in response to your discussion about not being able to fully consume the novels you're reading because of your concussion:
i think one of the most powerful shifts in perspective i've had about reading is to realize and truly internalize that you can come back to books! i am not concussed but i do have OCD which makes me afraid that i'm not catching all of the information that i'm reading in a book to the point where i'll read the same page twenty times for no reason other than that it makes me feel less anxious haha. but when i started voicing to myself, "yes, there may be more meaning and complexity to what i am reading right now, but that'll be great to discover when i return to it again," i really began to feel less frustrated with myself for not engaging with the text to its fullest extent (and, thus, avoiding the feelings of inferiority and stupidity that only i was only placing on myself).

this is something i do with adhd too!!!! i stop reading books because i feel like i can only pick them up when i'm the mindset of being able to pick up everything on the page which is obviously never -_- so i tell myself that whatever i pick up is enough and if the book ends up being one of my favourites i can always read it again :)

That's just a powerful thought, I really appreciate reading that. I consume a lot of media regarding books and meta-analysis and interpretation which sometimes makes me feel like I'm not reading the right way or understanding or not seeing topics within a book that I should see but you are right, I can revisit them any time I want.

That’s a great way to loo at it! I do that too because of anxiety. I will read the same sentence over and over because I worry that I’m not fully comprehending what they mean. But that’s a great reminder that I can go back to it later, thank you. ❤️

I got a book of Rilke poems from the library because of you, and i LOVE them, thank you for spreading the word about this really beautiful poet. Best of wishes in your continuing recovery. I suffered from burnout some years back, was off from work for almost 6 months, and it took me around 3 years to really recover. So I completely understand that desperate feeling of having a brain that just will not compute and cooperate, and how isolating and depressing that can feel.

I hope your doing better this week! I suffer with depression, and a number of other things, but I know getting out and walking in nature helps me out. The week before last week was a very bad mental health week for me and I packed up my kids and drove for an hour and a half to get to this ghost town in the middle of the mountains that we havent been to and we just got out and walked and explored and I felt like it was the first time in a long time that I could actually breath. I could tell when we were driving home, I felt better. Im always trying to find new beautiful hiking trails to go walk on. Idk, works for me I think🤷‍♀️ might just be in my head though lol. Hey Emmie. I absolutely adore you. I came across your vlogs only two weeks ago and I am so much in love. The cozy and vintage aesthetic of your videos along with your soothing voice makes your vlogs beautiful. I recently ordered the Phantom of the Opera after watching a video where you recommended it. I can't wait to read it. Currently I am reading Love in the Time of Cholera. Do you know how I came across your vlogs? I am such a nail polish lover, if I see a video the person needs to wear a nail paint, else I won't watch it. Miraculously, I came across one vlog of yours where you were wearing black nail paint and I instantly clicked it. Little did I know your channel would be such a pleasure. I also got to know about dark academia which I knew nothing of and I am so into it now. 😅 I completed my master's in English Literature in 2018 and I really wish I had studied like you are back in my student years😅. Emmie, I know it's a weird suggestion, but I will love to see your nail paint collection. Haha. Lots of love to you. ❤️❤️❤️

I don't know if I would say that writing my journal is a comfort thing for me to do because I honestly kind of need it to stay sane, but whenever I feel down or anxious I write about everything in my diary and it makes me feel like a hundred times more relaxed and calm.
I know that writing might be difficult for you right now but I think that maybe recording yourself speak could have a similar effect of capturing the thoughts and emotions while at the same time preserving them.
Just getting stuff out of my head really helps me to relax.

A few months ago, I read Good Omens and I too was not the biggest fan. Most of the reason was because many of the jokes were designed primarily for British people of which I am not British plus, the book was written for the intention of it becoming a tv show which was Terry Pratchett's last wish before he died. The show is on Amazon Prime and it is pretty funny, many of the jokes make more sense/feel better in the t.v. show as opposed to the book.
However, I do suggest reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman, it is really awesome and very philosophical especially for Americans like me who now see, thanks to the book, Gods in a completely new light. I also recommend reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman which is a fantastic love story.

shel Silverstein poems are really funny and I think they are a good place to start. They show that poems can be really fun and funny. I got this book at Barnes and Noble called the pocket book of poetry and I think it's a good place to start for the older, deeper, classic poems. It's a really pretty, small brown book.

If you're new to reading poetry, my recommendation is to simply read widely. Poetry is a huge, diverse umbrella and there's a LOT to choose from and explore. I agree with the suggestion to try a poetry collection of some kind. I stumbled into poetry this way myself.
Some good ones to start with, in my opinion, are T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Mary Oliver (my absolute favorite of all time, I adore every word she's ever written). For more classical poetry, you could try William Wordsworth, John Keats, Percy Shelley (I'm biased towards the Romantics lol). Unfortunately, I don't have many suggestions for non-English poets besides Rilke as I'm still experimenting with that myself, though I've heard great things about Pablo Neruda.
I'd also recommend reading it out loud so you can really feel the rhythm of the words. There's no right or wrong way to do this, just whatever feels natural to you. And it's okay if you feel like you don't really understand what the poem is saying or what is going on -- we're just here to explore and try something new! Don't worry about reading academically and trying to dissect it unless you find that it helps you enjoy the experience more.
Sorry for the essay! I hope this helps and that you find some new favorite literature! :)

I felt the exact same about Good Omens, it was just to quirky and trying to hard to be funny so I dnfed it at around 100 pages

Hi Emmie! Thank you so much for this. As someone with a chronic health condition I feel you and am so happy you are taking this time for self care! Also- if someone wanted to send you a book, how might one go about it? Totally understand if you are uncomfortable with getting packages from viewers so please don't worry if you would prefer not to be sent things! Thank you and take care!

I had very similar problems with Good Omens as well! I was at most mildly impressed, despite the theme is supposed to be one of my favourites lol So far my favourite book from Neil Gaiman is American Gods, but to be honest Neil Gaiman is not among my favourite authors haha.

Emma! hi! I just wanted to say hello and that your channel is so soothing and it's something I put on almost every morning while I'm drinking tea and getting ready for the day. I like how you often talk about mental health and are more open to talking about it in the future. I have bipolar disorder and ADHD and often experience executive functioning issues. I've found that some books can actually make me feel worse (emotionally, mentally, etc) and really bring me down and can also make reading feel like a chore. Are there any books/types of books that make you feel that way? Additionally, what books (or genre) make you feel better when you are feeling like functioning is harder than usual for you, and/or when you are feeling emotionally and mentally burn out? Hope you can respond! Thank you for being you ☺️🌻🦋

I read Good Omens a few months ago and I had a similar experience. I thought it was funny, but I never laughed out loud, it was more of "hey, this is clever". I enjoyed it overall, but didn't find it hilarious.

Oh yes I have a question! When you write your write your essays and analyze a piece of work, do you apply psychological concepts or is it more of personal critical thinking? 😄
