I was promoted to Supervisor a year ago. I haven’t had any training or guidance while on this position. I have learned all I know on the go. I have had many difficulties and frustrations due to this. Even though my managers are aware of the lack of training and tools, they still expect me to know how to do everything. I’ve had to research how to’s, look up tools and ways to help manage people, but it’s not been easy at all.

That part about expectations, is so true. I've worked with managers who thought I was able to use the powers of telepathy to know what was important to them and what context they were operating in. And I know I was guilty of this as a new manager because I assumed if I knew everyone knew. Better to overshare, overexplain, and repeat information than for that information to be a secret.

These are great insights, Mak. Talking about B and C coworkers - I also think managers often spend too more time focused on their underperforming and marginal employees, rather than their superstars. They take them for granted. Maybe instead of 80% focus on the average and under performing employees, and 20% on their superstars, they reverse that number. Just my thoughts. 🙂

Interesting. I've never had a manager who knew enough to "show" me how something is done. They just take and take and take and attempt to compensate for it by giving mediocre raises. They often don't know how to do the work. And if they attempt to some work, they include me to help them get it done (never the other way around).

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had managers like this. That’s terrible.
