    By comparing the 50 1.2 GM video made by Chris, the 50 1.2 GM is better in terms of wide-open sharpness, close-up sharpness, vignetting flare control and coma control, while tie with 1.4 in CA. The differences may be marginal or can be minimized by stopping down. But the 1.2 still remains the best 50mm in Sony lineup, followed by this 1.4 GM :)

    • @nickolasmazzara127
      @nickolasmazzara127 Год назад +3

      Not trying to be mean, but what did you expect? The 50mm f1.2 GM is $700 USD more than the new f1.4. Sony needed to give consumers’ some reason to jump to the f1.2 (and I don’t think the extra 1/2 stop of light alone was going to convince them to shell out that amount of money).

    • @sussar
      @sussar Год назад +1

      The 1.2 is about $1500 in my city brand new, surely will pick up the 1.2 for maximum image quality, just like Omega and Rolex, you’ll always want to get a Rolex even after getting a Omega, but you won’t think about Omega if you get a Rolex.😂

    • @nickolasmazzara127
      @nickolasmazzara127 Год назад +3

      @@sussar Well, good for you, get it. However, in the rest of the world, ~$2000 USD is the absolute cheapest you can get a brand new (never opened, with warranty) 50mm f1.2 (outside of sales). At that much of a premium over the new 50mm f1.4, I’d argue it is not worth it. That is my opinion, though.
      Also, your simile makes no sense. If I were to take what you typed at face value, I’d assume the 50mm f1.2 was more expensive only because of the prestige (which is also arguable; more accurately, a Rolex is only a bigger “flex”). Most watch enthusiasts know/admit that Omega’s watches are technically superior (with regards to the watch’s movement) over their Rolex counterparts. Whether you’d want to own one over the other is personal choice, but ultimately you are paying for the name. Yeah, yeah, no watch is worth the money over a $39 Casio, but that isn’t what you argued.
      Also, also, mechanical watches aren’t tools, (as much as people who are trying to justify their purchases would like to make them out to be). Given this, your simile isn’t even remotely comparable.

    • @nickolasmazzara127
      @nickolasmazzara127 Год назад

      @@jukeboxjohnnie I think that is a good way of looking at things! Price doesn’t necessarily indicate performance, as you pointed out. I think, however, that Sony didn’t want to cannibalize the sales of the 50mm f1.2 after less than 2 years on the market. I was trying to point out in my original comment that this likely is why we see a larger price gap between the two lenses, as well some performance deficiencies in the 50mm f1.4 GM (when compared to the f1.2).

It's smaller than the new Sony GM 1.4 and lighter. it's also much less expensive. By the way, it's razor sharp. Here's the specs: weight: 419g. 80mmwide and 90mm long. The filter is 71mm. The cost is $589.00 list price...Not too shabby! Lastly, don't forget about the Sony 55mm 1.8. It's only 280grams, 70mm long and 64mm wide. Even if it's a little "long in the tooth" it's a razor sharp optic. You can pick up a used one for $550.00.

    I know its a bit too late since all years you used those charts for sharpness. But I am worried that it's a bit lens specific - some lenses may be much sharper on it than others (distance from sensor - best seen on closeup image quality degradation but apparent on each lens in different places) - ideally those should be done at infinity level to compare shaprness of the lens fairly (and sensor stack on sony issuess with corner lack of sharpness if not refocused).
    But are you planning to do some extended tests on this one in the future?

Sure the Sigma is very disappointing considering their (Sigma 85mm F1.4) is awesome and somehow... smaller than their 50mm?!?
    One could argue that the Samyang F1.4 isn't that much better but for about 1000$ only so let's sy TWICE less, it is far from being twice worse, just a little. I get that there is diminishing return but there's a limit even if I could afford it if I wanted. Every 50mm are disappointing for the price I'd say, to the point I might even just consider the (Samyang 45mm F1.8) of 300$CAD which has a 10x better value for the price. I wouldn't mind paying 1000-1200$CAD for a 50mm F1.4 but it would need to be much better, smaller and lighter than the crap Sigma just released!

      Only Sony? What a load of rubbish! Where were you when all the reviews for Canon R8, Nikon 85mm F1.2 and Panasonic Lumix S5 II all dropped at the same time?! Numerous youtubers disclose that no money has been exchanged, but that's not to say maybe they're given early access for an early review. That's just part and parcel of being an influencer. Early reviews means more views and that means more access to future products.
