As a 16-year-old when this came out, whenever I hear it, I believe that I was born at exactly the right time. In the UK, it only reached 8th position in the charts, but musically, it was an absolute landmark. It's one song that is still guaranteed to get me on the dance-floor, such is its mesmeric quality. Steve Strange died quite suddenly at the age of only 55 in early 2016, but this is such a legacy to leave. Billy Currie, FYI, was a member of Ultravox, with Midge Ure...hence, as you say, those f***ing synths...
"Devenir en gris"...it means "To turn to grey" in French...I studied French for several years, so lyrically, this song is significant for me - this combination of English and French is very uncommon

Visage were a studio project put together by Midge Ure (Ultravox) and Rusty Egan as a way to produce electronic music for Rusty's nightclub "The Blitz".... Chris Payne and Billy Currie (also from Ultravox) had worked together with Gary Numan as part of Tubeway army. So if you like this... check out Ultravox (everyone knows vienna.... but tracks like All Stood Still, The Thin Wall, Hymn etc are all pioneering).

This and Gary Numan really helped bring electronic music into the front and centre of popularity in the UK back in the day, especially considering most music journalists and magazines hated electronic music, and were into the typical British stuff back then, mostly punk bands and disco type rock done by guys with the flared jeans and long flowing hair.
Then along comes Visage, and Gary Numan and OMD, and the following year The Human League cemented synth-pop as a staple in the zeitgeist for a few years with their iconic No.1 album “Dare!”
Then it all took off, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Bronski Beat, Howard Jones, everyone jumped on the hype train once the equipment was much more affordable, the synthesisers and drum machines, and Visage among others is much to thank for this.
    God I love synth-pop.

I was 12 years old when this song came out. I can't believe that this song is 42 years old.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this.... Steve Strange is considered one of the pioneers of the New Romantic movement. The subculture emerged from his London clubs, The Blitz Club, Club For Heroes, and Camden Palace. The clubs emphasised a mix of fashion, music and glamour, and would be frequented by members of Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Sique Sique Sputnick, Haysi Fantayzee, Bananarama, and singers such as Sade, Marilyn, Midge Ure, Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Madonna etc.

This song is a classic British song of the 80's, music from a guy from Gary Numan's band and a couple of Ultravox guys and eventually Midge Ure from Ultravox writing the lyrics and melody. Steve Strange was a character from the new romantics movement of the time (also appeared as one of the characters in front of the bulldozer in the video for Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" , with a friend of Steve Strange's doing the spoken French lyrics. Visage was a project of Ultravox and Magazine musicians with Steve Strange as the vocalist / front man. The Godley and Creme video is better tah this one.

This track started life as a synth riff, the riff was used during sound check to set the levels at a venue but was never actually played during the performance!
There's a great video in where the guy who came up with the riff talk's about how the whole song came together from start to finish, he even play's live a few bits of the track and even tells which instruments were actually used! It's a fascinating story! If you love this track, just search for fade to grey here on RUclips, it's highly recommend!

'Devenir en gris' means 'turn grey'. The female dancer in the video is Perri Lister, a member of the dance troupe Hot Gossip. The female vocalist of the French lyrics is Brigitte Arens, the girlfriend of Rusty Egan, who was instrumental in the works of Visage. And, of course, Steve Strange was the frontman.

I still listen to this song regularly. How it sounds is quite unique and it aged gracefully. I'm 100% sure that if any DJ played the original in any club, people would dance their arse off on it. It's definitely a New Wave masterpiece. Just like Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics is another NW masterpiece that still sound great to this days. The latter is still getting played on many radio stations in 2024... heard it once again just a few days ago. It's just sad that Fade To Grey doesn't get the same recognition.

Chris Payne (Tubeway Army) and Billy Currie (Ultravox) composed the bones of the song with drums by Cedric Sharpley (Tubeway Army) while they were on tour with Gary Numan. Midge Ure (Ultravox) came up with the melodic structure and lyrics - the female vocals were sung/spoken by Visage member Rusty Egan's girlfriend at the time... Classic!

Babe We're Gonna Love Tonight - Lime

Try Gary Numan's "Cars" and "Are friends electric", he paved the way to synth new wave pop.

Yes, Gary Numan "Cars", "Are Friends Electric", "Down In The Park" or even his recent "My Name Is Ruin" with his daughter Persia. It ain't for nothing that Gary is called "the most sampled" artist in the world.

The original Video had both Steve and Princess Julia in it. Depicting both heavily make-up'ed. The clip scared the crap out of me, when I was just 6yrs young, beginning '81. The white sheet, revealing the woman shrouded in black. Blue nail polish, barechested Steve with a snake -tattoo painted on him. The white porcelain mask... The song was the blueprint (along with Vienna - Ultravox) for New Romantics - movement.

Did you know that Steve Strange met David Bowie in 1980, before he ever had a recording contract. They met in a night club. Bowie loved Strange's unique look, and hey presto, Strange appeared in the video for Ashes to Ashes. Soon after, he got his recording contract and the rest is history. The two men remained friends through the decades that followed.

The woman in the video is actually dancer Perri Lister (miming) who was best known in the UK as a member of the dance troupe Hot Gossip which was regarded as the most outrageous dance troupe to appear on TV at that time and had a regular slot on the Kenny Everett video show. Campaigners were constantly trying to get them banned. See “Hot Gossip - Stuff Like That” here on RUclips when you have a moment to get a real flavour of the late 1970s...

They made another video that was very popular on cable TV. The video featured mainly head shots of Steve Strange with some very interesting make-up. Much later historians of popular music identified Visage as being part of a movement called the "New Romantics", who were mainly British homosexuals who liked to wear heavy make-up and androgynous clothing, inspired by David Bowie of the early 1970s. The most successful New Romantic group was Culture Club with their lead singer Boy George, but Visage was the first to have a break-out song.
