At the age of 20, Schubert put to music a poem by Matthias Claudius entitled "Death and the Maiden". The lied portrays a maiden begging for death to pass her by, and Death trying to persuade. The words from his song and Claudius's poem are as follows:
Maiden:
Stay away! Oh, stay away!
Go, fierce Death!
I am still young, please go!
And do not touch me.
Death:
Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender vision!
I am a friend, and come not to hurt you.
Be of good cheer! I am not cruel,
You will sleep softly in my arms!
Thank you for that. This is one of my favourite pieces but I did not know the words to Claudius's poem.
@@RootlessNZ I second your thanks exactly!
How on earth did those great composers think of four, eight, fifteen instruments together and put the same amount of passion to each of them!
I can hear some mistakes, too. That's the beauty of a live performance. We all make mistakes. I agree with the other comments; this is well done and beautiful. Thank you.
Although my first instrument was a flute, during and after college I acquired a taste for String Quartets. And I have heard live concerts with mistakes also. Yet this quartet is still up there with the best.
and thats why theres no mistakes!!
In my teen, I listened to Schubert over and over again. Immortal romantic and severe ..
Thank you Meridian Ensemble, I have enjoyed this many times, and will so long as it's here. Very sincere performance
Great recording, I love that we can hear the viola clearly for a change. In most recordings it's basically onhearable unless you know the part.
Thanks!
I know that English is not your mother tongue but, watch out, for the spelling police are about.
Agreed. A great job of microphone placement and balance by the performers. I've helped produce bluegrass bands and balance with a simple two microphone set up is one of the great challenges in recording and production.
And the positioning of the viola at the front is interesting. Was this a deliberate move by the recording manager?
A really good job with one of the most difficult pieces in the entire repertoire. Congratulations to all the performers.
And you are in a position to know!
Indeed!!
my favorite schubert quartet, as a violist i appreciate the strong violist here thanks!!!!
Truly wonderful - I don't think I've ever found the Presto so exciting! They deserved more than the perfunctory applause they received.
It's quite mesmerizing that such beauty could be created by just four people and their instruments.
Well said.
I think this is a fabulous performance! It's one of my favorite recordings, especially the Presto. And I spend most of everyday listening to a very wide range of wonderful music.
The Maiden:
Pass me by, o pass me by,
Go wild skeleton!
I am still young: go, dear one,
And touch me not!
Death:
Give me your hand, o fair and tender form!
I am your friend; I do not come to punish.
Be of good cheer! I am not wild,
You shall sleep softly in my arms
by Matthias Claudius.
This lovely sad poem that inspired the 20 year old Schubert
Arnold Steinhardt of the Guarneri String Quartet elaborates in " Indivisible by Four"
La doncella:
Pasa de largo. oh, pasa de largo.
Vete loco esqueleto!
Aun soy joven: vete, querido,
Y no me toques.
Muerte:
Dame tu mano. Oh querida y dulce forma!
Soy tu amiga; no vengo a dar castigo.
Ser de buenos sentimientos! No estoy loca.
The hours of work that went into this are evident. Beautiful! One of my very favorite works of all time. Thank you for sharing.
my first recording was by the Taneyev Quartet and I have loved it ever since. About this recording ... Beautiful
Wonderful performance by such young people! THRILLING!
Such beautiful playing and performance of Schubert!
Schubert's life and this music inspired me to write a poem, which I did three years ago.
so did i!
Wonderful artists ! The presto move reminds me so much of pirate music :)
Complete;y gorgeous. my all time favourite music beautifully performed.
The specific masterpiece certainly brings the listener to entire different world, for sure
A lot of salutations to all the performers, who made me exuberant
amazing second movement and a very intense ending, superb performance indeed.
Wonderful, wonderful music. What more can one say?
It's something about the way that Schubert configures the strings - warm and mellow yet a slight jaggedness to produce the tension. He is fabulous.

i like there part where they are playing string instruments
Its a very strong point

Totally reinvigorating....must listen to this while I drive.
I enjoyed every moment of my life with this kind of music, is just amazingly beautiful..!!
Great piece, I was introduce to it on the superb Polanski movie of the same title, loved it ever since.
Descriptivo,bello...obra de mi compositor favortito.
Death of the Maiden
For me, powerfully enraptured my mind and soul…
Great performance, I watched it many times already!
This viola player knows what's up!
Wonderful!
I like the part in 8:13 when the violins alternate with the viola and the cello with the same melodies to come together at the end :)
Great music performed well. I am grateful to be able to view it being created. Bravo1
Yl0
a very fine performance
An enjoyable performance as always from these players. Thank you very much.
Schubert Te amamos
once you realy enjoy shubert strings quartet then you capture classical music
I think I saw Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley in the audience...
good performance, i recently performed it with my quartet and i understand the challenge of confronting it and maintaining Schubert's intentions/vision. (don't do all the repeats it makes it so much longer) but it was a good performance.
this made me feel alive again
I'm not sure why the quartet isn't credited. I found this with a Google search, but I'm pretty sure it's correct.
Meridian Ensemble String Quartet:

Johnny Chang, violin II
Whitney Bullock, viola
Olive Chen, cello
I think you did not click on "show more", Peter.
Also in the first 15ish secs of the video
Peter Hess It's in the first ten second of the video
While I heard this before, Red Dead Redemption 2 brought me back here. Great mission and greater music choice.
Wonderful - Thanks for sharing!
Ha. I remember the 'ol man playing this over and over. It drove me crazy.. LOL, Well, one time Me and my Guitar started to jam with it. LOL You want fireworks? I got them. Before my hand was messed up.(disabled) I could have jammed with any of them. But still. Amazing work crew. Blessing from a fan...
Thanks! Nice and lovely, I was wonder wich instruments you play. Very nice performance and good recording! All the best
The II mvt. music appears in Crumb's quartet, Black Angels. Played with the bow above the left hand I think.
Near the whole of minute 24:00 is spectacular -- especially starting at the crescendo around 24:25
Incredibly beautiful. Thank you! Gracias!
great quartet!
bravo viola!
elle part bravo a viola chelo violín y violin
In a forty minute piece... that sounds amazing by the way... you can hear mistakes? It's like they're making mistakes every, you know...thousand bars or so.
This is, no doubt, great music by a great composer. The playing deserves at least 8/10. As for the title, it's rather like 'Tempest' in Beethoven's famous piano sonata -- that is, it gives an indication of the atmosphere permeating the music.
Outstanding Performance! thanks guys!
very nice music
very well played
The cello part at 1:35 is my favourite part of the whole quartet.
This was left for us to write
As death conceals his face when he seduces the maiden, here we see the reverse, the violinist with thin white arms and ivory skin remains hidden behind a sweep of golden hair. Each performance is an attempt to reach perfection. The quartet is on that journey and the music is profound.
Glad I'm not the only listener distracted at times. She is lovely. Hands off, Death.
Does it ever get better than this?
Esplendido! Gracias!
Wow!! So well done!
13:04 best part
¡Grandioso!
the biggest like I have ever given, amazing.
When was this recorded? It looks more recent than I remember.. when I and my father bought our first CD this was it. I can remember the same mistakes they make here. At least, some of them.
sublime
Wspaniały występ supermodelki skrzypaczki Dominiki Dancewicz.
Anyone knows where the part is that venetian snares sampled in "This bitter earth" ?
thank you for your good performance.
27:05 Mayor's Party in Red Dead Redemption 2
Magistral ! where can we buy it ?
good!
The best version of this Quartet is by Lindsay Quartet. But this one come pretty close.
It was in movie with the same name by Sigourney Weaver, but the year is 1994.

I love the composition, but its not one of my favorite performances. Individually the players are very good. I don't see much of a blend as a quartet. It feel like its a competition to see who can play their part the most accurately.
Brendan Slocumb Precisely! I don't understand why people get so upset with a little criticism. I wouldn't call it terrible but I wouldn't they were quite ready for a recording. The biggest problem for me is that their rhythms were not quite synced up. They just need more time with it and to listen to each other more.
can't agree. i think they are great together.
Lovely
Saben como se llama el cuarteto ???
went and listened to some of it, then Death and the Maiden, to restore my old prejudices, just don’t have the refined tastes of some I suppose
super!
Dominika seems like a second violinist forced into playing this difficult first violin part. Her command of the high notes is doubtful at best. She didn't even try to play the high D at the end of the Presto.
Somehow, it sounds great. Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Professor.
Oops. Clash note at 20.13. How did that happen?
You mean at 20:23
Dominka rocks!
Not enough death. Too much maiden.
Death is supposed to be inconspicuous, like a fox in a flock of sheep
Trying to play this is too much death and no maiden.
I loved you comment.
they keep slowing down or is it me.
Nice ...
Is that what you have to say?
sehr gut gespielt
Cyka Blyat
This first violin is great! I guess she is from the Russian School?
