  • Seeing chrome work looks like it will be another two to three weeks before thats done, and another two weeks before I get another dash pad, and waiting on the interior kit, is really holding up the project.
    The other day, I started on polishing the hubcaps. The first one has a full day of work, and is nowhere near being finished. It was one I picked up to replace the damaged one, but it had silver paint I ended up sanding off. That turned into a major chore.
    My old buffer worked good, but I have been wanting to get a better one for decades.... today I went and bought a new one. It will make polishing much easer.
    I thought I had video of how I bumped and sanded out the hubcap, but my old camera decided I didn't need that video. Turns out the memory card was bad.... the camera is fine.

    We had that same hubcab on our 66 Galaxie 500 2-door hardtop, pale yellow-off white roof. Sharpest car my Dad ever owned. And those hubcaps really set it off.

    Nicely done Howard! They are going to look great when you are done, Dennis Carpenter reproduces high quality restoration parts, most of their parts are made from original Ford factory mold's, I am only an hour or so away from their facility, before covid they offered tour's of the facility on show days at Charlotte motor speedway, Food Lion Auto Fair,nice show to attend, the tour of their facility is nice to take if you have time, and the national mustang owners museum is just behind their facility!! Make's a great daycation!

    Looks great! I have a set of original hubcaps for my 64 Galaxie up in the attic. Two are NOS and the others are so clean they could pass for NOS. I'm running old style American Racing wheels for now. I need to get my original rims repaired as the holes are wallowed out from years of use. The lug nuts bottom out on the drum before they tighten on the actual rim.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray 3 года назад +2

      I would look for a usable set of original wheels as I don't know if repairing the lug nut holes is safe. How would that be done?

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  3 года назад +1

      I like custom wheels on certain cars, but this Galaxie it too original to change.... plus I have gone way over budget on this project, so unless it's a 100% needed part, I will stick to the original stuff. You better off finding another set of good used wheels, then trying to repair hogged out lug holes.

    Your Galaxy has the same hubcaps at my mom and dad's 66 Galaxy. my mom was never good on parking on the street and took out the hubcap against the curb so my uncle gave us a set of moon caps from a Ford Galaxie maybe a 64 or five ? They didn't look as good as the original hubcaps ? Cars looking really nice I can't wait for this summer for you and your partner to go cruising down The boulevard Period.

    I agree with Hub caps (or Wheel trims as we call them in the UK) Being swapped out for after market rims when there made of nasty plastic!, but those stainless hub caps look great👍

      @Perry Elyod That is 100% correct, but it's kinda a slang of sorts to me, to call the wheel covers, hubcaps.... the true hubcap is the little one for the wheel bearings.

    I totally agree with you about the wheels! Nothing turns me off faster than an incorrect wheel. The wrong brand or division hubcap will also catch my eye. Dog dishes are awesome as well. Just another way to stay true to the original I guess.

    Howard, if possible, would like a brief show 'n tell of original upholstery. Ever since you announced you were replacing it I've been looking for a rip, a sag, or sun fade on the seat tops, anything to explain replacing what appears to be pretty nice looking original set of front and back seat covers. Know you're not doing a color change.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  3 года назад

      The original interior is in really good shape, but it does show age. I ordered a new one, so the interior looks as nice as the rest of the car. IF the new kit takes too long to get, I'll clean the original stuff up and put it back in the car. I'll show it in a future video..... it is in early past videos, before I removed it.

    Ford continued to use that wheel cover on trucks beginning in '66 through well into the 70s. The center was omitted on the front of 4x4s. I appreciate the originality but there was a mag-style wheel cover in '66 and '67 with exposed chrome lug nuts and really set these cars off.

    • @dcformee123

    • @OldCarAlley

      I like the mag covers, but I have dumped enough money into this project, so I am using the original covers, as I really like them. My uncle had a early 70's Bronco.... it had the same wheel covers.

  • @gregsimon1285

    The gray material on your hubcap may be anodized. If so it can be removed by spraying it with oven cleaner and letting it soak. It will not affect the metal. After it soaks and bubbles for about 20-30 minutes rinse the hubcap in water to remove the oven cleaner. The anodization should be gone.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  3 года назад

      I was thinking of using paint stripper, but I not going to fool with the other painted cover. I got the two together from a guy, thinking I could use one to save time in straightening the original cap.... not! I going to repair the original cap, it will be less work.

    I absolutely agree about Custom Wheels on otherwise original looking Classics ! - That and TRUCKS that are lowered so far that they can never again carry loads as they were intended to do , are my pet PEEVES !

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray 3 года назад

      I agree. Some of the large diameter wheels I see on older cars look terrible and hurt the ride and handling characteristics of these cars which were not designed to ride on modern tires in the first place. The purpose of this restoration is to restore the car as closely as possible to its original appearance and using original or close reproduction parts is the best way to accomplish that goal. Period correct custom wheels might be ok on a car which has been customized and/or had other mechanical changes made to enhance performance.

    The reason that "Dennis Carpenter" and his Son's company "Daniel Carpenter" products are so good is that the majority of the products they sell are made off of the Original Ford Molds and Original Ford Tooling...since they now own them. The Father and Son own more 1950's-1970's Original Ford Tooling equipment than anyone in the world.

    On Howard are you going to get radial white walls or bias-ply white walls ? If you're going with bias-ply Maybe you can get the dual Whitewall Type or red walls even ? If you're going with the radial tire you can get a nice that a white walls that are heavy-duty tires from a Hankook and Toyo ? They are a maximum load rating Tire It's better than just a set of White Walls from Walmart Goodyear there only standard load range I prefer a heavy load range on a heavy car like that
