I use a 7 foot long piece of PVC with a coat hanger at the end with a ring bent into the end . I use a snap then swivel then another snap to what ever hook I'm using . Never have to tie a new hook only have to replace them . I also use salted shrimp so I can put them in a ziplock in my pocket and I won't get stink but never have to go grab bait either . Plus the salted shrimp lasts on your hook waaaaay better then raw shrimp . I love poke pole fishing for when I need to break a skunk the most lol
When I was a kid about 70 years ago my dad and his Buddie would take a piece of cable unwind it and coil each strand like a spring tie on a hook bait it and hook it to a rock at low tide the next low tide there would be an eel on nearly every one.
I’ve heard rumors they are there but nothing confirmed thru photographs I know for certain they can be caught on the Columbia jetties so it seems likely
I use braid 65lb and I leave a rod lengths of line and I tie it to the reel seat or hook hanger that way you can feel the bite or jig your bait my grabbing your line
Crazy...I always wondered if we had many monkey face up this far north. I knew we had SOME at least, just not how hard it would be to catch them. Then I get 2 videos in 2 weeks from the same jetty from different people. Think I'll wait for summer and get some Uni, then poke pole some saltwater Unagi!
I haven't. A lot of the range maps don't show Monkey-faced Eels this far north but they are clearly common here. I have no reason to doubt that they would present on the Columbia River jetties or even Westport.
For homemade rigs the coat hanger wire works OK but is quite bendy. After a few fish it can weaken from bending back and forth. I eventually upgraded to a stainless steel rod that I purchased at the hardware store. I pounded one end flat and drilled a small hole in the flat portion. I inserted a big split right and swivel and tie my leaders onto that. I use duct tape / gorilla tape to attach the hanger or steel rod to about a 10' cane pole. I find that to be a good length. I have one that's 15 or 16' and it's just too big and heavy most of the time.
Didn't take you long to hop on this trend hahaha. I just saw fisherman life's video. Gonna go after the kokes this weekend at summit. When will you fish wards lake if ever again?
Never even heard of that channel to be honest. I actually got the idea watching guys do this in Southern California. I don’t know of a Wards Lake so I doubt I’ll be fishing it soon. Lol 😂
I am going to give this a try here in 2 weeks at Newport, OR.

a lot of people put a coat hanger on the tip and a short leader, glad you got to do this. I plan on it in bandon next week.
That’s a good idea
I did this so much climbing on the jetty rocks. I have scars on my chins for proof LOL but hell-a fun to do and pretty good eating too.
Its very physical thats for sure. Garden gloves and kneepads would help immensely.
Man I miss poke poling! Fun stuff
Good video. Not tried this yet
Interesting adventure! Thanks for taking us with you!
Going to try hit Drano / the wind River this weekend! Inspired by your videos, wish me luck!
Good luck!
This is so cool, always cool trying different techniques.
I've spent a lot of time at that campground as a kid.... there's some good claming not to far away.
Tyler, you should totally do a fish-to-plate video. I bet you have cool tips on simple and tasty recipes!
can you catch these in wa at westport jetty as well?

Inquiring minds must know, how did they taste?!
Kind of reminded me of Burbot to be honest
Always enjoy your informative videos. I’ll try jigging for Kokanee this summer in BC. Anyone know if you can find these eels north of Washington?
There are not supposed to be that far north.
Should just get a good peace of bamboo for your pole and tie on strong mono
Is there a limit and season for these guys?
I could not find any specific regulations for this species
