This is a big hit in the U.K. when it was released in 1977, it is in fact a cover of a classical piece written by American composer Aaron Copland in 1942 for The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, but this version by the British band is the most well known, and is one of their biggest hits, this version was cut short but only by about 30 seconds or so, it has a lead out of drums and keyboard.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake are no longer here, Carl Palmer is still slaying the drums at the age of 74, playing with the energy of a man 50 years younger.
Aussies who grew up in 80s know this well, was used on Chris Conroys World of Boats on sat mornings before cartoons came on around 7 am, or after at 9 30? Never forgotten, classic banger riff...🔥👍
This is one of mi Fave tracks by them. I never did get a chance to see them Live but I did catch Palmer with a couple o young guys doing ELP stuff and it was amazing.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of Keith Emerson of the Nice, Greg Lake of King Crimson, and Carl Palmer of Atomic Rooster. They had a musical sound including adaptations of classical music with jazz and symphonic rock elements. Fanfare for the Common Man is a musical work by the American composer Aaron Copland. It was written in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra .Cheers and all the best from England.
In Australia, the tune was used as the introduction music to the sporting coverage on channel 7. From memory, Wild World Of Sports on channel 9 has a different tune. The music shows in Australia often played the ''Fanfare'' music video that you're watching. I remember as a kid being fascinated by the band's musicianship, but also growing bored with the whole thing due to over exposure.
I've watched and heard this piece probably a hundred times over the decades. That intro, while it sounded like horns, is actually Keith Emerson playing that on his Yamaha synthesizer.
This used to be channel 7's intro to the footy in Australia when I was kid in the 80's. The conditioned response was so strong it still gives me goosebumps now
Always loved this one! Although, because so many of my friends here in Australia, heard it every weekend on a boating show, I'm not allowed to play it. 😅 I guess if I spent so much time in front of the telly, I would have been sick of it too, but I was too busy having my own fun in the sun. 😁🌅💕
Behind the keyboardist you'll see that rig with all the patch cables going in and out of it. At the time, it was known as "the world's most famous synthesizer." It even had a name; Keith called it "The Beast." And it wasn't just for show, it was the actual guts of the synth, with Keith making changes in the wiring during the show, according to the song being played.
I don't believe that Emerson Lake and Palmer made it specifically for the Olympics they were very much into doing adaptations and interpretations of classical pieces including Holtz, Bartok, Mussorgsky, Ginistera and the author of this piece Aaron Copland. ELP also did a great cover of Copland's HOEDOWN from his musical RODEO
Aaron Copland’s anthemic “Fanfare for the Common Man” gets the prog-rock treatment in a version that probably earned the renowned composer more than anything else in his entire career. Buoyed by a propulsive groove from Lake and Palmer, Emerson uses his ultra-expensive, state-of-the-art Yamaha GX-1 synth to reproduce the orchestral colors of Copland’s piece before embarking on an extended solo. The track achieves an undeniable majesty and momentum. It ended up giving the band their biggest hit ever, and has since been the soundtrack to innumerable TV sporting events. - Ultimate Classic Rock Composer Aaron Copland: "Well, of course it's very flattering to have one's music adopted by so popular a group, and so good a group as Emerson, Lake & Palmer ... in each case, where I have given my permission (the other was for ELP's adaptation of "Hoedown"), there was something that attracted me about the version that they perform, which made me think I'd like to allow them to release it ... what they do is really around the piece, you might say, rather than a literal transposition of the piece, and they're a gifted group."
Finally I found a comment that mentions that this is a 'cover'. Quite a different take, however, from the brassy orchestral original (worth checking out).
Carl Palmer went on to play drums for Asia. For a short period, John Wetton left, and Greg Lake played bass and sing, but John Wetton returned. If you are not familiar with Asia, the had a hit with Heat If The Moment and their song Sole Survivor won a Grammy. But the whole first album was fire! Greg Lake passed away, I think heart issues from memory ( but I could be wrong) then Keith Emmerson took his own life.
Got to see ELP one time, indoors, at a Symphony Hall. Great acoustics, but they blew out the power three times during the show, and picked up exactly where they were cut off each time, true professionals. Actually got to see a couple of games of Les Expos at the Olympic Stadium in 1980, a few years after this event, and it was a lot of fun. Youpie, their mascot, was having a "birthday' celebration, they gave him an ATV and he? was ripping around the Stadium on it. Woohoo. ELP were a true Supergroup of very talented musicians, and they proved it every time out.
Keith Emerson was in a progressive band "The Nice" and they were famous for their rendition of "America" from "West Side Story" and after performing it burned the American flag!
