Deku brought up a genuinely good point that makes him wanting to save Eri not look like just a reckless endangering of the mission. I get that Mirio is all for not looking suspicious, but even Overhaul is aware that Eri does not look happy about being even near him. The fact that Mirio was cheerily talking to Overhaul and didn't immediately try to get Eri away from him obviously raised red flags in Overhaul's mind, because what hero wouldn't save someone who is in danger? Ironically, after the initial shock from Deku, he was the far less suspicious one later in the interaction.

As someone who’s been unable to save a kid I know was in an abusive household, realized it too late, and then suffered sleeplessly for three days before I had to finally accept I couldn’t do anything as I was just the night babysitter for a friend of the kid. And had no way of acting without making things worse for the kid. Anyway the next couple of episodes hit so close to home. But also cathartic to see a rescue actually happen. All I can do is pray to the gods and universe that the kid is safe now. And maybe a couple years down the line I’ll see them in public, safe and healthy.

We get an interesting glimpse of both Allmight and Sir Nighteye's iron wills here. They're both fanatical in their ways, Allmight to the symbol of peace, Sir Nighteye to Allmight and practicality. I find it interesting that we indirectly get a hint that Sir Nighteye's a better teacher than Allmight. Unlike Allmight, he refuses to empower a friend's self-destructive path (he's determined to stop Allmight from hurting himself and point out how self-destructive his path is, when you compare that to how Allmight reacts to Deku's constant limb breaking...). No matter how hard it is or how much it hurts him Sir Nighteye is at least willing to seriously TRY and stop him.

I'm really dating myself with this reference but, when I was a kid, I used to watch this cartoon called "Toxic Crusaders". The main villain (Dr. Killemoff) had a henchman, named Psycho, who had the ability to predict the future. A running gag in the show was that Dr. Killemoff would explain his evil plan to his underlings, and then Psycho would chime in with a prediction of how The Toxic Crusaders would thwart it. Dr. Killemoff would ignore him, and his plan would inevitably fail the way Psycho predicted; leading to Psycho smugly saying "I told you so".
As serious as this scene is, I can't help but picture Night Eye saying something similar to All Might in that tone; and can't stop myself from laughing, as a result.

While of course I know the outcome in this particular story I'm incredibly curious to see Montana's full take on this age old debate. Is the future set in stone or is it shaped by each decision we make? Does knowing the future allow one to alter things to create a new outcome or does that knowledge only ensure that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy? I absolutely love these types of hypotheticals and the philosophical debates they breed and now I feel like going back and replaying the Soul Reaver games for the millionth time lol

This episode is my absolute favorite of the season. Not knocking down the other big hitters because we all know how great THOSE are, but this one episode just goes SO far as to change everything. It’s not just pivotal on what’s to come but it is just perfect at showing us so much context behind the scenes of previous events too.
Starting off with Mirio and Deku just chatting on patrol. I’m not exactly sure what Mirio knows regarding Deku’s Hosu circumstances but DOES know he was in Hosu AND near the mess. Nighteye likely knows Deku DID basically defeat Stain and got more nuance info. But I LOVE how their interaction goes in sub. Especially when Deku says his hero name. Mirio IMMEDIATELY stops and says Deku? And you’re ok with that? Mirio might be Mr. Sunshine but he heard Bakugo’s bullying taunt just like everyone NOT Uraraka. And Deku of course decides to NOT clarify. Literally anyone OTHER than Uraraka only hears him say worthless is his hero name. And Deku wears it like a badge of honor that worked its way to make him a hero….but I still think you need a healthier hero name there, kiddo. Might want to sit down with your girl and think of something NOT publicly confusing/conflicting and has a similar meaning. I’d go with “Willpower.” Personally to be like the “I can do it” title. Since no one knows Uraraka’s new take on his name when people call him Deku on the field, they are essentially calling him hero. And that’s why no one BUT Uraraka calls him Deku outside of the field because it’s still basically their special secret of sorts. Not even Iida.
Then we just dive right into the single largest question that is posed by this season. What kind of hero are you. The kind who waits and looks for the best possible opportunity to corner every last loose end possible at once or the one who charges forward when there’s trouble the moment you see it because nothing should be gambled? And it’s not much to see where Deku and Mirio lie…and by the same token, where All-Might and Nighteye stand as well. What’s the best choice? And to have this internal debate over a child that they technically have no proof she’s in true danger despite EVERY MOMENT of body language is just SCREAMING she is. What would have been the choice here? Sadly…it’s the one Deku was prevented from doing. It’s true there was no evidence, but this is a situation that by now the Nighteye agency has enough probable cause to get her away considering the surrounding crime scenes they investigate. And if Overhaul lashed out the moment they try, it’s all the more proof. Deku and Mirio are both CRAZY fast. And this field is beneficial to them both before Overhaul. I don’t think this could ever be the POSSIBILITY of a CPS wellness check let’s put it that way.
Especially since they feel the need to show Overhaul blowing a guy inside out IN FRONT of Eri without even acknowledging her as she starts to have a breakdown AFTER SHE ESCAPED. What thought process to RETURN to this environment. And worse, when he DOES acknowledge her, he’s guiding her to an operating table. AND he’s bringing Shigaraki into her environment from the sounds of it. And he’s blaming HER for how he got his hands dirty. Machiavellians aren’t considered as well known as Psychopaths and Narcissists are but they are all right around the same danger level. Overhaul is a prime example why they are so freaking dangerous.
Sir Nighteye is NOT of this logic though. Both Mirio and Sir Nighteye are the wait and see type quirks AND mindset. And both are detective class heroes. And I would even say that’s their primary hero class despite them being other classes. It’s all about evidence and a smooth arrest. And while Nighteye scolds about how he can’t save whoever whenever, it’s more accurate to say YET. All-Might COULD just do that because of how fast he was and how invulnerable he was to nearly EVERY quirk. Even quirks that can hurt him are just simply nowhere fast enough. Theres more to it BECAUSE of the evidence factor. But Deku does NOT like this circumstance.
2 details for Sir Nighteye to remember. 1 is he said he should have used foresight on the two of you. Deku and Mirio both. And the other is Bubble Girl and Nighteye are hilariously normal in this conversation and investigation. She’s perfectly ok being around him after that last interaction and there’s no humor in practice while they investigate. I’m not going to claim this is fact but I wouldn’t be surprised if the two of them were actually close altogether. Just a hunch. But I do know him sending Deku and Mirio together is his way of showing there’s nothing that Deku can show Mirio about being a hero but Mirio can show him everything. The irony is that Deku’s personality of being protective of Eri is exactly what made everything feel much more exposed and got new intel.
Gang Orca TOTALLY beat the tar out of Todoroki and Bakugo. I just have ZERO doubts. I think he’s the main hero involved in the provisional license program altogether. While it’s rough to see Todoroki all bandaged up it IS satisfying to hear Bakugo struggling and him being forced to hear that OF COURSE Deku got a work studies and is now field active. He has to show it in the way of aggression towards Deku because OF COURSE. But at least Deku is winning.
I HAVE to point out Deku here as he’s more and more focused on Eri’s predicament and what went down between Nighteye and All-Might for him to be scolded so thoroughly for WANTING TO HELP. He’s not ignoring Mineta, that’s not how Deku functions. His eyes turn cold and his face is blank. He’s apathetic. I won’t say the EXACT nature of this circumstance but the natural enemy of empathy is apathy. And for an empath, that’s EXTREMELY rare and quite frankly can be seen as dangerous BECAUSE of how empaths function. He’s getting trapped in his head as he loses concentration. This isn’t like Deku. While it doesn’t last it IS a major warning flag for a certain condition. I’ll leave it at that and say this isn’t the last time this is seen. But he does find one of the methods out by venting his frustrations at long last with All-Might.
This conversation is a LONG time coming. All-Might has to answer for his terrible teaching. Not just because of his UA teaching…but because this man is just NOT teaching Deku like a successor. That alone is a VERY special circumstance and you don’t get the leeway of looking at it from the perspective of a father figure. Your successor always has to answer for your mistakes as well as your relationships. And in this case your enemies as well. All-Might hid this whole circumstance from Deku and now he’s getting scolded up and down for following his ideals that All-Might has helped push him towards. There was no warning because ALL-MIGHT didn’t want to talk about it. Nighteye is taking his frustration out on Deku BECAUSE of their circumstances. Deku is understandably FURIOUS. And worse, there’s an even bigger secret waiting at the bottom of this.
All-Might makes a reveal that both explains his actions across the show but also makes his bad teaching moments even WORSE. It’s not that I don’t get where he’s coming from. Getting your body completely internally rearranged and then told by the guy whose quirk foresees an unavoidable future that you are GUARANTEED to die an UNSPEAKABLY gruesome death…I don’t blame his hesitancy with information. When you look back at his old conversations he is treating every single one of them like they are his last conversation with this person. Like he’s making his peace and insuring their final memories of him are uplifting and supportive. And of course he doesn’t want to admit to anyone he knows he’s dying. And that’s what makes his last stand with AFO even BETTER. The layers of torture in that fight make him think how is this going to get worse? Each and every layer he attacks. And only when AFO calls out Izuku Midoriya as the 9th does All-Might just ROCKET back into the fight screaming NOT HERE NOT NOW, I WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN IF HE’S IN THE WARPATH. And then that just makes his pleading with Inko to be his father even MORE impactful. And she tells him don’t give up. That’s not an option with how much we need you. HE needs you. EVERY heroic speech, EVERY hesitant conversation and EVERY time he’s watching Deku just BEAMING with pride. This declaration of his demise makes All-Might 1000x better.
That being said, his moments when he just…DOESN’T give Deku the attention he needs, or goes even FURTHER out of his way to teach and inform his successor is EVEN MORE aggravating. ESPECIALLY in Deku’s exploding arm era. It took him not 1, not 2, not 5 but over 2 DOZEN BROKEN BONES before All-Might gets a MAJOR scolding from Recovery Girl WHY AREN’T YOU SAYING ANYTHING TO HIM?! He could have said something after the 1st time and gone with higher urgency on such a MASSIVE time crunch! But all he said was “The way to control OFA is to FEEL IT!” The fact Gran Torino who IS NOT a holder got him full cowling in an EVENING just…All-Might WHY?! And he’s STILL withholding information! We KNOW he is because of the shadows in Deku’s OFA vision! He COMPLETELY diverted that conversation! And thank GOD Deku is calling him out and FINALLY getting angry at him. And of course also understanding his position to be so concerned.
What an absolute masterpiece episode. This is easy top 10 episodes overall for me.

    • @Kaempfdog
      @Kaempfdog 10 месяцев назад +8

Also just functionally, LOVE the conversation as a standalone and not just a game changer for the past and present. The voice acting is just PHENOMENAL. Nighteye is SO desperate to get All-Might to stop so the conditions of his future aren’t set in stone. But the complete surrender of the inevitable for All-Might because it simply doesn’t matter AFTER LOSING MULTIPLE BODY SYSTEMS. To give EVERYONE the comfort he can…it hurts those closest to him. Selflessness at its rawest sense is incredibly hard to watch. To give THAT much of yourself with nothing to gain. It’s painful. I get why people get suspicious around it because they assume there’s strings attached. And when they aren’t, it goes from suspicious to scary when you care about them. Someone willing to break themselves for others is ROUGH. And just like his successor, All-Might is one of them. I love that Gran Torino who ALSO looks like he got mild injuries from the 1st AFO match says nothing because he knows nothing will change even if he does. Even if they ALL do. All-Might HAS to be All-Might. And it just leads up to Deku being ALL-MIGHT’S game changer. I may know I’m going to die but I’m going to insure I’m with you and live with and for you. I’m not done and I won’t let anything stop me from being there for you AND others. (I couldn’t fit this paragraph in the comment.)

You aren't superior or more noble for setting impossible goals, Deku can't and won't save every suffering person in the world, yet alone every suffering person he sees with his own eyes. Mirio's realistic goals don't set him behind Deku, and if anything they prepare him to go even farther than that. Once you complete one goal you move on to the next.

Its weird how against Deku, Sir Nighteye was. It seems like its bc he was quirkless, does he not know that AM was too? Maybe the charisma? Maybe Sir's fanboy-ness is blinding him, bc I doubt that AM was always that amazing, like Deku is only 16... Plenty of room to grow.

Seeing All Might and Nighteye's falling out for a second time made me question something.

@@arielmartinez94yeah I know it was part of the original design his mom made, but buy not wearing it he is endangering his mom since he is showing he face to the villains. One of the should have abducted or killed her by this point.
Some people might say All Might did the same, but he didn't since he completely changed what he looked like before he went into battle. It wasn't until the News broadcasted his true form during the all for one fight that anyone other than Izuku and UA staff knew what he looked like.
