I opened my nintendo switch thinking that it would need a thermal paste replacement, and I noticed that the CPU does not have the copper sticker just below the heatsink, but instead has the thermal paste directly on the CPU. I don't think it would make a huge difference. But it may be causing the heatsink to not make proper contact with the cpu. The plastic dents from the backplate are so frail that got broken in the process without much pressure or movement. Hi 8-Bitplus, great video! I suspect that my issue is the amount of dust that collected in one space because as you said in your video, my fan does turn, but it goes crazy fast as soon as I turn the switch on. Someone told me that I can clean it with alcohol but I wanted to know, do I need to take it apart like you did and get the fan out too or can I just clean the vents without taking my switch apart?
@@8Bitplus but until where? do I need to get the fan out too like you did in your video in order to clean potential dust off or is removing the shell of the switch the only thing I have to do?
8-bitplus, How free should this fan spin? I did the test with the cover off. The fan does spin but is loud too. While off, the fan is hard to spin by finger. Should it spin free like other fans or is there some design issue that makes this one not spin free? Also, will a cracked screen make the switch overheat? Our switch does have a crack but the screen works fine.
Can overheating a Nintendo Switch damage the game cartridges inside? Also, I don't know if my Nintendo Switch is overheating but it got a little bit of dust and now it gets hot faster but I usually play on my Nintendo Switch for 2 hours at most, I'm not getting any warnings of overheating.
@@8Bitplus yeah, you're probably right, I'm just worried if the cartridges can get damaged from the heat but I guess the console would shut off before damage happens to the cartridge.
Yeah I'd say it's on its way out. But make sure you do a session of at least 10 minutes with a graphicly intense game. Such as the Witcher, doom, or Fortnite
the Volume Ribbon is right next to the Fan Ribbon and sometimes those can get ripped id double check on that. as far as the fan goes im gonna go with faulty fan. these parts are all coming from china and they are very loosely quality controlled. id just return/replace the fan and try a new one. did you put new thermal compound on the chip as well as above where the heatsink connects to the outer metal cover?
I even took the shield off and reapplied thermal paste to the CPU directly. No real difference though. Had real hard time trying to take that CPU heat shield off lol.
@@8Bitplus Sorry, it was just by feel. My Switch's performance when docked seemed to be a little bad. I don't have numbers but I can visually feel that its choppy only when its docked. I thought maybe it was because overheating or the airflow was bad. No clue why my docked performance is bad though...
It may just be because the switch is an underpowered machine. If heat was an issue it wouldn't effect performance as much as it would effect longer play times. You have done what you can do physically. All you can do now is either mod your switch and overclock it or wait for a switch pro. Good job though!
That is a weird issue I'm not sure why that would happen. My best guess would be your charging controller chip is going out. But without tearing it down and taking a look I'm not quite sure.
Does it happen while you're playing the game or just during cutscenes? If it's just during cutscenes then it's likely an auto sleep issue with the Switch which only turns off if you're not controlling the game. Just go to Settings and turn auto sleep off by setting it to Never. See if that helps.
Yes their is if you want to bend up that aluminum spreader to get the paste cleaned off and repasted I'm sure it's fine. I just don't know how beneficial it is.
@@8Bitplus I went overboard on mine. I added fujipoly thermal pads to cover the ram chips and where that thick putty is on top of the heat pipe I added a small square of the same thermal pad material. The thermal paste I used was kryonaught. I The biggest difference is the console doesn’t get hot at all but the air that blows out is warmer. I’ve left my switch on for 12 hours playing fire emblem and it was just warm air and then cold and back to warm. In short direct contact with heat pipe and extremely good thermal pads made my console not get hot at all.
I'd test it a little further. Play a game for 10-15 minutes. Something graphically demanding and see if it spins up. Also do a manual flick test. Does it seem to have any resistance in the bearing?
Ok so I play a game for 15 minutes (Mario Kart) and I didn’t feel the fan blowing air. And I did flick the fan and it dose move but not so much. So this tell me I should replace my fan issue
It should be ok. If it starts to have error notifications on the screen or if it sounds like a jet engine. Then maybe it needs a look. But TBH it is probably fun. Just play and enjoy!
@@8BitplusI think he might be talking about the 4 screws on the four corners, I am currently trying to take them off but it won’t work, any suggestions? (I took off the screws you mentioned but the flap didn’t come off so I need to take off these ones too)
@TheWildSuperStar you may be mentioning the tri wing screws. They are not Phillips they are tri wing. Make sure you are using the correct screw driver.
The DS is less powerful and doesn't eat through battery as fast as the Switch. It also had low graphical games that doesn't need high horsepower to function so there were less issues with its hardware. Switch is a modern console in handheld form, most console intense features or games will cause its hardware to failed sometimes. This is also the same issues with handhelds like the PSP and the PS Vita as well as they too are also handheld which had high intense console like features in them. PSP had a disc drive which could cause issues (disc read issue and laser failure issue) on the go and PS Vita had burn-in issues over time if put on standby for too long.
It can't be help, the more features they put inside consoles, the more complicated it is to fix. Remember if a console repair is almost as expensive as the console, best to just buy a new console instead so if you have to pay at or around close to $300 for a repaired Switch, best to just buy a new one instead and transfer all your accounts/games/contents/saves to it. Until Nintendo completely discontinued service for the Switch will you be worry about fully repairing a broken/busted Switch.

might be a faulty fan. id also just double check that the ribbon to the fan is connected fully and flush
@@8Bitplus ribbon is okey also noticed the volume - doesnt work :/
the Volume Ribbon is right next to the Fan Ribbon and sometimes those can get ripped id double check on that. as far as the fan goes im gonna go with faulty fan. these parts are all coming from china and they are very loosely quality controlled. id just return/replace the fan and try a new one. did you put new thermal compound on the chip as well as above where the heatsink connects to the outer metal cover?
@@8Bitplus maybe you are right ill try get orginal fan
I even took the shield off and reapplied thermal paste to the CPU directly. No real difference though. Had real hard time trying to take that CPU heat shield off lol.
Yeah the heat shield is a pain. Hmm. Is your switch overheating and shutting off or are you just going by feel?
@@8Bitplus Sorry, it was just by feel. My Switch's performance when docked seemed to be a little bad. I don't have numbers but I can visually feel that its choppy only when its docked. I thought maybe it was because overheating or the airflow was bad. No clue why my docked performance is bad though...
It may just be because the switch is an underpowered machine. If heat was an issue it wouldn't effect performance as much as it would effect longer play times. You have done what you can do physically. All you can do now is either mod your switch and overclock it or wait for a switch pro. Good job though!
Trying this today hope it works! 😄😄😄
It worked!
Yay I'm glad you used my video for guidance more coming soon.
@@8Bitplus before I go, what do I do if the switch is still hot?
What could cause the Switch to abruptly shuts off at random while docked. Been playing SSHD and this keeps happening
Awesome video! Thanks so much for this!!
Thanks for the feedback and comment!
There’s more thermal paste under the processor shield.
Yes their is if you want to bend up that aluminum spreader to get the paste cleaned off and repasted I'm sure it's fine. I just don't know how beneficial it is.
@@8Bitplus I peeled it off to make direct contact to the heat pipe
@@unknownbeastgaming7264 interesting. do you think that helped with cooling? have you noticed a difference?
@@8Bitplus I went overboard on mine. I added fujipoly thermal pads to cover the ram chips and where that thick putty is on top of the heat pipe I added a small square of the same thermal pad material. The thermal paste I used was kryonaught. I The biggest difference is the console doesn’t get hot at all but the air that blows out is warmer. I’ve left my switch on for 12 hours playing fire emblem and it was just warm air and then cold and back to warm. In short direct contact with heat pipe and extremely good thermal pads made my console not get hot at all.
i'm new here and i have a nintendo switch and it is overhesting and my big brother is not help me to fix it
Great job!
Thanks! dont forget to subscribe!
My switch fan turns on only for 3 seconds when I turn on the switch and then it stop spinning. So should I still replace the fan?
I'd test it a little further. Play a game for 10-15 minutes. Something graphically demanding and see if it spins up. Also do a manual flick test. Does it seem to have any resistance in the bearing?
Ok so I play a game for 15 minutes (Mario Kart) and I didn’t feel the fan blowing air. And I did flick the fan and it dose move but not so much. So this tell me I should replace my fan issue
Sorry for the late response. but yes id say its a fan issue as long as your ribbon cable wasnt disconnected and reconnected incorrectly.
Thank for the help
Awesome video bro thanks for making it
Wher can i bring my overheating switch to fix it?
Can I ask, so I got the switch oled last week and when I play docked while charging it gets very hot. Is there a problem with it?
It should be ok. If it starts to have error notifications on the screen or if it sounds like a jet engine. Then maybe it needs a look. But TBH it is probably fun. Just play and enjoy!
I’m think of replacing my fan , but does it matter what fan you buy from Amazon .
not really unless its ridiculously cheap but amazon is kind of a crap shoot. however if it doesn't work just send it back and by another one.
Is there a place where I can get it fixed
Yeah lookup switch repair near me or phone/tablet repair
Love you brother.
Dude ..my switch still overheats ..the fan is not coming on I think ….HELP please
Did you follow the video all the way through?
Nice video cheers
Thanks for watching it. I love that this is helping so many people it's great!
I will just go to best buy cause i have 0 clue and i will probably mess something up
No shame in that! But maybe sell your broken switch online to supplement the cost of the new 1?
@@8Bitplus im just going there for them to
Fix my switch fan
Where can I go to fix my nintendo switch?
Wtf do I do about the weird screws you don’t mention you have to take off
You gotta explain that a little better.. maybe a timestamp from the video so I can review and explain?
@@8BitplusI think he might be talking about the 4 screws on the four corners, I am currently trying to take them off but it won’t work, any suggestions? (I took off the screws you mentioned but the flap didn’t come off so I need to take off these ones too)
@TheWildSuperStar you may be mentioning the tri wing screws. They are not Phillips they are tri wing. Make sure you are using the correct screw driver.
@@8Bitplus Did the box/package with tools that you linked in the description come with tri wing screws?
@@8BitplusI used the screw driver that was labeled Y000 and it didn’t work
Great Vid
Thanks buddy! More coming soon when I finish my studio.
It won't read game cards
Stay tuned I'm working on a video for that issue currently
Thank you!
Metroid Dread is causing my switch to overheat and screen to blink.
Maybe it's awesomeness is too much for your switch the handle!
My switch keeps overheating
I don't really like that you might've said a bad word near the end of the intro
Haha sometimes I get a little wild and they have to bleep me haha
Stuck on step one removing screws lol
Sounds like maybe you should hire a professional
Thank you!!!!
Cool it happens to me to
Can I just go to GameStop and tell them to fix my Nintendo
Unfortunately no. Unless you have a warranty of somekind
@@8Bitplus is there a place where I can fix it
if it works. imma come and sub
Nintendo really be messing everything up nowadays. I remember 2013 when the ds was so plain and simple and didnt have many problems. 🤧
I just wanna play some pokemon 😂
The DS is less powerful and doesn't eat through battery as fast as the Switch. It also had low graphical games that doesn't need high horsepower to function so there were less issues with its hardware. Switch is a modern console in handheld form, most console intense features or games will cause its hardware to failed sometimes. This is also the same issues with handhelds like the PSP and the PS Vita as well as they too are also handheld which had high intense console like features in them. PSP had a disc drive which could cause issues (disc read issue and laser failure issue) on the go and PS Vita had burn-in issues over time if put on standby for too long.
These are all very valid statements! Thanks for the comment!
You made this look way too easy…..
im sorry, what are you stuck on?
@@8Bitplusoh I’m planning on changing it soon, i was just looking tutorials
Oh ok. Yeah you will be fine. Just make sure you have the right tools, take your time, and you will be fine!
M.v.a.f.c. d... C.i.b... 😂😅🤣😂🤣😂
Ime
They make this shit so complicated so you’ll buy their overpriced repairs that last half as long as doing it yourself.
Yup it seems like they get more and more complicated with each generation
It can't be help, the more features they put inside consoles, the more complicated it is to fix. Remember if a console repair is almost as expensive as the console, best to just buy a new console instead so if you have to pay at or around close to $300 for a repaired Switch, best to just buy a new one instead and transfer all your accounts/games/contents/saves to it. Until Nintendo completely discontinued service for the Switch will you be worry about fully repairing a broken/busted Switch.
