They did a wonderful thing but considering that no one is perfect, then you can't say with certainty how he would feel about today. She still speaks of that with great reverence some 20 years later. I will remember this undeserved honor until the moment I die.

When my eighth grade class visited Mount Vernon, one of my classmates and their mother who are descendants or Martha Washington were given the opportunity to lay the wreath l, and I got to read the prayer. It honestly was an amazing and beautiful experience.
He's on the quarter, and the dollar bill. Our Nations Capital is named after him, as is the State of Washington. Presidents Day was created to honor him. We have a giant obelisk in the middle of the National mall named after him. There are 31 Counties named after him, and 71 cities or townships. Something tells me we aren't likely to forget him.

Years ago, my husband and I visited Mount Vernon and bought a cutting of the original boxwood! It is over 20 years old, and is a large bush at this time. I cherish this!
Original boxwoods can easily be created from cuttings from your bush. If you did the relatively simple work and presented it to the estate they could replant the bushes.

@M H Uhhh no he didn’t... He was in fact not a very religious man until his later years. He was often found praying as well when his daughter in law Patsy Custis passed away.
I believe that I’m one of the few, non family members, to have entered the Washington crypt. As an African American, it’s a particular point of pride. I happened to be on the grounds doing some work. A job which culminated with the preparation to build the new gift shop. It was an honor after hearing about the former slave that designed and built the crypt. Just walking past the Alabaster sarcophagus of George and Martha, there’s a quiet reverence, like stepping back in time. I got to open the door to the crypt and peer inside. It was just after a huge storm had hit and they wanted to check and make sure it hadn’t been compromised. As a history buff and future Archives Technician, it doesn’t get any better. My next highest honor was to be in the same room with the Declaration of Independence as it was last being restored. Part of what can only be a mass blessing of great timing. This not lost of the fact that I recognized the standing of a black man, in the days of each event. We’ve come a long way, in a relatively short time, but we still have far to go. 🙏🏽

I think of the bitter cold of Valley Forge, a ragged army survived, inspired by their leader, with them in the fridgid temps. Our country held on by a string....and survived. Thank you General. You planted the seeds, and quite a tree has grown.
A little over two years ago my wife had to attend a conference in DC so she and I went without our children (a VERY rare thing). We both had wanted to tour Mount Vernon for years and being in DC and kid free we decided to do just that. I knew nothing about the tour or the ceremony and it just so happened that we were standing near his tomb about the time the ceremony was to start and I actually got to participate by placing the wreath inside the tomb. That was a very surreal moment for me knowing I was standing right next to the father of our country and a moment I will appreciate the rest of my life.
We are all delighted that we could provide you with such a meaningful experience at Washington’s beloved estate, and hope the two of you can visit us again soon!
The actual caskets and bones are in this tomb? Has scientist or archeologists ever studied them? The hair, clothing, teeth, for DNA to make a actual record our first president and first first lady. I think it would be interesting to scientist and the public. Plus photographs of the clothing and shoes any Jewelry.

We even have actual hair remains of George Washington as well which have already been studied by scientist, DNA to I believe. Not sure on the teeth part.

Went there in 1976 & again in 1991. It is a great place to visit. If you get the chance go visit there 😁 you won't be disappointed. Arlington is right around the corner.

I went to mount Vernon when I was 13. It’s a pretty neat place, almost everything in the mansion is original, and you’re not allowed to take pictures of the inside because of everything being so historic
I have a 5x great grandfather named George Thomas Ewing Sr. who served throughout the Revolution, and was with George Washington at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777.I am proud of my GG for fighting for this nation, and grateful to General Washington for being his Commanding Officer , [ and keeping him alive], and for being the first President of the United States of America. I visited Mr. Vernon in 1966 when I was 11 years old. I still have a vivid memory of the house, the grounds and the tomb. Beautiful home. I would have liked to have lived there. I could see how Washington loved it. I could just imagine him sitting on the porch in the afternoon, enjoying the view, visiting with family and friends.

i’ve been lucky enough to visit mount vernon twice. i first went when i was 13. such a beautiful home and so was memorial service in front of his grave.
We would barely know who George Washington was or what he did had it not been for the Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette brought courage, incredible enthusiasm and drive, significant personal financials and ultimately French resources including money, ships and soldiers. He was a fundamentalist for personal freedom for everyone. That and only that turned the tide against the British forces at Yorktown lead by Cornwallis. Prior to that turning point the vast majority of the war were losses and retreats. America had a great General in Washington but did not have the resources. France, due to Lafayette, changed everything. Sadly Lafayette's involvement to implement personal freedom in France ended up with the horrendous French Revolution. A MOSt wonderful book on Lafayette is by Harold Unger. An incredible read from many perspectives.
And then about 20 plus years later us Brits had to fight a very long war with Napoleon B who made France a dictatorship and a war mongering threat to the world - funny how the tide of history changes !!!!!

I ate a pear from one of Georges pair tree, my 4th grade class was on a field trip and i saw a guy picking up pears that fell on ground so i asked if i could have one. He tossed one to me and my friend but he told us not to tell anyone because he didnt have enough for everyone.

The last time I saw former President Washington's tomb was around 2008. I never got to enter the tomb as it was being renovated and repaired. It's the most quiet place on the property. Absolutely peaceful and serene. I miss it, and I'd love to go back to Mount Vernon one day.

I was there as a kid in the 60’s. I finally went back in 2015. Loved it so much, I went back in 2016. Lots to see at Mt Vernon. Colonial Williamsburg is a favorite destination as well.
My wife is Ukrainian. You only get a sense for how amazing Washington was when you explain his life to people from other countries. She was stunned at all of the chapters of his life.

I will never forget the feeling of Mt.Vernon. I was kid, surrounded by tourists, and it was loud, but there is a certain sense of peace there that I honestly miss. It was beautiful, but I've been in prettier places...it was the atmosphere though, that really separated it from anywhere else I'd been.
Brought my daughter last November to pay our respects to the Father of Our Country, as we are both great admirers. The day before we had toured the White House, and we were rightfully impressed. But, upon visiting Mount Vernon we were simply awestruck. My daughter can be quite a little chatterbox; she is very happy go lucky, fittingly, as we approached Washington's tomb she became very quiet, and no signs were needed to remind her to be respectful. As we walked away, she told me very matter-of-fact, that George Washington is the greatest American who has ever lived. I couldn't argue with her.

Got to visit there about 20 years ago. No wreaths, flags, or open gates like the video has. Washington had a great view of the Potomac outside his back door. All in all a great place to visit.

It's amazing to learn about past presidents, let alone the very first president of the United States. I've actually seen President Kennedy's burial site at Arlington Cemetery, but I would love to travel around and see tombs and burial sites just like President Washington and Martha Washington. Mount Vernon looks like a very beautiful place to live, and the general made the right choice to be buried there. His home. His sanctuary. His grounds. Thank you for this video. I would love to visit this beautiful place someday. President Washington would not want to see what is going on in the country, completely opposite of what he wanted after he resigned from the presidency. I believe that I’m one of the few, non family members, to have entered the Washington crypt. As an African American, it’s a particular point of pride. I happened to be on the grounds doing some work. A job which culminated with the preparation to build the new gift shop. It was an honor after hearing about the former slave that designed and built the crypt. Just walking past the Alabaster sarcophagus of George and Martha, there’s a quiet reverence, like stepping back in time. I got to open the door to the crypt and peer inside. It was just after a huge storm had hit and they wanted to check and make sure it hadn’t been compromised. As a history buff and future Archives Technician, it doesn’t get any better. My next highest honor was to be in the same room with the Declaration of Independence as it was last being restored. Part of what can only be a mass blessing of great timing. This not lost of the fact that I recognized the standing of a black man, in the days of each event. We’ve come a long way, in a relatively short time, but we still have far to go. 🙏🏽

A little over two years ago my wife had to attend a conference in DC so she and I went without our children (a VERY rare thing). We both had wanted to tour Mount Vernon for years and being in DC and kid free we decided to do just that. I knew nothing about the tour or the ceremony and it just so happened that we were standing near his tomb about the time the ceremony was to start and I actually got to participate by placing the wreath inside the tomb. That was a very surreal moment for me knowing I was standing right next to the father of our country and a moment I will appreciate the rest of my life.
We are all delighted that we could provide you with such a meaningful experience at Washington’s beloved estate, and hope the two of you can visit us again soon!
The actual caskets and bones are in this tomb? Has scientist or archeologists ever studied them? The hair, clothing, teeth, for DNA to make a actual record our first president and first first lady. I think it would be interesting to scientist and the public. Plus photographs of the clothing and shoes any Jewelry.

I went to mount Vernon when I was 13. It’s a pretty neat place, almost everything in the mansion is original, and you’re not allowed to take pictures of the inside because of everything being so historic

I visited Mr. Vernon in 1966 when I was 11 years old. I still have a vivid memory of the house, the grounds and the tomb. Beautiful home. I would have liked to have lived there. I could see how Washington loved it. I could just imagine him sitting on the porch in the afternoon, enjoying the view, visiting with family and friends.
When I was 10 years old I sat on the rocking chairs overlooking the river on the back porch. Im 62 now and still remember it vividly

i’ve been lucky enough to visit mount vernon twice. i first went when i was 13. such a beautiful home and so was memorial service in front of his grave.
We are still visitors here so learn to grow and love while we're here.
We would barely know who George Washington was or what he did had it not been for the Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette brought courage, incredible enthusiasm and drive, significant personal financials and ultimately French resources including money, ships and soldiers. He was a fundamentalist for personal freedom for everyone. That and only that turned the tide against the British forces at Yorktown lead by Cornwallis. Prior to that turning point the vast majority of the war were losses and retreats. America had a great General in Washington but did not have the resources. France, due to Lafayette, changed everything. Sadly Lafayette's involvement to implement personal freedom in France ended up with the horrendous French Revolution.
A MOSt wonderful book on Lafayette is by Harold Unger. An incredible read from many perspectives.

I am reading a biography about Washington, and I do say their relationship was simply immaculate. It is quite bittersweet how Lafayette could end up being so close to Washington.
I ate a pear from one of Georges pair tree, my 4th grade class was on a field trip and i saw a guy picking up pears that fell on ground so i asked if i could have one. He tossed one to me and my friend but he told us not to tell anyone because he didnt have enough for everyone.

The last time I saw former President Washington's tomb was around 2008. I never got to enter the tomb as it was being renovated and repaired.
It's the most quiet place on the property. Absolutely peaceful and serene.
I miss it, and I'd love to go back to Mount Vernon one day.

I will never forget the feeling of Mt.Vernon. I was kid, surrounded by tourists, and it was loud, but there is a certain sense of peace there that I honestly miss. It was beautiful, but I've been in prettier places...it was the atmosphere though, that really separated it from anywhere else I'd been.

Brought my daughter last November to pay our respects to the Father of Our Country, as we are both great admirers. The day before we had toured the White House, and we were rightfully impressed. But, upon visiting Mount Vernon we were simply awestruck. My daughter can be quite a little chatterbox; she is very happy go lucky, fittingly, as we approached Washington's tomb she became very quiet, and no signs were needed to remind her to be respectful. As we walked away, she told me very matter-of-fact, that George Washington is the greatest American who has ever lived. I couldn't argue with her.

If you would like a little pick-me-up, you should check out Captain Jack of the modocs. One of the last tribes to fight in the Indian Wars. Northern California around Mount Shasta was their home. Pretty fucking awesome story. West Point still to this day, teaches the strategies of Captain Jack and his Warriors.
So cool to see the continuity of American history; the bones of our first POTUS and leader of the American revolution being tended to by a future citizen some 218 years later is enough to give any contemporary American pause...

I don't know why, but watching this brought me to tears. They just rushed in. I think it's because I feel so blessed to be living in such a beautiful and free country, but at the same time feel that we are living right on the edge of it crumbling out from our feet. It's amazing to learn about past presidents, let alone the very first president of the United States. I've actually seen President Kennedy's burial site at Arlington Cemetery, but I would love to travel around and see tombs and burial sites just like President Washington and Martha Washington. Mount Vernon looks like a very beautiful place to live, and the general made the right choice to be buried there. His home. His sanctuary. His grounds. Thank you for this video. I would love to visit this beautiful place someday. President Washington would not want to see what is going on in the country, completely opposite of what he wanted after he resigned from the presidency. President Washington will go down as one of the most famous people in the country, as well as in history's timeline itself.
