leak, if not unblock and check flow. To check the windshield. Put a fan in the interior venting out a window, all other doors/windows closed( pulling a vacuum in the car). Then smoke the suspected not sealed component. If you see smoke inside, you have a leak.
Hope the customer goes ahead with this one, I have to fix the sunroof on my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 and having an idea how it comes apart would be awesome 🤣
My Jeep Cherokee sun roof does not stop in the right place when closing. The sunroof has a vent position where the rear of the glass is raised to draw in air. When closing the glass should stop when the glass is sealed, then a second push of the button, the rear of the glass comes up. My glass goes right past that first top opening the rear of the glass.
My daughter got a shower during a heavy rain. It was a clogged drain at the sunroof. I ran weed whacker line through the length of the drain hole and solved the problem
We've had sunroofs on about 8 of our GM Cars over the years. Never had an issue....& this is in Eastern ND. Temps from -30F (rarely thank God!!) to 100+ sometimes. Humidity levels from bone-dry to Miami-like.
Keep the roof & door seals pliable!!! Use a good vinyl protectant a couple times/yr. Thankfully, we have a 3-car garage.
Unfortunately I'm probably too late on this one but, I had the same issue on a 2009 grand Cherokee limited a couple years ago before the family got rid of it. If I remember correctly there is a very small diameter barb fitting behind the A pillar trim on the inside connecting two small diameter rubber hoses I believe this was the part of the tube that was clogged and fixed my leak from the trim screw cover hope when I blew out the barb fitting, most likely for ease of factory installation, but awful for clogging. Hope this helps!
The hose probably came off of the plastic sleeve underneath the headliner, too funny I cleared out a Explorer exactly the same. Pull the A pillar cover and repair the drain hose and clean it out. I used a wire and compressed air.
Once my 03 Explorer's headliner was wet on the passenger side and I found that the sunroof drain hose had become unattached from the sunroof drain hole. I reattached it with a small hose clamp. While I was at it, I did the same for the driver's side. It was a tight fit working above the headliner. No more leaks.
Check your front sunroof drain hose that runs down the pillar there and cleaning it. You probably knocked it off.
The drain tube has become detached just inside the trim. Drop that corner of the headliner and you will see it immediately!
I had the hose come off on my MKV GTI. Had to pull the head liner to repair it. It was a friction fit only from the factory, so I made sure to put a clamp on both sides, and checked the rear fittings too.
On the 1st gen. MINI Coopers, there are rubber connection tubes from the sunroof drain to the "A" pillar tube. Sometimes those rubber hoses get dislodged and leak in the same exact area. Try lowering the headliner and take a look in there.
I have seen where the little tube for the drain will come off and cause this. You will know when you pull the A pillar off and look for it. If not, 😢😭
Hope the customer ops to fix, I'd really like to see Ray work his magic and fix this one!
Had a friend who had a Jeep. They had it to the dealer several times to find the leak. It was determined that it was leaking from a body seam. From what the dealer told them, that water leak are very common with jeeps.
At least you can get to the drain holes to clean them out. I had a Ford Focus, and the sun roof tracks were right over the drain holes.
Had a 2006 rav4 do this. Wasn’t the sunroof. There was a VERY slight separation in the roof panel seams under the roof rails. Chased it for quite a while. Tiny bit of epoxy fixed it
Put a smoke machine in the drain line and check for leaks. 😊
I have an 03 Grand Cherokee and it leaks. What i found that stops it is loosen the 4 torx screws, 2 on either side, push up on the sunroof and retighten them. Stops the leak for a while until it drops down again. I just duct taped mine and took out the fuse, got tired of fixing something i didn't use. It leaks in at the rear of the sunroof as thats what drops down when the screws loosen. You can see it dropped down at the rear in the video and it just comes in faster than the drain holes can manage.
Expanding foam into channels, trim off the excess, Duct tape the edges, disable actuator and enjoy the lack of leaks and golden silence after years of putting up with the whistling at speed.
2017 honda ridgeline same problem. Dealer readjusted the sunroof. nope. Blew out the drains. Nope. Another shop checked to confirm drain lines were still secured. yep. I bought a new gasket for the window. Old one looked okay - no tearing anywhere. But that was the problem. It was too flexible as it aged. Problem solved. goes thru hi pressure car wash - no more puddles.
Not a Jeep fan, but that is a crazy rad lookin' Jeep! Love it! Fingers crossed we can get that leak fixed; water leaks suuuck! :(
I had this problem with a Lincoln LS. The tubing had shrunk and pulled itself off the nipple on the drivers side. I couldn’t get it back on, so I plugged it with duct seal, forcing the water to go to the passenger side. That fixed it.
Pull headliner down, disconnect and blow out all 4 drain hoses from sunroof. Rear ones run through b-pillar, reconnect hoses and clean out sunroof track with water, blow out hoses again, put it back together, done
Welcoming back!
