I was 11 when she won and for the next week or so all anyone was talking about was the bearded lady that won Eurovision. She tore down so many stereotypes and preconceptions that people had and challenged so much queerphobia around Europe. While she isn't quite my personal favourite winner (that honor goes to Jamala) she is without a doubt the most impactful.
To everyone who doesn't know if Wurst is a he or she, this is how Conchita came to be. He was born as Tom Neuwirth. Then after performing in lots of singing competitions, he got asked to host an Austrian singing competition (I forgot the name of it) and he thought 'Why not do it in drag?', but then he realised that he has to shave his beard to do that. So he asked if the woman making it wouldn't mind have a bearded lady hosting her show so the woman making it said yes and Conchita liked it so that is how the bearded lady Conchita Wurst (The Queen of Europe) came to be.

I vividly remember my 11 year old self in awe at this performance. Didn't even know what trans or drag queen meant, but I had a strong emotional connection. This performance is so important to me, it was the first proper LGBT+ representation I got to see. A revolutionary win was an understatement. ❤

Her victory wasn't just for her. It was for anyone who'd ever been bullied, teased, or made fun of for simply being who they are. She showed that it doesn't matter how you look on the outside, as long as you're happy with yourself! And that's what makes her and this song so special.

It means Tom is a man who dress up as a woman whenever he feels like it. He is not a woman trapped in a man's body. So all of you people who - for some strange reason - are very frightened and confused by the dress+beard mix: it is a character, not a real person. But if it was a real person who actually wanted to look like this every day: why would that be a problem for YOU? i dont go around hating men with man boobs, so why be so disturbed by a lady with hair in unusual places?

I vividly remember my 11 year old self in awe at this performance. Didn't even know what trans or drag queen meant, but I had a strong emotional connection. This performance is so important to me, it was the first proper LGBT+ representation I got to see. A revolutionary win was an understatement. ❤

You know what I love most about this? This is the version she sang after she'd won, and at the end she changed to lyrics from "I'll rise up to the sky" to "WE'll rise up to sky", and "I'm gonna fly" to "WE'RE gonna fly".
Her victory wasn't just for her. It was for anyone who'd ever been bullied, teased, or made fun of for simply being who they are. She showed that it doesn't matter how you look on the outside, as long as you're happy with yourself! And that's what makes her and this song so special.
