I had another minor incident happen yesterday (Saturday) as I was having a meal in a food court in the main indoor shopping centre in our city centre. As usual, I was wearing my baseball cap with a depiction of the Israeli flag on the front, & had a couple of Israeli flag badges on my carry bag. A few pro-Hamas supporters wearing keffiyehs then came along & sat at the vacant table next to mine. It was obvious they had been to the pro-Hamas rally in the outdoor public square of our city centre, earlier that day. Unfortunately there were not enough chairs at their table for all of them, so one of them asked me whether they could take one of the spare/vacant chairs from my own table, so I naturally said, out of my politeness, "of course, sure". After that, I did not pay much attention to them, as I was using my mobile phone & had ear-phones in. But when they eventually got up & left, as one of them was walking past my own table, they quickly slammed down 2 pro-Hamas stickers & stuck them on my table. The stickers had a depiction of an Israeli flag on them, with a large red "stop" sign printed on top of it. Of course, after they had left, I removed both stickers from the table, ripped them up, & put them in a nearby bin. Obviously, that's the retaliation one gets from these Hamas supporters, after trying to be polite to them previously. But that's just the nature of the beast, where these people are concerned.
To be fair... I feel like that could of gone a lot worse than simply putting stickers on your table. That's them being "courteous" for your politeness.
You should count your blessings, the victims of oct 7 were before then the first ones to welcome their gaza neighbors, take them to israeli hospitals when they were adked, they employed them in their kibbuzes and hostef them in their houses, only to be repayed...you know how.

When they realised they were not likely to convert me, they then loudly demanded several times that I leave the shopping complex. When I insisted that I was not going to leave, they stood up in their places & started loudly & repeatedly chanting "Free free Palestine". I just ignored them & let them carry on with their noise, as I watched a video on my mobile phone. But their noise attracted quite a crowd of onlookers around the food court area, & eventually the shopping centre's security staff turned up, as well as the police. They told the Hamas supporters to either be quiet, or leave the shopping centre, & instructed the gathered crowd to disperse. The security staff also told me that if something like that happened again, I should immediately call their control room (& gave me it's phone number) &/or the police. Fortunately, something like that has not happened since - just yesterday's minor incident. But I know to expect such poor behaviour from Hamas supporters - so nothing would really surprise me.

When my friend and I were in Israel in 2009, we stayed in an Arab hotel north of the old city. One evening my friend was relaxing on the roof with other guests when a Danish woman, pro Arab, was encouraging the Arabs to resist the Israelis, etc, etc. The hotel manager, who was also there, remarked that during the 2nd Intifada, he told his children not to get involved because he didn't want any trouble. This is a typical example of a westerner stirring up trouble (or wanting to) and then going back to their comfortable homes.

The Native American group not wanting the protestors on the ceded territory makes sense, because we know that H amas does not represent an indigenous group, they are arab, and the Jews are the indigenous group to Israel and they stand in solidarity with actual indigenous groups. 1:18:14 - I'm part Cherokee, and live around Natives (mostly Cherokee) in Oklahoma. Everyone, including me, just say that we're Natives or Indians. Unless we get specific about which tribe. I cringe every time I hear the term "indigenous". Though it's somewhat a technically correct term, nobody ever used it until the media and politicians started pushing the use of it. Then some people on social media started using it. It's almost exclusively a term used by the left, from my personal observation. We know the term "indians" is also used for those in India. But we never had problems with confusion with the use of the term, because most of us never really interact with the international world. We've mostly have only interact locally of within the US, and most people know that you mean "Native" when you say "Indian". I sometimes say "I'm the feathered kind. Not red dot." - Heard something like that from a movie. Lol
I grew up with "Natives" by several reservations of 2 different tribes. They called themselves indians and they were fine being identified by indians by other races. "Native" came later and races involved seemed ok with that too. Everything after that has seemed ridiculous and not even started by the very people the new labels are describing. (White liberals) have God Complex and a major dose of white guilt. I stay away from them. They seem crazy.

There's really nothing left-wing about it. It's politically neutral. Of course referring to native Americans, everyone who isn't an as*hole calls native people whatever they want to be called. Personally, I try to be specific about the cultural group. Great to see the Police are starting to re-enforce law and order. Authorities have been too tolerant for too long. Protesters must respect others' rights. These are basic values, not exceptions. Civil disobedience has consequences. Maybe the Police should also consider arresting those shouting profanity at them while trying to do their jobs. Noise annoys, especially profanity. Historian here. There's no actual objective distinction. There are only attempts in law to define "terrorism" and "war crime" and they are all fairly recent attempts in world history - within the past century, primarily. If you want to use a neutral term, we use "political violence." But I don't think that's what you're after. :) Some people don't seem to understand that calling political violence "revolutionary" does not make it a worthy or just cause. In reality, we call a war a revolution if the rebels succeeded in the end. That's all.

I'm very confused about that whole conversation. It's bizarre. I teach cultural history, which includes segments on native American cultures. Students always want to know about the Plains Indians (though they haven't specifically heard of the Kiowa unless they are themselves native or from that region.). I do remember a time when after being told as a child "Say Native American, not Indian. It's more polite" I suddenly started running into native people who actually preferred "Indian.". It was very briefly confusing. And then you get on with your life. When did "call people what makes them most comfortable" become a political issue? Everyone, including me, just say that we're Natives or Indians. Unless we get specific about which tribe. I cringe every time I hear the term "indigenous".
Though it's somewhat a technically correct term, nobody ever used it until the media and politicians started pushing the use of it. Then some people on social media started using it. It's almost exclusively a term used by the left, from my personal observation.
We know the term "indians" is also used for those in India. But we never had problems with confusion with the use of the term, because most of us never really interact with the international world. We've mostly have only interact locally of within the US, and most people know that you mean "Native" when you say "Indian".

I grew up with "Natives" by several reservations of 2 different tribes. They called themselves indians and they were fine being identified by indians by other races. But "indigenous" is a culturally neutral term in sociology, anthropology and historical studies used to refer to native peoples - specifically those considered to have a tie to ancestral lands - regardless of which continent.
There's really nothing left-wing about it. It's politically neutral.
Perhaps the contexts you've heard it in were political ones but it's really just a generic synonym for "native people" and "aboriginal" with that extra connotation of a cultural tie to an ancestral territory.
Of course referring to native Americans, everyone who isn't an as*hole calls native people whatever they want to be called. Personally, I try to be specific about the cultural group.

Historian here. There's no actual objective distinction. There are only attempts in law to define "terrorism" and "war crime" and they are all fairly recent attempts in world history - within the past century, primarily.
If you want to use a neutral term, we use "political violence." But I don't think that's what you're after. :)
Some people don't seem to understand that calling political violence "revolutionary" does not make it a worthy or just cause.
In reality, we call a war a revolution if the rebels succeeded in the end. That's all.

I teach cultural history, which includes segments on native American cultures. Students always want to know about the Plains Indians (though they haven't specifically heard of the Kiowa unless they are themselves native or from that region.).
I do remember a time when after being told as a child "Say Native American, not Indian. It's more polite" I suddenly started running into native people who actually preferred "Indian.".
