To me, this is Metallica's most underrated song. The vocals, the lyrics, the humming, it's so deep. Anyone that has personally struggled with addiction, or knows someone who has, can really feel the pain in this song. James is hypnotizing in this.
He should know; he was basically at the height of his addiction at this time. Nearly off the rails internally. I agree. One of the top 5-10 songs in the whole catalogue.
A friend once told me “when you get older you’ll realize how good, load and re load really are… he was totally right! I think many metallica fans hated everything after Black album…. Theyll soon understand!
That's how a lot of Metallica fans work. LOAD/PT II and St. Anger would have been hailed as classics by any other band. Because it's Metallica, and so many people think that the only good albums are the first four, that anything else is just...wrong.
This song touches on multiple subjects including addiction, homelessness and forgiveness but primarily conveys a sense of regret. The protagonist desires forgiveness not only for what he has done but what he knows he will continue to do. My eyes seek reality (He tries to see the truth) My fingers seek my veins (He feels for his veins, so he can stick himself with a needle) There's a dog at your back step, He must come in from the rain (He tries to find shelter from the harsh conditions he finds himself in I fall 'cause I let go (He gives up) The net below has rot away (Nothing/no-one is there to catch him as he falls, all his chances are up) The trash fire is warm (The only comfort he has is that of a trash fire giving him heat and light) No one's safe from the storm (No-one is safe from the effects of drugs) And I can't bare to see, What I've let me be, So wicked and worn (He himself does not know who he has become and shows fatigue from the abuse of drugs) So as I write to you (He is writing the suicide note/letter) What is done and to do (What he has done in his life, and what he is going to do to end it) Maybe you'll understand (Understand all the pain he has been through) And won't cry for this man, 'cause low man is due (He is not worth your tears) Please forgive me (Self explanatory really, he wants forgiveness) Touch clean with a dirty hand (He is cleaning the needle) I touched the clean to the waste (Injects the “clean” needle into his “wasted” skin) So low the sky is all I see (He is in his grave looking up) So you bring this poor dog in from the rain, Though he just wants right back out again (You can give him shelter and put him in rehab, but he just wants to get back out there and look for his next fix) And I cry, to the alley way, Confess all to the rain (With no other shelter, he rests in an alleyway and confesses his sins in the form of the note/letter) But I lie, lie straight to the mirror (He even lies to himself that everything will be alright) One I've broken, to match my face (His abuse of drugs has taken its toll physically)
Growing up, I wasn’t a fan of Load and Reload. As an adult and more mature, these albums have some great songs! This song in particular is one of my favorites in their entire library.
This song breaks my heart every time. The lyrics, my god! It took me 10 years to really appreciate “The Loads” but I love both albums, they are so unique and shows these guys can do anything and do it well. ❤️
These are the same guys that did MoP, One, and Dyer's Eve. The breadth of their talent is incredible. As a Metallica fan since the Black Album came out when I was 10, I've grown to really appreciate Load and Reload. In fact, I listen to them more than any other albums, MoP a close third.

If I ever heard a song of what my life used to be. It would be this. The shame of active addiction. All you want to do is stop. You hate yourself. Yet the needle calls. You surrender. Another reason to hate yourself. I thank God every day. I've been sober now 4 years. Thank you Metallica. This is a masterpeice.
The hated and commonly dubbed as "commercial records" Load and Reload just keep showing that Metallica knew exactly what they were doing when recorded them and clearly puts this band at another level. This music is a perfect example of the complexity and diversity of their enormous melodic range. Metallica is not just a metal band. They are true musicians, way ahead on their peers time...

Metallica created music that will live FOREVER. For a long time I didn't want to listen to anything but Metallica because once you have had the best nothing else matters!!!!

They rock soooooo damn much and are filled with some amazing songs. 🎵 I cry to the alleyway Confess all to the rain But I lie, lie straight to the mirror. The one I’ve broken to match my face 🎵 I remember listening to this line in college thinking how amazing it was. Still not too bad. I’m old! 😂
On “Low Man’s Lyric”, singer James Hetfield is taking on the role of a homeless drug addict. And based on the lyrics, this character is indeed a “low man”. He has come to realize that the path he has chosen in life is a self-destructive one. Thus he is begging for forgiveness from the addressee, who reads as if it may be a loved one. Yet simultaneously, he is also well aware that his addiction still has a hold on him. So his disposition throughout is one of humility, or perhaps more accurately we can say self-pity. Indeed whereas he is apparently seeking some level of sympathy from the addressee, at the same time he is also telling this person not to feel sorry for him. For ultimately it can be deemed that he feels this unfavorable fate which has been cast upon him is the one he deserves.
Yeah I dusted off the Load albums recently just to see as it’s been a while. Firstly this song is SERIOUSLY underrated (although I guess “nothing” will always be their go to ballad for live shows). Secondly these albums didn’t deserve the flack the got at the time. Some of the songs were pretty heavy imo, but the only difference being their abandoning of any thrash. So no thrash but other than that there’s some heavy stuff on there. Also the quality control for some of the filler songs could have been higher, but I didn’t mind when they can write stuff like this.
This song is so fucking beautiful, the guitar is so fucking beautiful and James is so fucking beautiful I love him so fucking much. Well not just james, but metallica. Fuck I love them. Update : it maybe sounds too dramatic but this is literally my comfort song especially right now 😔
