The Eritrean riders history of international race started back around 2003 with marcopolo cycling club. I have been following that ever since. Eritrean riders are good at climbing, have good stamina but lacked experience in downhill riding and positioning. That was according to professionals in the field. Biniam and the team, you made history, you made us proud. But as Biniam mentioned at one of his interviews strength is 50% and the other 50% is positioning. Coach, your formula worked and you made history today. Without the likes of you Eritrean riders couldn’t have reach at this level with the limited resource they have. As Eritrean, I am proud and very happy! The people of Belgium also have done their share to the victory, by going out and supporting this spectacular race to win. Thank you all!

I don't have words to express my emotion when Biniam won one of the most prestigious classic races (Gent Wevelgem) which every Eritrean child dreams of winning. Although cycling is hugely popular sport in Eritrea due to lack sponsorship and cycling academy only few Eritreans like Biniam Girmay, Daniel Tekelehaymanot, Natnael Berhane etc have been able to break through onto the global stage. Because of Biniam's win hundreds of Eritrean kids will be highly inspired to make their dreams come true. Therefore I do wish Union Cycliste Internationale would encourage major global cycling teams to sponsor more young Eritrean cyclist who have the potential to shine on global stage. I want to thank Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert for making Biniam feel as part of the family. I hope he will continue to grow and win many more classic races for the team for many more years to come! Antoine Demoitié was a rider of our team who lost his life after a crash on Gent-Wevelgem on March 27, 2016. Biniam Girmay won that same race, Gent-Wevelgem, exactly 6 years later (March 27, 2022). And at the same time, he made History for cycling. #RideForAntoine
