During my upbringing, for long stretches I had zero access to WWF TV, which at times made it hard to follow. As chance would have it, I was on a week-long trip to London with my dad in the spring of 1993. So I got to follow a bit more of the weekly build-up than usually. Hence, WrestleMania IX will always be a bit special for me. As a giant Bret Hart fan, of course I couldn't really be happy about the ending. I actually think the first half of the main event was really good and I completely believe Bret saying that Yokozuna got tired and edited out a lot of the ending. Rather than just have Bret Hart disappear, they should have at least had him go back in the ring and give Hogan a reluctant handshake. The way they did it, Bret Hart was made to look like a chump.
I actually have a soft spot for this Wrestlemania. This was the first Wrestlemania I ever saw live. We had just gotten an illegal cable box to be able to watch anything on PPV. So 8 year old me was through the roof excited. Never in my wild dreams did 8 year old me think I would be able to watch a wrestlemania live. Now I can very much realize that this wrestlemania isn't good. But that doesnt stop me from being able to still find enjoyment out of it all these years later. I hope you continue to go back do reviews of these old ppvs. Great video!
I was 6 back in 93. My aunt used to record PPV’s off Sky and I’d receive them a few weeks later. However, I’d not had any since Wrestlemania VIII the previous year, so a lot had changed for me. I did enjoy the new to me talent (especially Tatanka & Doink) and I was shocked and happy that Bret was WWF Champion. I’d turned on Hogan after he lost to Underaker back at Survivor Series 91 so I was happy he and Brutus had lost to Money Inc. (I was a big fan of Million Dollar Man) and I remember being super annoyed that he screwed over Yokozuna (I’m a huge Japan enthusiast due to wrestling, and that started with the Orient Express…yeah), so much so I recorded over the end with Animaniac episodes.
I was about 6 or 7 when I watched WM-IX, and it is also my earliest memory of watching any kind of wrestling on tv.. (I tuned in late, so Crush vs. Doink was the first match I ever saw).. I'll always remember this show as one of my favorites..
Ha same mate. Very nostalgic this wm, couldn't care less that it isn't seen as a classic or whatever. I was still 'is this real or not' around this time too, which looking back now made it all the more magical (like Xmas!)
My first ever real mark-out moment was when JR appeared in my house in nyc we watched everything we could and even then JR was head and shoulders the best.
I really like that late 1980s early 1990s synth theme song at the beginning of the video! I'm not holding it against Hitman that he got squashed by Yoko. I mean dude is like a million pounds, no shame in losing to him. It would be like a human apologizing for losing a strength competition with a gorilla. Dude you don't need to apologize to us. It's a frickin gorilla.
This one holds a special place in my heart. I was 6 years old, and my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I asked for this PPV. I got to invite my friends and we had a great time!
Urban legend is Tatanka was supposed to win the IC title from Michaels, but Michaels said, "That doesn't work for me, brother." Hogan hears this, and thus the brother steals the brothers line!
Please make one of the "Quality" the flat 720... anything above that makes it play and pause constantly with some of us... Thanks! Also, great work, keep it up!
Doink would've been good in the Attitude era, I can imagine him competing for the hardcore title. Also could've teamed up with Goldust and Mankind and made a little stable out of it. Like a WWF version of the Dungeon of Doom
Fantastic retrospective here, loved it, enjoying reliving the wars too. Especially here in the UK as you needed Sky Sports 1 on a Criday night at 10pm to watch raw is war whilst WCW was on at 7pm straight after Cartoon Network finish and TNT started. I’m old
I remember when he returned I thought he was sick and my dad said he's off the steroids and worked out harder He was still a pretty big guy even after the weight loss
We need more of the classic PPVs getting the Reliving the War style treatment! I’d love nothing more than to hear your breakdown of Survivor Series 93 - Especially the Bastion Booger, Bam Bam, and Headshrinkers vs Doink Bushwhackers and Doink Men on a Mission.
I like your points about the ending. I think there's sometimes a tendency amongst us online to presume that if your not reading dirt sheets or making posts online your not a 'real' fan. During the wrestling boom periods the vast majority of the people watching were not the hardcore smart marks. That's what being part of mainstream culture is like, so I think if we want wrestling to grow there has to be some concessions to the 'casuals'. Having said that, the booking was still very short sighted because the Hogan act was getting stale. Hogan was disliked by both the 'true hardcores', and the 'softcore' of people who were regular viewers but didn't necessarily read Dave Meltzer. Only the very casual-est casuals still liked him, which is why he could sometimes still get great crowd reactions with the right audience. I think the move to WCW benefited him a lot because he was fresh to them and it was easier to get those good audiences there for a little while. Although the 'hulkster' gimmick did still burn out fairly quick there, which is why he desperately needed the change over into the Hollywood character.
Randy Savage, Bobby Heenan,Luna Vachon, Sensational Sherri, Howard Finkel,Mean Gene, Crush, Doink, Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, Giant Gonzales, Paul Bearer, Yokozuna, Mr. Fuji these are the people that have since passed away. Only the 2 tag matches don’t involve a dead person. Just in case you were wondering 🤷
Even though the company was deeply struggling at this point (this is arguably the last gasp of the golden age), I’ve always liked how this one “looked” if nothing else. It’s a whole different atmosphere having a live event like this outdoors, and few can effectively replicate the pop of indoors needed for wrestling without losing anything. I was also pumped for Jim Ross making the switch (even though he looks absolutely mortified to be in a toga) That being said, there’s no excuse for such a scared conservative move like what happens in the main event (especially given how soon hogan ends up leaving regardless)
Loved this one as it was my first one, Mr Perfect, Bret Hart two of my favs, Tatanka almost winning the INT.. My friend ordered the PPV and let me have the tape and id watch it all the time. the tape was set for two hours and the ppv went over that so missed a good bit of the end but yeah it holds a place in my old loving wrestling days heart.
Sherry, luna, mean gene, doink, crush, bobby heenan, randy savage, Mr perfect, yokozuna, Mr fuji, razor Ramon, giant gonzalez and paul bearer all no longer with us
I watched this live when I was twelve years old. I was torn at the end because I loved Hulk Hogan but I was so happy for Bret Hart to be the champion. I didn’t hate the Undertaker match. I thought it was cool when he came back out after the chloroform spot. I was surprised Titania didn’t win the IC title. Backlund vs. Razor was a weird combination.
Hey hold up a second BROTHER! Hulk didn’t ruin WM9! All the Hulkster did that night at WM9, was come save Bret from Yokozuna, finish the job Bret couldn’t, and took the belt back. Leaving thousands of Hulkamaniacs screaming and going home happy that night. You’d think Bret would be grateful. But no! Instead, years later… The Hulkster goes out, gives it his best effort, puts on the squash match of the century beating sting, clean in the middle of the ring 1, 2, 3 at Starcade 97. Then in slides Good ole “it’s still real to me” Bret Hart to get his “revenge” against Hogan for WM 9, and help Sting cheat Hulk out of his title. Bret’s one sick individual

Ok that DFG powerslam was insane.
(I was a big fan of Million Dollar Man) and I remember being super annoyed that he screwed over Yokozuna (I’m a huge Japan enthusiast due to wrestling, and that started with the Orient Express…yeah), so much so I recorded over the end with Animaniac episodes.
thanks for still pumping out these videos on a regular basis....you made this lazy sunday better!
Perfect was onto something. "The Lexorcist" would have been a great character.😂
Dude, thank you for doing this video. My first Wrestlemania I watched and it definitely has sentimental value. Utterly entertaining video!
The ‘Oh Wrestlemania’ theme didn’t debut until after IX and the first Mania to use it as a theme (instrumental version) was X.
It's crazy how Undertaker looks like a small person next to Giant Gonzalez 🙀
My first ever real mark-out moment was when JR appeared in my house in nyc we watched everything we could and even then JR was head and shoulders the best.
Man I love that old wrestlemania theme!!!
Dang man watching these old PPVs and seeing half the guys are gone….
I may sound weird, but i love outdoor PPVs like this one and WCW's Road Wild. It's just aesthetically pleasing.
Bobby the Brain riding a camel = Best WrestleMania
Watched the Vegas F1 earlier. Kept seeing Ceaser’s Parking Lot in the background
At age 6 this to me be the first PPV my dad ordered for my older cousin n me. Forever my favourite WM💯💯💯
This one holds a special place in my heart. I was 6 years old, and my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I asked for this PPV. I got to invite my friends and we had a great time!
I loved the addition of the countdown to wrestlemania but was gutted that Savage wasn't on the card
That theme brings back so many memories….
Urban legend is Tatanka was supposed to win the IC title from Michaels, but Michaels said, "That doesn't work for me, brother." Hogan hears this, and thus the brother steals the brothers line!
Right Hbk didn't want to lose the strap and Vince didn't want to end Tatanka's undefeated streak so we get the dq finish
Please make one of the "Quality" the flat 720... anything above that makes it play and pause constantly with some of us... Thanks! Also, great work, keep it up!
Heel Doink had so much potential....😢
It was Matt borne
Doink would've been good in the Attitude era, I can imagine him competing for the hardcore title. Also could've teamed up with Goldust and Mankind and made a little stable out of it. Like a WWF version of the Dungeon of Doom
Fantastic retrospective here, loved it, enjoying reliving the wars too.
Especially here in the UK as you needed Sky Sports 1 on a Criday night at 10pm to watch raw is war whilst WCW was on at 7pm straight after Cartoon Network finish and TNT started.
I’m old
Most unique WrestleMania setting
It’s also kind of amazing to see post-steroid Hulk Hogan here. I thought he was only this small in WCW. Hes about 60% the width he was in 1990
I remember when he returned I thought he was sick and my dad said he's off the steroids and worked out harder
He was still a pretty big guy even after the weight loss
We need more of the classic PPVs getting the Reliving the War style treatment! I’d love nothing more than to hear your breakdown of Survivor Series 93 - Especially the Bastion Booger, Bam Bam, and Headshrinkers vs Doink Bushwhackers and Doink Men on a Mission.
Rikishi doing the clothesline sell even back then was nice to see
Your videos are fantastic bud.
WrestleMania IX was a precursor to the [outdoor stadium] WrestleMania events we know & [kinda] love today
I remember watching this when my friend lent me his VHS tape after recording it from PPV. It was cool, but what did I know, I was 9!
I was also pumped for Jim Ross making the switch (even though he looks absolutely mortified to be in a toga)
That being said, there’s no excuse for such a scared conservative move like what happens in the main event (especially given how soon hogan ends up leaving regardless)
Looking back it was nobody's fault
SummerSlam 1992 was the grasp of the golden age.
Good video upload enjoyed watching it got this one on tagged classics dvd brilliant
This is a favorite of mine. Probably nostalgia but having the Steiner Brothers at Mania was a dream come true for me.
Keep pushing, you will hit a million subs soon.
Sensational Sherri was stunning🔥🔥🔥
Sherry actually was hitting on me at age 16 in Orlando- it pissed my girlfriend off but I loved it.
I have fond memories of watchin this PPV scrambled. I even had the cassette tape with the Wrestlemania theme on it. What a wonderful time to be a kid.
LOL! I totally forgot that Wrestlemania song had lyrics!
This was my era!
Same,12 years old.
My first live PPV, too!
Thanks for the recap. 👍🏻
Steiners vs Headshrinkers happened a few times in WCW too
I love the old WrestleMania 9 arena.
"""Arena"""
What about the new Wrestlemania 9 arena?
That laughing cameraman always gets me 😂💀
*21:14* R.I.P. Ref Joey Morella
Not my era so I never saw it in context of the day, but honestly I enjoyed this a lot more than many big PPVs of 97 and 98 on RTW.
Nice timing covering a Las Vegas event
DOINK BRAH! MAKING KID CRY BRAH!
😂😂
Waited 31 years for this episode
My favourite Wrestlemania ever. As a kid, a Wrestlemania held outdoors was EVERYTHING!
