I fell in love with this song as a teenager over 20 years ago. It remains one of my favourites to this day. My favourite Visage track of all time is The Damned Don't Cry.
Early 80"s synth pop was epic. Would recommend Joan of Arc or Enola Gay by OMD. Or if you want to listen to something REALLY different and unique, Ghosts by Japan.
It is such a great song even after 42 year's.and will still be great in another 42.What an amazing invention the synthesizer, just thought the sound's were incredible from the first time I heard one,and loved electronic music ever since. John Fox is well worth checking out,as is Soft Cell and other bands like Chris and Cosey,Cabaret Voltaire, and Clock DVA.
Visage were huge on the early 80s New Romantic scene, I still have some singles in my record collection “Mind of a Toy” , “Visage” and “The Damned Don’t Cry” are other hit singles, other songs with French lyrics are Blondie - “Call Me” or “Denis” both have French lyrics, Talking Heads - “Psycho Killer” ,or even ABBA - “Voulez-Vous”
As soon as the video started it reminded me of the kenny Everett video show; an English comedian and disc jockey. His shoe was brilliant; sketches with kenny as different characters. Cleo Rocos was his sidekick. Sorry I digress but I can’t get kenny out of my head now. Love your reactions Nick. Brings back great memories 😉😂
Gosh, I want to say that I first heard this at Medusa’s in Chicago waaaaay back in the day. Medusa’s was a “juice” or “all ages” club. Always really liked this song. Visage also had a song called “Mind of a Toy” that I liked too. The old songs like this had a wonderful atmosphere.
Other shockingly new/different tracks you might like from then "Are Friends Electric" by Tubeway Army and "Vienna" by Ultravox, both massive sellers due to their unique sound, style, and song construction.
Gary Numan and the New Model Army were doing this from around ‘78 check out Metal, Down in the Park, Are Friends Electric, M.E., Cars. The film Wall-E is essentially. Movie version of M.E.
You may know this, but one singer of Visage (Midge Ure) was also in a group called Ultravox. They had some amazing songs - one called "Vienna" that was HUGE, and is to this day often referenced in UK pop culture (speaking as a yank who was young in the 80s but now lives in England). I would love to see you do Vienna, if you haven't already. OH, and a few more reccos of 80s britpop - - Heaven 17: Let Me Go - Gary Numan: Are Friends Electric, Down in the Park, Cars - If you like a good 80s pop/punk song with French lyrics, you MUST check out Plastic Bertrand's "Ça Plane Pour Moi". - XTC - I think you did Dear God, but since I watch you a lot and subscribe, I sometimes talk to you in my head and say: Nick! PLEASE do more XTC! They were so brilliant, and they were all over the map creativity and genre-wise. Songs to hit from them include: Senses Working Overtime, Love on a Farm Boy's Wages, respectable Street, Burning With Optimism's Flames, Mayor of Simpleton, Wrapped In Grey, Mermaid Smiled, Summer's Cauldron, - seriously, they were so genius. Their spinoff band, The Dukes of Stratosphear, had some great tunes too; the best one imho being 'Brainiac's Daughter'. Thanks again for another great reaction. You're the best. To me you are SignificantNick. :D - Sarah
You are absolutely right nick. I was in my teens in the early 80's and it really did feel like we were at the start of a musical revolution. Each week something new and fresh would arrive. A great time to live through. Please check out Ghosts by Japan, I guarantee it will send chills down your spine.
Another band to check out is early Ultavox with John Foxx as lead singer... 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' (1977) & 'Quiet Men' (1978) would be descent to start with...
Midge Ure, later of Ultravox wrote this, and Steve Strange "sang" it. Steve, a Welshman, died back in 2015 aged only 55. The official video of this is a classic (this version m.ruclips.net/video/UMPC8QJF6sI/видео.html ). It's mad to think this came out 42 years ago. Anyone born in the sixties and seventies knows the video, and how groundbreaking it was.
RIP Steve. Met him a few times in the 90s in Emporium Very nice guy. His coffin was carried by his friends like Boy George and the Kemps from Spandau Ballet.
other Visage members were John McGeoch, Barry Adamson, and Dave Formula of post punk band Magazine. Id recommend Shot by Both Sides, Because Your Frightened, Definitive Gaze by them. If your looking for another mixed language song try Pixies - Vamos. If you want more synth of this era try John Foxx - Underpass.
It's only the chord progression in the chorus that's the same as Being Boiled, and it is identical. The rest of the song and chord structure is quite different and arguably better, if complexity equates to better. There's also a strong similarity to Baccara's, Yes Sir, I Can Boogie just before the verse kicks in. I kid you not. 😊
Steve Strange and some of the other New Romantics that attended his ‘Blitz’ club in London appeared in David Bowie’s video for ‘Ashes to Ashes’, which was released a few months before Fade to Grey. It’s the three people dressed in black walking behind Bowie in his video. Check it out.
great video as usual. thanks to make the effort to speak french. if you want another song with french lyrics inside (not french band) please try hooverphonic "plus profond", thievery corporation "le monde" or "la femme parallel"
As you noted in your reaction, Brigitte Arens performed the French vocals for the song. But for the video you reacted to, which was for a German television program, the woman dancing is Perri Lister who was Billy Idol's girlfriend at the time. Lister was a regular at Blitz, Rusty Egan and Steve Stange's club in Covent Garden. The original and official video had Princess Julia (Julia Fodor) lip-syncing the French vocals. Julia was also a regular at Blitz. As noted elsewhere in the comments Julia and Steve appeared in David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes video. This is a link to the original Godley & Creme directed video... ruclips.net/video/ruYs8BRdwgY/видео.html
Listen to Kim Wilde, she was very popular that times. Kim has a lot of great new-wave songs, like "Kids in America", "Water On Glass" or "View From A Bridge"
🎶Lagartija Nick”😉😄by Bauhaus, iconic band described as “GOFF”-a mix of Goth and the “F OFF” attitude of punk😀. The lead singer you see is Peter Murphy, he went on to do many albums solo with his band He called “The Hundred Men“. He said it’s because they sound like a hundred men:). His solo stuff was really different than Bauhaus. I love both. ruclips.net/video/sdkOtenHb4o/видео.html
You need to go back back to the source the band that inspired all the 80's synth sound, pioneers of the electronic sound 'Kraftwerk' try listening to The Model.
Nice reaction Nick, but you made a boo boo with the music video choice. The original is one of the most iconic music videos, a work of art in itself, the one you selected looks like Strictly Come Dancing!!!
I prefer one word by Kelly Osbourne lol basically a copy of this song. On that note I recommend the new Ozzy song patient number 9 it's pretty good actually.
The ultimate in style over substance. There is plenty of early 80s synth-pop which is more worthy of your interest than this flimsy confection which was fronted by a talentless clotheshorse. You might want to check out Gary Numan ("Are friends electric" or "Cars"), Soft Cell ("Tainted love"), Ultravox ("Vienna").
I fell in love with this song as a teenager over 20 years ago. It remains one of my favourites to this day.
My favourite Visage track of all time is The Damned Don't Cry.
My favourite is Mind of a Toy but Damned Don't Cry also very good.
The late 70s early 80s definitely the best time for British music
I am fascinated by that period. Synth Britannia was a superb documentary.
Absolutely!!! It was a magical time musically
Legendary track … a band full of very talented people.
Steve strange. Rusty Egan, midge Ure , Billy Currie and others … magical

The personnel on this song and the album were from the top drawer of British New Wave and synthpop. An absolute heavyweight line up.

"Scrape Away" by The Jam also closes with the repetition of a French phrase - always wondered what it meant...

"Mind Of A Toy" had a fairly disturbing video!
Also Night Train, the damned don't cry.
@@charliegeorge9393 I liked Night Train, which was released exactly 40 years ago.

I'd start Gary Numan with Tubeway Army's Bombers Fly To Zero

Not a big fan of Ultravox after Foxx left, Foxx's solo work is stellar too. A good choice.
Great song from a great decade.
English band, song in french but N1 in Germany : that’s Europe !! 😂
Welsh singer - Steve Strange, Scottish lyricist and backing vocals Midge Are.
Friend. This song was number 1 in France too, and also in Switzerland.
I want to a club that holds 3000 people handing out fliers and they play this by big dj very moving hard song great 👍 music
Still probably one of the greatest songs and greatest vocals ever made!

Too many brilliant synth bands from that era, would also recommend entire Yazoo album 'Upstairs At Eric's'.

Another great synth-heavy song with English vocals and some French is 'I'm Not Scared' by Eighth Wonder written by Pet Shop Boys.
Grace Jones did some great synth pop with French vocals too.
Need to try Fad Gadget to get that early experimental synthetic sound. Try Back To Nature to start.

Apropos sugestion as this song was developed over time during Gary Numan's first tour. Chris Payne and John Fox were part of Gary's band for the tour.
Basically, the French lyrics are just the same as the English ones. :)
