. I feel deep affinity with a man who was born two thousand years before in Greece. His name was Epicurus. Nobody thinks of him as religious. People think that he was the most atheistic man ever born, the most materialistic ever born; he was just the opposite of the religious man. But that is not my understanding. Epicurus was a naturally religious man. Remember the words ′naturally religious′; religion happened to him. That′s why people overlooked him, because he never went to seek. The proverb: eat, drink and be merry, comes from Epicurus. And this has become the attitude of the materialist. But Epicurus, in fact, lived one of the most austere of lives. He lived as simply as nobody has ever lived. Even a Mahavir or a Buddha were not so simple and austere as Epicurus - because their simplicity was cultivated; they had worked for it, it had been a practice. They had thought about it, and they had dropped all that was unnecessary. They had been disciplining themselves to be simple. And whenever there is discipline, there is complexity. There is a fight in the background, and the fight will always be there in the background. Mahavir was naked, nude; he had renounced all - but he had renounced. It was not natural. Epicurus lived in a small garden. The garden was known as Epicurus′ garden. He had no academy like Aristotle, or a school like Plato; he had a garden. It seems simple and beautiful. A garden seems more natural than an academy. He lived in the garden with a few friends. That seems to be the first commune. They were just living there, not doing anything in particular, working in the garden, having just enough to live. It is said that the king once came to visit... And he had been thinking that this man must be living in luxury because his motto was: Eat, drink and be merry. ′If this is the message,′ the King thought, ′I will see people living in luxury, in indulgence.′ But when he arrived he saw very simple people working in the garden, watering trees. The whole day they had been working. They had very few belongings, only enough to live. And by the evening, when they were there having dinner, there was not even any butter; just dry bread and a little milk - but they enjoyed it as if it were a feast. After the dinner, they danced. The day was over and they offered a thanksgiving to the existence. And the King wept - because he had always thought to condemn Epicurus in his mind. He asked, ′What do you mean by saying, "Eat, drink and be merry?"′ Epicurus said, ′You have seen. For twenty four hours we are happy here. And if you want to be happy, you have to be simple - because the more complex you are, the more unhappy you become. The more complex the life, the more misery it creates. We are simple not because we are seeking God, we are simple because to be simple is to be happy.′ And the King said, ′I would like to send some presents for you. We are out there, but many of us practice philosophy, but don't discuss it much as we don't preach it, so the subject doesn't come up in conversation. Most philosophy is personal, and about working on your own virtues and research.
You taking your time in watching this video and reflecting upon your own circumstances already makes you more of a philosopher than you think. In the lack of communication with others, you should reflect upon your own ideas and develop your own virtues and once you've better'd yourself, you will have an easier time in finding people that are like-minded.

Thanks for this excellent video. Epicurus is a big influence in how I live my life. Personally I question the law of the land in the cases where its has little to do with justice and more about social control etc. But I hold myself to being virtuous in my dealings with people etc.
Ive been discovering the philosophy of the past and have found beautful peace through stoicism. It has occurred to me there are no meetings to discuss thesee teachings. The spiritual have church, the addicted have anon... I think we should organize to create forums in person.

What have I learned due to this video ? 1) You should be content with little, lead a minimalist life . By doing this you will see how calm and peaceful your life will become. You should not envy other people who lets say have a more advanced car or a house because you will consider that your car is a nonworthy trash. 2)You should study philosophy, fill your life with wisdom . Live this life right now, enjoy it cause you have only one life and no more..... Live now cause ,be authentic , as philisophers think there is no a punishment in afterlife.We develop our rational faculties and learn to make better decisions . Personally I can highly recommend you to write a diary where you can gather your everyday thoughts , compare them with the past thoughts and become better every day. 3)

I have a hard time understanding 3 concepts: - why such an emphasis on friends when friends can at any moment betray you, disappoint you, move on with their own lives, move away or die? Seems like the friendships epicurus had in mind were supposed to be eternal and unproblematic all the way through, which is impossible. Given that epicurianism says that love relationships are not the goal because of the pain they can cause, I have a hard time understanding how the same thing doesn't apply to friendships 》》 also, why not mentionning family? Sure, you can't choose your family and I know that epicurianism isn't advising to reproduce...but...what are you supposed to do with your parents and relatives in general? Ignore them? - I don't think people are anxious because of the afterlife only. They are afraid of suffering before they die and make their love ones suffer. And they are afraid to miss their loved ones and be overwhelmed with guilt or memories that are too painful to remember. - how are you supposed to react when things don't go your way? If you seek ways to not suffer all the time by living a balanced life etc...doesn't mean that things won't happen to you. You may lead a very healthy lifestyle and yet become extremely sick and suffer and not be able to do anything anymore til you die. How are you supposed to deal with it if all the ataraxia you have ever reached was due to your absence of suffering in the first place? You can only have an impact on a small fraction of what happens to you. I can only imagine that epicurus would have crumbled at the death of a friend. I don't know if I am expressing myself correctly. Epicurianism sounds like a great philosophy and I know many people who embody it naturally. But the aforementionmed points puzzle me.
I think he was not immune to emotions or suffering- nor did he ignore these things, but rather, found ways to navigate emotions and limit hardships through balance and ataraxia (and reflection on philosophy). This is just my early opinion on this, im new to Epicurean philosophy, but he 'seemed' like a reasonable guy.
Arun, by actually living within his philosophical thoughts, after studying those in a book and or a RUclips "audiobook" videos is exactly how you become a better swimmer or a well trained surgeon. Lessons followed by practice in the subject are ideal IMHO. And by watching a well done video of swimming or surgery is an extension of the books on those subjects, making them much easier to understand.
This makes me yearn for a simpler time, when all you needed to do to live a happy life was to rob a bank and live off the interest offered by their competitor...

Greeks philosophy was influenced by eastern civilizations such as Phoenicians (introduction of alphabet), ancient Egypt (maths) & ancient iraq (astronomy).Also philosophies such as stoicism were from the east, especially from Phoenician , modern Lebanon.

Only the Greek alphabet progressed to the separation of syllables into letter-phoneme-sound the Phoenician A, how do you explain it since the Phoenicians had no vowels and finally it has a different phonetic quality than the Greek A All scientific terms related to writing, e.g. The grammar, syntax, tone, phoneme syllables are in Greek. if the alphabet had been found in Syria-Lebanon, it would have spread as a more practical script to Egyptians, Syrians, Arameans, Mesopotamians, but this did not happen to those who continued to write until Hellenistic times in cuneiform script. the Phoenician script is a simplification of the syllabic Cyprominoan script in Cyprus In fact, the Cyprominoan script is more complete for writing complex texts because it preserves the vowels today we cannot read Carthaginian inscriptions that were supposed to be written in the Phoenician script en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carthage_Administration_Inscription from the 4th century BC after the fall of the Persian Empire, the entire east from Egypt to Mesopotamia was written in the Greek alphabet. At 9:22 “Relying on yourself involves a certain kind of ethics and confidence in the law”. Does anyone see any problems with this logic? Then the speaker goes on to say we need to rely on good lawyers and logic?!? Also, this presupposes that the ethics of others align with your own, or you need to adjust your ethics to align with the crowd , further illustrating you can’t be self sufficient. It seems to me you are not being self reliant but instead of relying or praying to a god you substitute him with the man, or the political system. Or maybe I just don’t get it…
I think it just means you shouldn't rely on supernatural intervention and use all means at your disposal to battle problems yourself. I don't know much about the general ethics at that time. But nowadays it does feel like certain good moral ethics are very rare. If that sentence is redundant, excuse me, English is not my first language.

Enlightening videos, but avoid generalisations e.g. 17:20 'We all fear death.' I certainly don't and I'm definitely not alone, judging by conversations I have had with a number of other persons.
Loved the video. However, his concept surrounding death is underdeveloped. It's simplistic to say that when life is over that you simply won't experience any longer, so what. He overlooks the fact that when we experience consciousness, we don't want to lose it. He doesn't appear to believe in the concept of a "Life force" if you will, that allows living things to animate the temporal body and mind. His idea of live life to the fullest and then just die and don't worry about it does not solve the dilemma of having life through consciousness and then losing it when we've experienced such a wonder of the universe.
imagine, that some greek dude 2300 years back, thought that we dont need fancy plesures, which back than were fancy wine cheese gold etc to be happy. and today here we are with phones computers drugs, still not satysfied with what we have in life.
I suspect the true drift of Epicurus's suggestions are lost much in translation, from Greek to English and generally the translators add their own personal biases,prejudiced principles and pseudo-moral codes into the narrative and foist them on the unsuspecting reading public.This is often the case with translations from Chinese, Mandarin, Japanese, European, Indian Languages besides the ancient Greek & Latin. If one takes the interpretations in this video,then just like all the other philosophers,50% of Epicurus is brilliant and ground-breaking...and the other 50% comes across as half-baked and way off the mark of Truth. Authentic Philosophers boldly shine the light on home-truths on the vagaries of Human Nature which the general populace knows in its heart of hearts but is hesitant to acknowledge boldly and self-protect. Baltazar Gracian, Oscar Wilde and Mason Cooley are the three that befits this yardstick.But they are never counted among philosophers.
We should seek responsibility not hide from it. By avoiding responsibility you will only temporarily avoid anxiety and suffering, but anxiety and suffering are as absolute as death. Example: owning a how comes with the responsibility of maintenance and repair, but renting can be unstable if your landlord raises your rent or sells the house out from under you. By avoiding the commitment you have made yourself vulnerable through your own inaction.
I love the video but I question his statement, “If God can eradicate evil but doesn’t, then he is benevolent”. I say that our focus is towards the disintegration of evil that we don’t realize that the existence of good comes with it. We think if God eliminates evil then it will be perfect but how then is there a chance for good. Balance is necessary in this world and it is unquestionable. Example, say there is a blind man walking towards a cliff. If he falls, he might be hurt. This is bad, very bad but then a young lady shouts,” STOP!!” to the blind man. In which hearing this he stops and the lady guides him where he is headed. This is Good. Without the possibility of something bad happening there cannot be the possibility of good. I disagree with Epicurus. Attacking the Concept of God, because no Just God would deprive us of the full spectrum of emotions in life. No one wants to experience pain or suffering, but to not experience it never allows growth and understanding. That’s why we should live our life the best way we can! gaining Knowledge & Happiness, now and creating great memories so that when death arrives it’s not a miserable occasion but a celebration. I agree, with many of the other views he had. But no, I like my scars, I earned them and I wouldn’t change anyone of my broken bones, that way I know when it’s time to depart this world I will go into the next life, knowing I actually lived this one!
I don't think that's why Epicurus attacked the concept of God as commonly held by people. Here is an excerpt from his letter to Menoeceus on the subject: "First, believe that god is a blissful, immortal being, as is commonly held. Do not ascribe to god anything that is inconsistent with immortality and blissfulness; instead, believe about god everything that can support immortality and blissfulness. For gods there are: our knowledge of them is clear. Yet they are not such as most people believe; indeed most people are not even consistent in what they believe. It is not impious to deny the gods that most people believe in, but to ascribe to the gods what most people believe. The things that most people say about the gods are based on false assumptions, not a firm grasp of the facts, because they say that the greatest goods and the greatest harms come from the gods." societyofepicurus.com/writings/

Epicurus.
I have a hard time understanding 3 concepts:
- why such an emphasis on friends when friends can at any moment betray you, disappoint you, move on with their own lives, move away or die? Seems like the friendships epicurus had in mind were supposed to be eternal and unproblematic all the way through, which is impossible.
Given that epicurianism says that love relationships are not the goal because of the pain they can cause, I have a hard time understanding how the same thing doesn't apply to friendships
》》 also, why not mentionning family? Sure, you can't choose your family and I know that epicurianism isn't advising to reproduce...but...what are you supposed to do with your parents and relatives in general? Ignore them?
- I don't think people are anxious because of the afterlife only. They are afraid of suffering before they die and make their love ones suffer. And they are afraid to miss their loved ones and be overwhelmed with guilt or memories that are too painful to remember.
- how are you supposed to react when things don't go your way? If you seek ways to not suffer all the time by living a balanced life etc...doesn't mean that things won't happen to you. You may lead a very healthy lifestyle and yet become extremely sick and suffer and not be able to do anything anymore til you die. How are you supposed to deal with it if all the ataraxia you have ever reached was due to your absence of suffering in the first place? You can only have an impact on a small fraction of what happens to you. I can only imagine that epicurus would have crumbled at the death of a friend.
I don't know if I am expressing myself correctly. Epicurianism sounds like a great philosophy and I know many people who embody it naturally. But the aforementionmed points puzzle me.
I think he was not immune to emotions or suffering- nor did he ignore these things, but rather, found ways to navigate emotions and limit hardships through balance and ataraxia (and reflection on philosophy). This is just my early opinion on this, im new to Epicurean philosophy, but he 'seemed' like a reasonable guy.

Arun, by actually living within his philosophical thoughts, after studying those in a book and or a RUclips "audiobook" videos is exactly how you become a better swimmer or a well trained surgeon. Lessons followed by practice in the subject are ideal IMHO. And by watching a well done video of swimming or surgery is an extension of the books on those subjects, making them much easier to understand.
This philosophy clearly had a strong influence on the thinking of Schopenhauer.

Then the speaker goes on to say we need to rely on good lawyers and logic?!? Also, this presupposes that the ethics of others align with your own, or you need to adjust your ethics to align with the crowd , further illustrating you can’t be self sufficient.
It seems to me you are not being self reliant but instead of relying or praying to a god you substitute him with the man, or the political system.

I think it just means you shouldn't rely on supernatural intervention and use all means at your disposal to battle problems yourself. I don't know much about the general ethics at that time. But nowadays it does feel like certain good moral ethics are very rare. If that sentence is redundant, excuse me, English is not my first language.

Enlightening videos, but avoid generalisations e.g. 17:20 'We all fear death.' I certainly don't and I'm definitely not alone, judging by conversations I have had with a number of other persons.
The real test comes when you or a loved one are at death's door.
Loved the video. However, his concept surrounding death is underdeveloped. It's simplistic to say that when life is over that you simply won't experience any longer, so what. He overlooks the fact that when we experience consciousness, we don't want to lose it. He doesn't appear to believe in the concept of a "Life force" if you will, that allows living things to animate the temporal body and mind. His idea of live life to the fullest and then just die and don't worry about it does not solve the dilemma of having life through consciousness and then losing it when we've experienced such a wonder of the universe.

I suspect the true drift of Epicurus's suggestions are lost much in translation, from Greek to English and generally the translators add their own personal biases,prejudiced principles and
pseudo-moral codes into the narrative and foist them on the unsuspecting reading public.This is often the case with translations from Chinese, Mandarin, Japanese, European, Indian Languages besides the ancient Greek & Latin.
If one takes the interpretations in this video,then just like all the other philosophers,50% of Epicurus is brilliant and ground-breaking...and the other 50% comes across as half-baked and way off the mark of Truth.

We should seek responsibility not hide from it. By avoiding responsibility you will only temporarily avoid anxiety and suffering, but anxiety and suffering are as absolute as death. Example: owning a how comes with the responsibility of maintenance and repair, but renting can be unstable if your landlord raises your rent or sells the house out from under you. By avoiding the commitment you have made yourself vulnerable through your own inaction.
I love the video but I question his statement, “If God can eradicate evil but doesn’t, then he is benevolent”. I say that our focus is towards the disintegration of evil that we don’t realize that the existence of good comes with it. We think if God eliminates evil then it will be perfect but how then is there a chance for good. Balance is necessary in this world and it is unquestionable. Example, say there is a blind man walking towards a cliff. If he falls, he might be hurt. This is bad, very bad but then a young lady shouts,” STOP!!” to the blind man. In which hearing this he stops and the lady guides him where he is headed. This is Good. Without the possibility of something bad happening there cannot be the possibility of good. I disagree with Epicurus. Attacking the Concept of God, because no Just God would deprive us of the full spectrum of emotions in life. No one wants to experience pain or suffering, but to not experience it never allows growth and understanding. That’s why we should live our life the best way we can! gaining Knowledge & Happiness, now and creating great memories so that when death arrives it’s not a miserable occasion but a celebration. I agree, with many of the other views he had. But no, I like my scars, I earned them and I wouldn’t change anyone of my broken bones, that way I know when it’s time to depart this world I will go into the next life, knowing I actually lived this one!
I don't think that's why Epicurus attacked the concept of God as commonly held by people. Here is an excerpt from his letter to Menoeceus on the subject:
"First, believe that god is a blissful, immortal being, as is commonly held. Do not ascribe to god anything that is inconsistent with immortality and blissfulness; instead, believe about god everything that can support immortality and blissfulness. For gods there are: our knowledge of them is clear. Yet they are not such as most people believe; indeed most people are not even consistent in what they believe. It is not impious to deny the gods that most people believe in, but to ascribe to the gods what most people believe. The things that most people say about the gods are based on false assumptions, not a firm grasp of the facts, because they say that the greatest goods and the greatest harms come from the gods."
